Quick Look

The 2015 BMW Z4 28i is a convertible that doesn’t try to be anything but that. It is certainly not the most practical vehicle on the market, but it is a vehicle worth owning nonetheless. As such, those who looking for a powerful, luxurious and beautiful car for weekend trips or vacations will find much to like here. However, those in need of a commute or off-road vehicle are bound to be disappointed.

Full Review

The 2015 BMW Z4 28i is the lowest-tier model in the Z4 lineup, which only includes two-seat convertibles. So, don’t expect sedans, hatchbacks or coupes here since all you get is a car with retractable roof. That being said, the 28i is a phenomenal convertible that excels at being just that – with next to no flaws too.

Unlike many convertibles, which tend to look amazing with the top down and repellent with it up, the BMW Z4 28i looks equally amazing both ways. It achieves this thanks to a long hood, short trunk, muscular fenders and the signature BMW two-kidney grille, which looks amazing from any angle. And if you choose to raise the roof, you will transform the convertible into a nice, slick coupe. All three different trims of the Z4, which are 28i, 35i and 35is, differentiate themselves by their own unique badges and noses. The 28i unfortunately has least distinguishes grille out of all the trims, but that’s okay since it’s still a great-looking car.

Within the cabin, the 2015 Z428i is an undeniable two-seater, but it’s roomy enough to accommodate two adults comfortably. There’s plenty of headroom and legroom here, even if you’re one tall individual. Upscale materials can be seen on every surface of every object here, with the 28i models offering very convincing leatherette on the seats. Behind the seats, you will find a handy storage compartment that’s large enough fit a purse or small bag. There’s also a pass-through to the trunk, which lets you fit in larger objects like a suitcase or a few grocery bags. The strange gear selector, however, is still a touch confusing for first-time users.

If you decide to pop the hood open, you’ll find a solid 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine, which produces 240 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque, sending the power to the rear wheels. You can combine the powertrain either with a six-speed manual or eight-speed automatic transmission at no extra cost. If you get a manual-equipped model, you will find that it has an automatic stop-start function that turns off the engine when the car is stopped for better efficiency. With this engine under the hood, it take the Z4 28i to accelerate from zero to 97 km/h in 5.8 seconds, which makes this engine as fast as the V6 in the Mercedes SLK350. The 28i’s combined fuel economy rating is 10.9 litres per 100 kilometres with the manual transmission equipped. If you go for the automatic transmission, that number goes up a little, so if fuel efficiency is important to you, then we recommend using the manual transmission instead.

In general, the 2015 BMW Z4 28i is one of those vehicles that only well-off individuals can afford. Its current MSRP is $54,300, which makes it quite a luxury – especially because it’s not practical enough to be used for your daily drives or commutes. However, if you already have a “normal” car, then this convertible might just be the car you need.

Power and Performance:

The 2015 BMW Z4 28i features a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder making 240 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque. Rear-wheel drive is standard, and you can get either a six-speed manual or an eight-speed automatic at no extra cost. Manual-equipped cars include an automatic stop-start function that turns off the engine when the car is stopped to improve efficiency. In Edmunds performance testing, a manual-equipped Z4 28i went from zero to 60 mph in 5.8 seconds, similar to what the V6-powered Mercedes SLK350 runs. EPA-estimated fuel economy is 26 mpg combined (22 city/34 highway) with the manual, with a 1 mpg drop in highway mileage for the automatic.

Interiors and Special Features:

The 2015 BMW Z4 goes against the grain of two-seat roadsters in one important way: It's roomy inside. In addition to excellent headroom, the Z4 offers good legroom, even for tall drivers. The materials inside are upscale, base models offering convincing leatherette on the seats, and higher trim models offering genuine leather. There's a handy storage compartment behind the seats big enough for a purse or small bag, and a pass-through to the trunk allows larger items like a golf bag. We're still not fans of BMW's odd gear selector, which can be confusing the first time you use it.

Safety features:

Every BMW Z4 comes standard with antilock brakes, stability and traction control and side airbags. The antilock brakes integrate several features designed to improve braking performance -- one periodically wipes the brake rotors dry when the windshield wipers are in use, while another snugs the brake pads against the rotors if the driver abruptly lifts off the throttle. The BMW Assist eCall system is also standard and includes an emergency assistance button and automatic crash notification. This system can be upgraded to include BMW Assist Remote Services with features like stolen vehicle recovery and remote door unlock.
