Quick Look

The 2015 Chevrolet Colorado offers solid exterior design, a spacious cabin and two solid engines. The particular highlight for this midsize pickup truck is its 3.6-litre V6 engine, which can produce 305 horsepower and 269 pound-feet of torque. Since its Nissan and Toyota competitors haven’t updated their respective midsize trucks for a while now, the new Colorado has a chance of beating them in sales volume.

Full Review

After disappearing for a few years, the Chevrolet Colorado is back, becoming General Motors’ first midsize pickup truck in a while – after the company phased out the last Colorado and GMC Canyon. The Toyota Tacoma and Nissan Frontier have since taken over for GM in this segment. To be fair, the Colorado and Canyon didn’t have a chance against the Tacoma anyway at the time. However, the 2015 iteration may in fact be able to stand up to its rivals in terms of sales.

The exterior design is both young and sporty, being far more appealing than that of its dated competition. Ford and Ram have been struggling in this segment for several years now, while the Nissan Frontier hasn’t been updated for so long that even its newest model just feels old. Toyota has updated the Tacoma several times, but it’s been sitting on the same platform for almost a decade. The Colorado is offered in extended and crew cabs, with its best quality being the fact that it’s just the right size. The extended cab has rear doors that can only be opened by opening the front doors as well as a six-foot bed. The larger crew cab comes with a five-foot bed, but there’s also an option to get the six-foot bed. Each bed features the CornerStep and bed-rail hand-grab system, borrowed from its bigger Silverado sibling. Other exterior features include the EZ-lift, lower tailgate and optional factory spray-in bed liner.

On the inside, the Colorado borrows most of its cues from the Silverado, such as its big centre stack and logical control layout. In spite of this, the design is somehow lacking – since there’s nothing particularly alluring about it. In terms of tech features, you can get an optional eight-inch touchscreen to host the MyLink software. You’ll find that the car’s 3.4-inch display in the instrument cluster shows the important vehicle data, like fuel consumption and other numbers. The centre console gear shifter adds a bit of class to the truck without occupying too much space. Ahead of the gear shifter are the multimedia connections and USB ports.

In terms of space, the Chevrolet Colorado is definitely no Ford F-150, but when it comes to rear legroom, crew cab models offer plenty of it – even on longer trips. You will also find an under-seat storage compartment to keep all your gear organized.

Under the hood of the Colorado is a 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine that produces 200 horsepower and 191 pound-feet of torque. While this engine should be fine for fairly heavy loads, you can also get a 3.6-litre V6, which makes 305 horsepower and 269 pound-feet of torque. This engine should definitely be able to take on heavier endeavours. But no matter which engine you choose, you will get a six-speed automatic transmission complemented by the automatic grade braking and a tow/haul mode. As an option on some of the rear-wheel-drive extended cab models, you can connect the engine to a six-speed manual transmission.

Due to an arguably long absence, the 2015 Chevrolet Colorado almost feels like a new car. If you’re looking for a nice mid-size pickup truck, then definitely give this one a look – it’s miles better than most of its competitors.

Power and Performance:

The base engine will be a 2.5-liter four-cylinder making 200 horsepower and 191 pound-feet of torque. That should be enough for light duties around town and off-road, but for bigger payloads and bigger toys, an available 3.6-liter V6 will make 305 hp and 269 lb-ft of torque.

Both engines will come with a six-speed automatic transmission enhanced with automatic grade braking and a tow/haul mode. A six-speed manual will also be available on select rear-wheel-drive extended cab models. A 2.8-liter turbodiesel four-cylinder is expected for the 2016 model year.

A properly equipped Colorado is rated to tow up to 7,000 pounds, which is more than the current Tacoma. EPA fuel economy estimates haven't been announced, but a lightweight aluminum hood and active grille shutters that close at highway speeds should help the Colorado achieve better mileage than its predecessor's 26 mpg on the highway.

Interiors and Special Features:

The dashboard features many appearance cues from the Silverado, like the large center stack and controls. An optional eight-inch touch screen is home to the latest MyLink software. A 3.4-inch display resides in the instrument cluster for viewing all the important vehicle information, like fuel consumption. Six airbags come standard, including a head side curtain airbag designed to keep occupants from being ejected in a roll over crash.

"Good enough" is the term that comes to mind when looking at the dashboard’s styling. Yes, it carries the same design language from the Silverado, but it just seems to lack soul. We’re not saying it’s bad, but its just on the boring side. But with it being a truck and sold to customers who do work or dirty outdoor activities, the choice of a no-frills dash is probably the right one.

Safety features:

The Chevrolet Colorado hasn’t performed particularly well when it comes to safety, and the 2015 variant is only a slight improvement over its predecessors. The safety features that you will find in the truck include four-wheel ABS braking, child seat anchors, dusk sensing headlamps, two front headrests, stability and traction control systems, post-collision safety system, tire pressure monitoring, engine immobilizer, dual front side-mounted airbags as well as front and rear head airbags.
