Quick Look

At a glance, the 2015 FIAT 500L is just like a regular 500, but one close look will easily change anyone’s perspective. Despite its compact visual cues, this tall wagon is actually quite large, featuring four doors and a proper back seat. The 500L’s main problem is the 1.4-litre MultiAir Turbo four-cylinder engine, which performs fine in the regular 500s, but struggles in this one.

Full Review

Though the 2015 FIAT 500L may share a look and most of its name with regular 500 hatchbacks and convertibles, it’s substantially different from its two-door siblings. First of all, the 500L is a four-door tall wagon as opposed to two-door a hatchback, which makes it significantly larger than the regular 500. So, while it may look like a compact vehicle, it can safely be described as large when you look at its fuel economy numbers. The 500L is here to take on the MINI Countryman, Honda Fit and Kia Soul, which it pulls off admirably.

On the outside, the new FIAT 500L has a very specific look – like many other urban vehicles. However, unlike the 500, it’s not instantly lovable, because for all intents and purposes, it’s slightly “odd.” It's taller and far more quirky than the 500, but once you let it into your heart, you will love it – even if it borrows far too many cues from the Countryman. The most noticeable and “Countryman-like” feature is the 500L`s bulldog nose with its tiered headlamps and three different horizontal grille lines, similar to those on the Pontiac Aztek. All of this is backed by a helmet-like roofline that`s somehow reminiscent of the MINI as well.

In terms of length, the 500L is 27.7 inches longer and 6 inches wider than the 500. This allows for plenty more interior space for back and front passenger, though you will likely fit in only four adults.

Speaking of the interior – the cabin is not nearly is wacky as you`d expect it to be, judging from the exterior. You`ll spot several oval nacelles for the controls in contrasting colour as well as sizeable climate-control knobs, which overshadow the small infotainment screen. While most 500L models look almost identical on the inside, the Trekking trim happens to have its own black-and-brown colour scheme – to complement its unique front and rear fascias, flared wheel openings, body-side sill moldings and 17-inch alloy wheels on the outside. FIAT calls it the more “adventurous” model, but it differs from the rest of the pack sin terms of aesthetics only.

Under the hood, the 500L has a 1.4-litre MultiAir Turbo four-cylinder engine that produces 160 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque. It's the same engine as in the 500, so which that it`s a bit slower on this heavier model. All models are front-wheel-drive only, including the Trekking trim. Like before, the engine can be connected either to a six-speed dual-clutch or six-speed manual transmission. For this year, FIAT has also added a six-speed automatic transmission for those who wanted that option (because they probably hated the dual-clutch version).

Generally speaking, the 2015 FIAT 500L is just as good as the regular 500 – only bigger and a bit slower. If you live at the heart of a large city and you dig the look of this wagon, then definitely give it a look.

Power and Performance:

Powering all 500L models is a 1.4-liter MultiAir Turbo four-cylinder rated at 160 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque. It's the same engine found in the 500, so it's a little more taxed in this heavier model. Despite what the Trekking model might have you think, power is sent to the front wheels only; a six-speed dry dual-clutch transmission and a six-speed manual transmission remain available, while for 2015 Fiat has added a third transmission option, a six-speed conventional auto. Its appearance is likely meant to address negative feedback for the other two, especially the dual-clutch.

Interiors and Special Features:

The cockpit doesn't take as many risks or look quite as mashed up. A few simple oval-ish nacelles hold the controls, in contrasting color, with big climate-control knobs faring better than the smallish infotainment screen in the real-estate grab. Most 500L models have a similar interior, but the Trekking trim has its own black-and-brown color scheme to go with unique front and rear fascias, flared wheel openings, body-side sill moldings, and 17-inch alloy wheels. It's billed as the adventurous model, although its differences are aesthetic only.

Safety features:

The 2015 FIAT 500 comes with standard stability control, 4-wheel anti-lock disc brakes and seven airbags (front, front-side, driver-knee and full-length side-curtain).

In government crash-testing, the 500 received four overall stars out of five, a rating that consists of four stars in frontal and rollover tests and five stars in the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's side-impact assessment. In crash tests by the nonprofit Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, the 500 earned Good ratings in four of the agency's five tests and a Poor rating in the final test. That last test, the small-overlap assessment, has caused trouble for many of today's smaller cars.
