Quick Look

The Chevrolet Silverado is the staple light-duty pickup that is highly customizable to suit the needs of everything – from household chores to semi-minor landscaping projects. Following the redesign for 2014, the 2015 Silverado 1500 is a solid vehicle to get some hard work done.

Full Review

In 2014, the Chevrolet Silverado got an overhaul that completely modified the look, efficiency, safety and technology in this light-duty pickup. The 2015 model will continue to ride out on the success of this upgrade with only minor changes, with the most notable one being the addition of an eight-speed shiftable automatic transmission for the V8 models.

The Chevrolet Silverado has been in production since 1998, and the 2014 refresh marks the third generation for this vehicle. As in the past, the Silverado 1500 is available with a list of different cabin sizes and cargo-bed lengths. There is the three-passenger Regular Cab and six- seat Double Cab and Crew Cab formats. There are also three bed lengths: 6.6-foot standard, eight-foot and a 5.8-foot short bed, each of which fit a different cab. The Silverado 1500 is available in five different trims: the Work Truck, LT, LTZ, High Country and Z71. This half-ton truck is now a closer comparison than ever to its larger siblings and is a great option for anyone looking for some help with pickup-required chores.

The Chevrolet Silverado 1500 has the look of a typical light-duty pickup. There is a very set-in-stone layout that many pickup trucks follow, making it a little difficult to really tell them apart. However, a year into the redesign, the Silverado 1500 is getting easier to tell apart from its predecessors. Improvements and tweaks are clear in the cleaned-up look with fewer items hanging down and visible from the front and rear. There are also trim specific items, depending on the chosen configuration. The look of the truck is taller and blunter than ever, taking cues from the heavy-duty trucks.  Everything looks a little bit more squared off thanks to the chiseled details in the sheet metal from the hood to the wheel wells. This truck has been given more personality than ever, with a more macho appearance and dominating presence on the road — as a pickup should have. Depending on the trim level selected, there will be different standard features and design tweaks, but the general look of the Silverado 1500 is a very capable one.

The interior of the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 is refreshingly different than the models that it replaces. The more upright instrument panel is intelligently designed and simple. Any controls are located in a cluster to the left of the steering wheel or in the centre console area. Thoughtful details from GM include the knobs, buttons and interfaces that are made easy to read and operate, even with work gloves on. Silverado’s interior styling and quality are heavily dependent on the selected trim level. The base trim has gotten noticeably better since the redesign, though it’s still pretty basic in terms of features. On the other hand, the High Country trim rivals the top-of-the-line GMC Denali for quality and features. The cabin is a pretty comfortable place to be, even in the base model with ample legroom and thickly padded seats that provide comfort even on lengthy trips or following a long day of hard work.

The technology features in the Silverado 1500 range from basic to quite sophisticated, depending on the trim level. The Chevrolet MyLink infotainment system that is available on the Silverado allows connectivity for up to ten devices, natural language recognition, and all of the features are displayed on an eight-inch touchscreen. This year, an Enhanced MyLink version adds text message alerts, Siri Eyes Free as well as an OnStar 4G LTE connection, which turns the Silverado into a Wi-Fi hotspot. This system has been praised for being user-friendly and easy to learn.

Under the hood, the 2015 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 comes with a few engine options, depending on the trim level. All trims but the LTZ get a 4.3-litre V6 engine that generates 285 horsepower and 305 pound-feet of torque. It is matched with a six-speed automatic transmission and either rear-wheel or four-wheel drive. The LTZ gets a standard 5.3-litre V8 engine that is optional on all other models. This engine can produce 355 horsepower and 383 pound-feet of torque. The final engine is optional on the LTZ and High Country trims, and it is a 6.2-litre V8 that makes 420 horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque.

Overall, the 2015 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 is a truck that has something for everyone. It sports a good look, added refinement and more sophisticated technology, making it a better option than ever.

Power and Performance:

The 2015 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 uses a line of reengineered engines that was introduced with the redesign last year. Options include the base V-6, which is plenty powerful for most use, as well as a pair of V-8 engines.

Interiors and Special Features:

Inside, it's refreshingly different if you've spent time in any of the outgoing GMT900 trucks. GM has resisted the urge to make the interior of its trucks either more complex, or even lower and more carlike. The new instrument panel is upright and simplified, with controls clustered either just to the left of the steering wheel or in a large, upright center-console area, and GM has aimed to make all the knobs, buttons, and interfaces easy to read and operate even with work gloves on. This also helps the ungloved who just want to change a setting with only a glance at the controls. Materials have been given an upgrade, with most touchpoints now made of soft rubber.

Safety features:

With an improved frame, a new cab structure, and a revised seating position as well as more safety equipment, the current-generation Silverado performs much better than did the trucks that were replaced for 2014.
