The 2015 Honda Pilot is not the best crossover in this segment anymore, but it’s still a top-quality vehicle. It offers excellent performance, a comfortable cabin and quite a few high-tech features. Its downfall is an undeniable sense of cheapness inside its cabin that is not found in most of its competitors.

The 2015 Honda Pilot is an all-around excellent crossover that gets so many things right that it’s hard not to shed a tear. It offers a superb performance, excellent interior comfort and plenty of features. As such, it’s really no surprise that the Pilot has been one of Honda’s best-sellers since the 1990s. The only problem with the newest model is its cheaply finished interior – because there are plenty of vehicles that offer more in this segment.

On the outside, the 2015 Pilot serves up a fairly long wheelbase and short overhangs. However, the main appeal of this crossover is that it was clearly build for function, which is easily apparent in its upright and boxy shape. What makes this design work is the fact that it has this feeling of timelessness, so don’t expect it to go out of fashion any time soon. The details that you’ll find on the exterior include turn signals integrated into the halogen headlights, 17-inch steel wheels on the LX trim, five-spoke, 18-inch alloy wheels on the EX and EX-L trim levels as well as six-spoke alloy wheels on the Touring models. To access the cargo area, it is possible flip up the rear glass.

On the inside, however, the Pilot is extremely restrained, both in terms of design and material quality. The controls are in their logical places and, on top of that, they are incredibly user-friendly. You won’t find anything that’s impressive-looking here though, which means that you should expect the most basic design possible – though it does work well. It’s also not exactly bland, and if you go for the EX-L trim, you’ll find that it’s luxuriously plush. This crossover features three rows of seats, all of which provide a lot of legroom, which is impressive, given that it’s only a midsize crossover. The cargo area the rearmost seat is as big as that of a large sedan, featuring a big storage bin below the rear floor as well as enough roof space for a carrier rack, should you need one.

Under the hood, the 2015 Pilot has a 3.5-litre V6 engine that can produce 250 horsepower and 253 pound-feet of torque. It’s a surprisingly well-performing and easy-to-drive vehicle. The engine is paired with a five-speed automatic transmission, which includes Grade Logic Control for ascending or descending with the most optimal gear necessary. There’s also something called Variable Cylinder Management, which allows the engine to operate in six-cylinder mode for maximum power. Not satisfied? There are four-cylinder and three-cylinder modes for enhanced efficiency as well. The rear-wheel-drive version of the Pilot provides the best fuel-economy ratings out of any eight-passenger vehicle available, while the four-wheel-drive Pilot has the best rating as far as four-wheel-drive SUVs are concerned.

So, is the 2015 Honda Pilot worth its $35,000 price tag? Well, we would argue that for the most part it is. Sure, its cabin is a bit cheap, but the rest of this vehicle is so good that the cheapness is hardly even noticeable. In other words, if you need a reliable crossover for your family or for some other reason, then give this vehicle a try.

Power and Performance:

Front- and all-wheel drive are both offered with the 2015 Honda Pilot's only drivetrain: a 250-horsepower, 3.5-liter V-6 with a five-speed automatic transmission.

The Pilot does have quite a bit more durability built in than the typical car, though, and it is a good choice for those looking to get to a trailhead on the weekends. The four-wheel-drive system (actually all-wheel drive) does include a Lock mode for mud or deep snow. Structurally, the Pilot's structure borrows some of the benefits of a body-on-frame SUV but has a modern unibody design. And that contributes to its good ride quality and crisp response.

Interiors and Special Features:

The 2015 Honda Pilot's interior is a study in efficiency. All controls are logically placed and easy to operate. There's nothing eye-popping, just basic good design that works well. Still, the interior is not bare or bland, and in the EX-L trim level it is luxuriously plush. Each of the three rows of seats provides more-than-adequate legroom, welcome in the midsize category. Cargo capacity behind the rear seat is roughly equivalent to the trunk of a large sedan, there's a generous storage bin below the rear floor and plenty of roof space for a carrier rack.

Every 2015 Honda Pilot comes standard with antilock brakes, traction and stability control, front side airbags, full-length side curtain airbags and front seat active head restraints. A rearview camera is also standard, while parking sensors are included with the Touring. There are no advanced accident-prevention technologies available, nor any kind of emergency telematics.
