This pickup gets a long list of improvements that will make it an even more desirable truck to spend a work day with.

Full Review

Riding on the success of the Silverado light-duty redesign, Chevrolet has turned its attention to the Silverado 2500HD. This full-size pickup truck got a complete redesign for 2015 model year. The most notable improvements affect the cabin, technology and safety. This truck marks 15 years of being the chief workhorse in the Silverado lineup, providing its owners with a reliable service and now a better-looking and feeling place to spend time in. The Silverado 2500HD is available with a list of different cabin sizes and cargo-bed lengths. There is the three-passenger Regular Cab and six-seat Double and Crew Cab formats. There are also three bed lengths: 6.6 feet, eight feet and 5.8 feet. The Silverado 2500HD is available in three different trims – the Work Truck, LT and top-line LTZ – all of which will drastically change the look and features of the vehicle. While the heavy-duty pickup truck segment has become extremely competitive, the comfort and refinement found in the Silverado 2500HD makes this truck a standout.

All heavy-duty pickup trucks tend to follow the same formula when it comes to design, as the proportions are essentially set in stone. How we see it though is that there is no point in reinventing the wheel. The pickup has been tried, tested and now proven true at being able to back up the daily requirements of a full-size owner. The redesign gives the 2500HD a boxy front-end design, chrome accents, a power-dome hood and sculpted taillights. Thoughtful details are also added, such as the rear CornerStep that makes entering and exiting the cargo-bed a breeze. While standard features vary from trim to trim, opting for the top-of-the-line LTZ trim will buy you some great features, such as 19-inch alloy wheels, fog lights, power-folding mirrors and more. Silverado 2500HD buyers can also select from a multitude of accessories that will improve the functionality of their pickup, depending on what kind of work it is being used for.

The cabins of pickup trucks have traditionally been a place where practicality is valued over any sort of comfort or luxury. This statement is becoming less and less true with the constant tweaks and upgrades that manufacturers are making. Chevrolet revamped the cabin of the Silverado 2500 HD to make it not only a functional place, but also a very comfortable and convenient one. The materials used now are high-quality and the gauge cluster is intelligently laid out for optimal function. There are even attractive design details, like the handsome accent stitching that can be found in the top-line trims. The seats are sizeable and supportive – a pretty comfortable place to rest in after a hard day’s work.

The available technology features in the Silverado 2500HD are sophisticated and welcomed by tech-savvy buyers. The Chevrolet MyLink infotainment system that is available on the Silverado allows connectivity for up to ten devices and natural language recognition, with all the features displayed on an eight-inch touchscreen. This year, an Enhanced MyLink version adds text message alerts, Siri Eyes Free and an OnStar 4G LTE connection, which turns the Silverado into a Wi-Fi hotspot. This system has been praised for being a very rewarding system that is user-friendly and easy to learn, although the slow response is grating at times.

There are a few different engine choices that are available on the Silverado 2500HD, depending on the trim level and buyer requirements. The first is a 6.0-litre V8 that generates 360 horsepower and 380 pound-feet of torque. This engine also comes with bi-fuel options that allow the truck to run on either gasoline or compressed natural gas (CNG). The CNG drops power slightly to 301 horsepower and 333 pound-feet of torque. This engine is paired with a six-speed automatic transmission. The second option is a turbocharged 6.6-litre diesel V8 that produces 397 horsepower and 765 pound-feet of torque paired with a beefier six-speed automatic. Rear-wheel drive is standard on all models, while four-wheel drive is optional.

Overall, the redesigned 2015 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD has taken a leap in the right direction by offering buyers a perfect blend of workhorse capability and everyday comfort and convenience. This pickup may compete in a very tough segment, but it is worth checking out, especially this year thanks to the redesign.
