Quick Look

The 2015 GMC Yukon XL is a completely redesigned vehicle this year. This translates into a more stylish exterior, better powertrain selection, more equipment and superior fuel economy numbers. But the highlight of this Yukon is the addition of an integrated fold-flat third-row seat, which means that it no longer has to be removed to create more cargo space, particularly this model – since it’s much longer.

Full Review

The 2015 GMC Yukon XL is a completely new vehicle this year, carrying a more powerful engine, better tech features and more stylish looks. The general appeal of the Yukon is the fact that it’s big, which comes with the territory, especially given that that it’s a full-size SUV. This is where our favourite change comes in – the new Yukon’s third-row seat folds into the floor instead of needing to be removed. Since this is the XL we’re talking about, you get so much interior space, it’s mind-boggling – it’s a monster of a car.

On the outside, the new Yukon is intended to carry better aerodynamics and more aggressive looks. We especially like the rough, almost brutish design of the front end. And if you get one of the Denali models, you’ll notice that it has the same sheet metal as the non-Denali Yukons, but you’ll also enjoy a chrome mesh grille instead of the three-element one on the other models. The purpose of the new design is to add depth, which is supposed to translate into “toughness.” It’s a lot of chrome, so if you don’t like that, you might not like the look.

On the inside, the Yukon XL is a far cry from the previous model – as in, it’s much, much better. In fact, the interior of the Yukon even surpasses that of its Ford, Nissan and Toyota competitors. You get high-quality materials along with logically-organized buttons and switches as well as comfortable front seats – particularly the driver’s seat. If you place yourself in the second row, you’ll find that the space is just as roomy and comfortable. You can place either a bench or a pair of captain’s chairs there, depending on your preferences. The third row is also impressively spacious in the XL, thanks to extra legroom you won’t find in the regular Yukon. The best part of all this is that you can now fold the third row flat to maximize cargo room – and with the XL variant, there’s plenty of it!

Under the hood, the XL model can have one of two possible V8 configurations. The standard 5.3-litre variant can produce 355 horsepower and 383 pound-feet of torque, while being connected to a six-speed automatic transmission. Though it may sound familiar, this is not the same engine as in the predecessor since it has Active Cylinder Management, which can turnoff half the cylinders when travelling at a steady speed. It also offers direct injection, which exists primarily for the purpose of improving fuel economy, while increasing horsepower and torque. The Denali version of the Yukon serves up a 6.2-litre V8 engine that produces 420 horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque. It also has direct injection and Active Cylinder Management. On top of all this, all the Yukons get to benefit from four-wheel drive with an off-road-ready low range.

Overall, the 2015 GMC Yukon is definitely better than its predecessor. Its new look may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but its redesigned interior and upgraded powertrains are both phenomenal improvements. So, if you have $50,000 to spend on a new full-size SUV, this is definitely worth it.

Power and Performance:

Full-size SUVs require strong engines, not just for acceleration and passing, but for towing and hauling--people actually use these expensive people-movers for real work (and real, hard play). Fortunately, the 2015 GMC Yukon has a pair of engines that are up to the task.

The standard Yukon and Yukon XL get GM's new 5.3-liter V-8, rated at 355 horsepower and 383 pound-feet of torque. Yukon Denali models get an upgrade to the 6.2-liter V-8 and its 420-horsepower and 460-pound-foot ratings. All versions of the Yukon can choose from rear-wheel-drive or four-wheel-drive systems.

Interiors and Special Features:

This is where the GMC Yukon is head and shoulders above its predecessor, and where it sets itself apart from Ford, Nissan and Toyota competitors. The materials are first rate, the switchgear is logically arranged and feels high-class, and the driver's seat is exceptionally comfortable. The same is true for the second row, which can come with either a bench or a pair of captain's chairs. The third row is best for kids in a standard Yukon, but the XL manages grownups thanks to extra legroom. The new fold-flat third row makes it easier to maximize cargo room.

Safety features:

Standard safety equipment on the 2015 GMC Yukon includes antilock disc brakes, traction control, stability control, front-seat side airbags and full-length side curtain airbags. An airbag located between the front bucket seats (when so equipped) aids in side-impact crashes. Also standard is OnStar, which includes automatic crash notification, on-demand roadside assistance, remote door unlocking, stolen vehicle assistance and turn-by-turn navigation. Front and rear parking sensors and a rearview camera are standard on every Yukon.
