Full Review

The 2015 FIAT 500 is a subcompact car that is built for practicality and city driving, but it also manages to add its own unique flare through interesting design cues. Add great fuel economy to this vehicle and you have yourself a pretty useful little whip. FIAT first introduced the 500 to the North American market in 2007,  bringing competition to cars such as the Volkswagen Beetle and BMW’s MINI Cooper. This vehicle got a few upgrades for the 2015 release, including a six-speed automatic transmission and some new technology features. As far as unique, fun-to-drive city cars go, the FIAT 500 is worth a look.

The FIAT 500 has a very charming look that is unique to the segment and to North America in general. This subcompact hatchback is defined by its lively upright styling that manages to look ample, but not overly bulky. The modern design includes distinctive cues such as the button-like headlamps, upward-sloping sides, forward-sloping rear glass and mustache bar in the front. There is no confusing what kind of car you’re looking at. In order to get the really cool upgrades, you might look to an upper-level trim, but for this price and with this equipment, any FIAT 500 option will do the job.

Inside the FIAT 500 there are a few upgrades added for 2015 that have increased the look and functionality of this car. General speaking, the cabin is built with inexpensive materials that actually look more upscale than they are. Similar to the MINI Cooper, the FIAT 500 definitely embraces a quirky and over-stylized look. However, the layouts of the controls are functional and definitely make more logical sense than in some of the competitors.

For a subcompact, the front of the vehicle is very roomy – more so than you might expect. The back, however, is just as tiny as it looks and is best reserved for children or small cargo. As for larger cargo, the trunk fits 9.5 cubic feet with the seats up and 30.2 cubic-feet with them down, although they do not fold flat.

One of the bets aspects in the FIAT 500 is the ability to personalize this vehicle. Whether you’re choosing if it’s going to be a hatchback or convertible, picking one out of five different trim levels or mining the wide array of optional features, the FIAT 500 can be configured in countless different ways. As for technology features, the 500 is not renowned for having a plethora of them. However, this year, FIAT does add Bluetooth audio streaming and hands-free calling, as well as an additional USB port.

As for the powertrain, the front-wheel -drive FIAT 500 is available in several different configurations, depending on the trim. The base 500 is motivated by a 1.4-litre four-cylinder engine that gets 101 horsepower and 98 pound-feet of torque. The 500 Turbo gets the 1.4-litre turbocharged inline-four that generates 135 horsepower and 150 pound-feet of torque. The top-of-the-line Abarth is powered by a 1.4-litre turbocharged inline-four that produces 160 horsepower and 170 pound-feet or torque. Also available is the 500e, which is the electric variant of this vehicle. It gets 111 horsepower and 147 pound-feet of torque and comes paired with a single-speed automatic transmission. All of the other engines can be paired with a five-speed manual or new six-speed automatic transmission.

Overall, the FIAT 500 is a welcome addition to the North American subcompact car segment, and it has made that known for the last seven years. For a vehicle that is fun to drive and easy to personalize, check out the FIAT 500.

Power and Performance:

The front-wheel-drive 2015 Fiat 500 is motivated by a small but sophisticated 1.4-liter 4-cylinder engine using Fiat's patented MultiAir technology, which varies intake-valve timing and lift. Fiat tunes this engine to three power levels: The base hatchback and cabriolet get 101 horsepower (naturally aspirated), the Turbo makes 135 horsepower and the Abarth, also turbocharged, crank out 160 horsepower. The 500e electric is rated for 111 horsepower and 147 lb-ft of torque. All of the 500s now offer the choice of a 5-speed manual or 6-speed automatic transmission. We like the automatic for its extra ratio and responsive shifting though it does cut fuel efficiency by more than 10 percent. The 500e uses a single-speed automatic.

Interiors and Special Features:

The 2015 Fiat 500 subcompact is roomier up front than you might expect, and just as tight in back as it looks. The interior style lives up to the promise of the quirky but fashionable exterior, and we found the materials, build quality and seat comfort impressive for a car with a starting price around $17,000. As the athlete of the group, the Fiat 500 Abarth offers aggressively bolstered front seats, exclusive red stitching and a thick-rimmed, flat-bottom steering wheel.
