Quick Look

GMC will re-enters the midsize pickup truck segment with the launch of an all-new Canyon this year. It took a two-year hiatus, but it’s back for 2015, and better than ever.

Full Review

GMC has officially filled the void in the midsize pickup segment by launching the completely updated Canyon, which is the twin of the Chevrolet Colorado – although it does distinguish itself a little. The Canyon was first introduced in 2004 and remained popular for eight years until the last model year in 2012. The 2015 Canyon offers its buyers unique specifications for those that don’t quite require a full-size truck, but are looking for something larger than a compact. The Canyon is available with either a five- or six-foot bed and in three different trims, including the Base, SLE and SLT. This pickup hopes to bring drivers that have merged over to crossovers back to the open-bed pickup side through its appealing size and unique capabilities.

The GMC Canyon doesn’t look anything out of the ordinary for a pickup truck. It’s cut from the same cloth that most pickups are nowadays, following a consistent design scheme that has proven itself over many years – such as a rugged and edgy stance. But the Canyon manages to keep the GMC familiarity thanks to recognizable front and tail ends. The flared-and-squared wheel arches are also a familiar detail, which GMC buyers have been known to appreciate. The mid-size pickup is pretty well equipped, even in the base model that includes standard features such as 16-inch aluminum wheels and a chrome rear bumper with a step. Moving up in trim will also move you up in standard gear, but as far as aesthetics go, the Canyon is a good-looking truck.

Inside the Canyon is a cabin that is both a more comfortable and quality place to sit and drive in. The overall look and feel is upscale, but still embodies the ruggedness that makes it a pickup. The central dash pod holds the primary display unit and different controls can also be found on the prominent steering wheel. The Canyon’s interior has sedan-like features that can be found in the bucket seats and door armrests. This pickup has quite a few “classy” features too, making it a more business-oriented truck, with hints of aluminum trim and soft-touch materials that can be found on the higher-end trims. The front of the cabin is equipped with spacious and comfortable seats. The back of the extended cab configuration is not too spacious, but that’s not abnormal for the segment, and the crew cab offers more space for those in need.

As far as technology features go, the Canyon is actually quite sophisticated. This pickup can be equipped with a lot of upscale technology, conforming to the idea that pickup trucks are no longer simply for work, but also need to be built for pleasure. The Canyon offers USB inputs; Siri Eyes Free More for iPhone users; GMC’s app shop and OnStar 4G LTE with built-in WiFi hotspots. There is also a “Teen Driver” feature and navigation system. All of these features are displayed on an eight-inch colour touchscreen.

Under the hood of the GMC Canyon is one of two engines – a 2.5-litre four-cylinder or 3.6-litre V6, which is more appropriate for truck-necessity duties. The 2.5-litre option generates 200 horsepower and 191 pound-feet of torque and can be equipped with a six-speed manual or automatic transmission. The V6 engine produces 305 horsepower and 269 pound feet of torque.

Overall, the all-new 2015 GMC Canyon is a great option for those looking for crossover-like vehicle with an open flat bed. GMC has made many upgrades for this re-launch, which add up to make it a very attractive option in the midsize segment.

Interiors and Special Features:

The new Canyon's cabin should be a vastly nicer place to sit and drive. Materials quality appears as good as anything in the Chevrolet Cruze compact sedan, for example. The Canyon also offers 4G LTE cellular connectivity, making the truck a Wi-Fi hotspot, while the latest GMC IntelliLink infotainment system enables gesture recognition and "natural" voice recognition. A rearview camera comes standard, while optional safety features include forward-collision alert, lane departure warning and adaptive cruise control.
