Full Review

The 2015 GMC Sierra 1500 is the smallest truck in the Sierra lineup, but it can still fit the bill for those of you who are looking for a partner to help with heavy-lifting jobs. This vehicle has been a member of the GMC lineup since its debut in 1998. It has since undergone a few overhauls to bring it into the third generation, the most recent of which was in 2014. Coming off such a fresh upgrade, the 2015 model is released with only a few changes, including a new OnStar system with 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot and Magnetic Ride Control system for the upscale Sierra Denali. The Sierra 1500 is available with lots to choose from when it comes to cabin size and engine type, but the most important choice will likely be the trim level. There are four trims to choose from: Sierra, SLE, SLT and Denali. Each of these offers different features, but one thing is true – this truck is up for any task.

The exterior design of the Sierra 1500 falls within the realm of most pickups at this point. The Sierra looks very similar to many of its predecessors, but has a more modern flair and muscular presence that carries over for the 2015 year. The front end has a blunt and squared-off treatment, and the fenders are chunkier than in the past. Many of the distinct features on the Sierra 1500 are available, depending on the chosen trim level or options. The exterior LED lights and projector headlamps are features that set this vehicle apart from its Chevrolet sibling. The base Sierra, as its name suggests, comes with very basic features, including 17-inch steel wheels as well as chrome bumpers and grille.

The interior of the Sierra 1500 boasts a “you-got-what-you-paid-for” look, it doesn’t try to be too upscale, but it also doesn’t appear cheap. The features range from pretty basic to quite luxurious, depending on the trim level the buyer opts for. In any case, courtesy of the recent overhaul, the Sierra now has better quality material in the cab as well as a better build quality. There are more places for storage with the addition of different bins and cubbies to make the pickup more functional. The design is very simple and the controls and displays are intelligently placed and very straightforward to use. Depending on what cabin size the buyer opts for will determine how much additional space that the cabin has. But, all of the Sierras are a relatively comfortable place to drive home in after a hard day of work.

The available technology features on the Sierra 1500 can range from simplistic to sophisticated. The base model has a four-speaker AM/FM sound system with a four-inch colour display and USB/auxiliary inputs. You can also equip the Sierra 1500 with some great technology features, such as the IntelliLink Infotainment system, which is responsible for powering all of the information and entertainment features, displaying them on an eight-inch reconfigurable touchscreen. The graphics are crisp and clean, and the system is relatively user-friendly. Another great addition for the 2015 model is the 4G LTE connectivity, which turns that cabin into a WiFi hotspot for up to seven devices.

There are three different drivetrain options available for the 2015 Sierra 1500 that are based on the trim level. All Sierras, except for the SLT, are equipped with a 4.3-litre V6 engine that can produce 285 horsepower and 305 pound-feet of torque. Standard on the SLT and optional on the other Sierras is a 5.3-litre V8 engine that produces 355 horsepower and 383 pound-feet of torque. Optional on the SLT is a 6.2-litre V8 engine. All the engines are paired with a six-speed automatic transmission and either rear- or four-wheel drive.

Overall, the 2015 GMC Sierra 1500 is a great option for a buyer in the market looking to buy themselves a reliable and capable work truck. This vehicle can be configured in many different ways, which allows for customization and makes it appealing to a range of different buyers.

Power and Performance:

The Sierra's base engine is a 4.3-liter V-6, but it shouldn't be confused with previous GM truck engines of the same displacement. This one is a credible option for a light-duty truck that will only occasionally tow more than a few thousand pounds. It's quiet, responsive, and relatively smooth for a V-6—it even sounds pretty good, although it doesn't quite match the burble of a V-8. The latest 4.3-liter produces 285 horsepower and 305 lb-ft of torque, which which should make it good for a 0–60-mph time of 8.0 to 8.5 seconds. It's efficient--direct fuel injection and cylinder deactivation are included--returning up to 24 mpg on the highway. The V-6 Sierra is rated to tow up to 7,600 pounds.

Interiors and Special Features:

Inside, the dash is very upright, with a simple but bold design, and the bottom edges of the windows are several inches lower than the dash top. Controls are arranged in several key areas, just to the left of the steering wheel or in a large center-stack area (with a wide center console just aft), and all the controls and displays are large and straightforward, with cool blue primary lighting, red arms on the dials, and red backlighting. GMC's IntelliLink infotainment system makes a colorful splash on the big LCD screen found on most models, and the rich-hued trims in the cabin are soft-touch in many places, unlike the Chevy.

Safety features:

Although now in its second year, not all test results are yet available for the latest GMC Sierra. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has given Sierra Crew Cabs five stars overall, with five-star ratings for frontal and side impacts and a four-star rollover resistance rating. So far the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has only put the Sierra through its moderate overlap frontal test--to a 'good' result.
