Quick Look

The 2015 Ford F-150 is a decent pickup truck that has been redesigned for this year to offer a new look and lightweight body. The F-150 has never been the kind of vehicle to make giant leaps forward, but with its new aluminum panels, the 2015 model is most definitely gamble – in a good way. On the other hand, the truck still offers a spacious cabin, solid performance and plenty of interior gadgets – for a relatively low price too.

Full Review

The 2015 Ford F-150 is a completely redesigned vehicle this year, offering a lightweight body for better performance and fuel efficiency. Generally speaking, however, Ford hasn’t really done much to change this pickup truck over the years. The new model is a bit wider than the 2014 one, while its doors are slimmer, which adds a tiny bit of extra interior space. However, many of the exterior features, like the hefty grille and hood creases, are the same as before. The truck also includes plenty of new interior gadgets, making the whole thing a very appealing package in general – especially for its relatively low price.

On the outside, the 2015 F-150 is tough truck through-and-through, with its boxy shape and in-your-face features. And thanks to the aluminum panels used in its construction, the pickup must have been inexpensive to produce, while being much more wind-resistant and lighter in weight than its predecessors. The grille is tall and bulky, while the headlights are smaller and more restrained, featuring rectangular insets that remind us of the older F-Series pickups. The higher trims also have LEDs in them, which we hope will become standard across all trims in the near future. The hood features creases for better aerodynamics, which are further improved by the flush-mounted windshield and roof. You can even get a flush sliding glass window at the rear of the cab. The tailgate also functions as a spoiler, while being faired for better airflow. But, the best part of the vehicle is its 5.5-foot bed, offered with a box-side step – plenty of space for work-related equipment and materials.

The cabin of the 2015 F-150 offers better-quality materials and new technologies like SYNC, MyFord Touch and an eight-inch LCD screen in the instrument cluster. Other features include 400-watt and 110-volt outlets, second-row inflatable safety belts, adaptive cruise control, panoramic moonroof, accent lighting and a 360-degree view camera system for easy parking maneuvers.

You will also notice that the new steering wheel has quite a few redundant controls, which make operating the navigation and centre cluster screen a very easy experience. The dashboard features four large air vents, while the centre stack is wide enough to allow for plenty of buttons and controls. Within the centre console is a driver-oriented gear selector and a set of cup holders for the front passenger. Legroom is still plentiful across all seating row – of which there are two. The back seat also comes with a flat load floor and foldable seat bottoms.

Under the hood, the Ford F-150 can have one out of four engines. The standard offering is a 3.5-litre V6 that can produce 283 horsepower and 255 pound-feet of torque, with a towing capacity of 7,600 pounds. The new turbocharged 2.7-litre EcoBoost V6 slots can yield 325 horsepower and 375 pound-feet of torque, with a towing capacity of 8,500 pounds. It comes with an automatic stop-start feature designed for improved fuel efficiency. The rear-wheel-drive F-150 model offers a 2.7-litre V6 engine that can generate 325 horsepower and 375 pound-feet of torque, being able to haul up to 2,250 pounds. The most powerful engine on the roster is a 5.0-litre V8, which can give you 360 horsepower and 380 pound-feet of torque. All four engines are connected to a six-speed automatic transmission, with no alternatives offered (sadly).

Overall, the 2015 Ford F-150 is a delightful truck that does as much as possible for a vehicle in this price range. It’s not the best truck in the world, but it’s definitely a competitive option, easily matching the likes of the Toyota Tundra, Ram 1500 and Chevrolet Silverado 1500.

Power and Performance:

The standard engine in the new F-150 is a 3.5-liter V6 (downsized from 3.7 liters in the current model) rated at 283 horsepower and 255 pound-feet of torque, with a towing capacity of 7,600 pounds. A new turbocharged 2.7-liter EcoBoost V6 slots in above with 325 hp and 375 lb-ft of torque, and can tow up to 8,500 pounds. This new engine is equipped with an automatic stop-start feature that aims to improve fuel efficiency. A rear-wheel-drive F-150 equipped with the 2.7-liter V6 can haul up to a 2,250-pound payload (Four-wheel-drive models are rated with slightly less payload and towing capacities).

The 5.0-liter V8 carries over, likely with last year's rated output of 360 hp and 380 lb-ft of torque. This engine should be cheaper than the new 2.7-liter and should tow more, but it's also likely to burn more fuel. Ford will also offer a second 3.5-liter V6, this one a turbocharged EcoBoost version for increased towing capacity and the promise of impressive fuel economy. Ford has not yet released specs for either engine.

The same sturdy six-speed automatic is expected to be the only available transmission.

Interiors and Special Features:

Ford is still keeping details on the interior a secret, but we know it will offer better-quality materials, and new technologies like SYNC, MyFord Touch and an 8-inch "productivity screen" in the instrument cluster. But Ford did let us in on some new additions for 2015, including:

  • 400-watt and 110-volt outlets inside the cabin
  • Eight-inch LCD productivity screen that shows that displays important items, like towing and fuel economy tips
  • Second-row inflatable safety belts
  • Adaptive cruise control

Safety features:

With its completely new body structure, the Ford F-150 has absolutely no crash-test ratings yet to back up its aerospace-styled construction and its laundry list of advanced safety technology. Both of those things could make it the first pickup to earn the Top Safety Pick+ award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS)--but as of yet, neither the IIHS nor the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) have put one through their testing regimens.

For reference, the prior F-150 earned four stars from the NHTSA, and a Top Safety Pick award from the IIHS.
