Quick Look

The 2015 Dodge SRT Viper delivers slick looks and plenty of speed thanks to its superb V10 engine. It can pump out 645 horsepower and 600 pound-feet of torque, but unfortunately it does so at the expense of fuel economy, carrying a combined rating of 18.8 litres per 100 kilometres.

Full Review

For as long we could remember, the Dodge Viper has been a mean, tough-to-control sports car that couldn’t quite match up to the superior 911 and Corvette. It’s not that it was bad vehicle per se, but it’s never been particularly mind-blowing either. The 2015 model is actually a little better in that respect, delivering a modified V10 engine that offers balanced performance, but not at the cost of speed. Just like the previous models, the new Viper looks devilishly good.

The 2015 Viper has appropriately ditched the SRT badge in favour of a Dodge logo. The exterior design hasn’t changed much for this year, gaining basically only new colours and special-edition packages. The lower-end GT and GTS models look almost exactly the same as their predecessors, but you will spot a few modifications on the Viper TA 2.0, which is essentially a successor to last year’s Time Attack. This track-prepped model comes with a new aerodynamic package that contains front dive panels, carbon-fiber front corner splitters and a revamped rear wing. The Yorange exterior finish is also new, which now accompanies the Competition Blue and Venom Black finishes.

The GTS model comes with a Ceramic Blue Edition Package that adds Ceramic Blue paint colour with black stripes and five-spoke Rattler wheels – in Black Vapor Chrome. Features like orange black calipers, a sating-black exhaust bezel, rear applique and carbon-fiber brake duets are all here as well.

Finally, you can also get Stryker Purple for your GT or GTS model, which is a new colour addition this year. Stripe colour packages now offer Adrenaline Red as well. Despite the minor changes, the Viper is as sexy as ever, but you probably already knew that since looks are one of its specialties.

What isn’t one of the Viper’s specialties is interior comfort. The cabin is the same in this model as before, which amounts to a very driver-centric space that’s absolutely boring (and useless) for anyone who is not driving. So, if you want to be a passenger, then get ready to feel left out.

The new GT trim offers standard Alcantara and Nappa leather seats finished in black, Demonic Red or Sepia, with accent stitching as a nice cherry on top. The TA 2.0 trim comes back with the same black interior as before – with orange stitching on its racing seats, centre stack, console, gear shifter, steering wheel and door panels. If you manage to get the Viper GTS Ceramic Blue Package, your cabin will be covered in Alcantara and Nappa leather almost everywhere, with the remaining areas featuring silver trims and carbon-fiber inserts.

Under the hood is where the 2015 Viper truly shines, offering the same naturally aspirated, 8.4-liter V-10, but with five extra horses, which amounts to 645 horsepower and 600 pound-feet of torque. It takes the vehicle 3.3 seconds to accelerate to 97 km/h, which is fast, though this does come at a price in fuel. It efficiency ratings are abysmal at 18.8 litres per 100 kilometres combined. Our favourite aspect of this particular model is that it doesn’t feel as sluggish when performing at high speeds as its predecessors. The Viper has been named one of the most dangerous sport vehicle for a reason, and the 2015 model does rectify that somewhat.

Overall, the 2015 Dodge SRT Viper is, for the most part, exactly what you’d expect from a vehicle like this. It’s fast, dangerous and good-looking. Its cabin could use some work, but the main point of owning a Viper is spirited driving, which is exactly what you get here.

Power and Performance:

There's only one powertrain configuration available in the Viper: a chunky six-speed manual transmission paired to an 8.4-liter V-10 engine. For 2015, the Viper engine gets a small (5-hp) power bump to 645 horsepower, while torque stands pat at 600 pound-feet, the most torque of any production normally aspirated sports car engine in the world.

To get the most out of the engine, however, you'll have to rev it hard--there's surprisingly little low-end punch to the meaty V-10. Fortunately, that makes the Viper a touch more tractable around town, where you might not want an instantaneous 600 pound-feet of torque surging through the wheels as you navigate a roundabout.

Interiors and Special Features:

The interior remains unchanged on the base model, but the new GT trim is comes equipped with with standard Alcantara and Nappa leather seats finished in either black, Demonic Red or Sepia, with accent stitching. Unlike the GT, the TA 2.0 carries over with the same black interior with orange stitching on the racing seats, center stack, console, gear shifter, steering wheel and door panels.

The limited-edition Viper GTS Ceramic Blue Package, on the other hand, comes with a unique interior. Nearly every surface is covered in Alcantara and Nappa leather, while the remaining areas feature silver trims and carbon-fiber inserts. As with most limited-edition Vipers, the GTS Ceramic Blue is delivered with a carbon serialized badge on the dashboard.

Safety features:

The 2015 Dodge Viper hasn't been crash-tested by either of the nationally recognized safety agencies. Both the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) tend to skip low-volume expensive cars such as the Viper, so it doesn't necessarily mean the car is unsafe.

The Viper's massive power output and delicate limit handling have contributed to a reputation of it being a difficult car to drive, but the latest model is much friendlier than previous generations thanks to electronic stability control. Very capable brakes, especially on TA models, help slow or stop the Viper in emergencies, and it stellar handling can be a boon for evasive maneuvers. Driver and passenger multi-stage airbags are standard, but side and curtain airbags aren't available. All Vipers also come with a one-day track-driving experience, a kind of high-performance boot camp, which Dodge lists as a safety feature.
