Quick Look

The 2015 BMW i8 is not a standard two-door sport coupe since it also happens to be an electric vehicle. At the rear it features a turbocharged 1.5-litre three-cylinder engine that produces 231 horsepower and 236 pound-feet of torque, while right between the front wheels it has a 96-kilowatt (131-horsepower) electric motor that draws its power energy from a 5.1-kilowatt lithium-ion battery. It’s not the most powerful vehicle, but it is ridiculously fuel-efficient.

Full Review

The 2015 BMW i8 is a completely new two-door sport coupe that successfully blends sporty looks with cutting-edge technology and an eco-friendly powertrain. It’s not often that you get to see a slick, sporty coupe that occasionally has to be plugged into a wall in order to run, but that’s what you get here. However, whether you like electric vehicles or not should be irrelevant, because the i8 is simply too good to be ignored. Let’s find out why, shall we?

The new BMW i8 rides an aluminum chassis, which houses the powertrain and passenger cell. The cell is made from high-strength but lightweight carbon fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP). Thanks to the combination of aluminum and CFRP, the vehicle weighs less than 3,285 pounds. At the front, the i8 has the famous BMW kidney grille and two large air intakes. However, instead of the gull-wing doors on the concept version, this model comes with standard ones. You still get the “promised” quad exhaust system though. Overall, the i8 looks exactly like the concept, even the huge door glass and over-the-top blue highlight are gone.

Inside, the BMW i8 offers plenty of space for four adults – a perk that can be attributed to the vehicle’s 2+2 seating layout. There is a partition between the passenger compartment and boot that exists in the form of two layers of chemically-hardened glass that allows for excellent acoustic properties. And if you like luxury, then you’ll be happy to know that the seats and instrument panel are covered in special leather, which was tanned with olive leaf extract to ensure a high-quality and natural look. When designing the instrument panel and the center console, BMW also used something called a “layering” principle, which allows them to look more futuristic. As for tech features – the i8 comes with an iDrive operating system and bespoke sports steering wheel with multifunction buttons. Overall, the interior is as sophisticated as it gets – it looks the part.

Under the hood, the 2015 i8 has a turbocharged 1.5-litre three-cylinder engine that produces 231 horsepower and 236 pound-feet of torque. It’s connected to a six-speed automatic transmission and it transmits its power to the rear wheels. Since this is an electric vehicle, it comes with a large 96-kilowatt (131-horsepower) electric motor, but it’s separate from the engine, sitting right between the front wheels, which it powers through a two-speed transmission. The energy comes from a lithium-ion battery pack located between the front passengers, providing 5.1 kilowatt-hours of capacity. You can drive this car on electricity through its front wheels only or as a hybrid by using both powertrains. However, if you want to squeeze the best performance possible out of the vehicle, you can use its all-wheel-drive mode to achieve the total power rating of 362 horsepower.

As far as we are concerned, the 2015 BMW i8 is a beast of a vehicle, even if it’s not exactly the fastest supercar around. That said, it’s definitely one of the more eco-friendly vehicle of its kind, even though it looks like it consumes insane amounts of fuel. So, if you want to own a relatively fast and sporty car, but wish to avoid polluting this planet, the i8 is definitely worth checking out.

Power and Performance:

The technology built into the 2015 BMW i8 plug-in hybrid makes it an entirely new kind of sports coupe, with only one other sports car using a similar powertrain. That's the Porsche 918 Spyder, the supercar that also plugs in and can run on electricity, engine power, or both together. But the Spyder comes in at almost a million dollars, so you might expect that the $140,000 BMW i8 would be a somewhat downsized version of that car--and you'd be right.

The important thing to understand about the i8 is that it's more of a touring coupe than a track car. That's not to say there won't be higher-performance versions in the future, but today's i8 strikes a balance between sporty performance and high efficiency. While its price aligns it with more traditional competitors--the Audi R8 and Porsche 911, say--it's a much different kind of car.

Interiors and Special Features:

Safety features:

The 2015 BMW i8 plug-in hybrid hasn't been crash-tested by either the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) or the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). And give the low volume of sales projected for this $140,000-plus sports coupe, it may not get tested for a while--if ever--by those bodies.

One or both of those entities is likely to test the 2014 BMW i3 electric car, however, which uses similar construction to the i8: a body shell of carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP) sitting on top of a rolling aluminum platform that carries both the running gear and the front and rear crash structures. Early assumptions are that the i3 will do well, since all eyes will be on the first high-volume car to use carbon fiber as a structural element.
