Full Review

The 2015 BMW X3 is heading steadily into the fourth year of the second generation. The X3 was first introduced into the BMW lineup in 2004, and underwent its first and only redesign in 2011. While the X3 may be aging a bit, this vehicle still manages to remain relevant and in-demand thanks to the tweaks that BMW continues to make. New for 2015 are a diesel engine, rear-wheel drive, a front-end refresh as well as new technology and convenience features. The X3 xDrive28d falls in the mid-level range of the four available trims. This is a new addition to that range for 2015, with “d” representing the diesel engine that this vehicle comes standard with. Buyers looking for a combination of sportiness, luxury, power and efficiency will not want to overlook the X3.

The exterior design of the BMW X3 gets a minor refresh for 2015 that includes a new nose and tail-end refreshes. The front-end updates include new twin circular headlights with optional LED lamps, a more flamboyant version of the signature kidney-shaped grille, exterior mirrors with integrated signal lamps and several other minor refreshes. The back end gets a much more minor refresh, but still new enough to tie it in nicely with the overall look. The X3 feels luxurious, thanks to the brushed aluminium of the xLine, and assertive with its upright tall sport wagon-like look. The X3 has a lot visually in common with the larger X5, but still manages to keep its own proportions fit for the leaner and smaller demeanour. Standard features on the X3 xDrive28d include 18-inch wheels, rear privacy glass, automatic headlights, LED foglamps, automatic wipers, a power liftgate and more. Most of the upgrades are added through optional packages that will upgrade the look and feel of this compact crossover.

The interior of the X3 carries on this luxurious look in the well-built cabin space. BMW has done a great job at refining its interiors spaces, while still maintaining a level of familiarity. The classic gauges, sensible ergonomics and humble aesthetics of the X3 make it a very comfortable and pleasant place for driving. The surfaces in the cabin are covered with soft-touch materials to give it that high-quality feel. The front of the cabin is a very comfortable space with the available heated, leather and power-adjustable front seats. Legroom and headroom is generous in the rear seats and bench is very comfortable. Total cargo capacity maxes out at 63.3 cubic feet with the rear seats folded, which is plenty for this segment. As with the exterior, the interior of the X3 gets its real upgrades and features with the addition of the multiple available packages.

Technology features on the X3 are decent, but owners will need to make some upgrades if they want to see all of the potential come to life. Standard on the X3 features include Bluetooth phone and audio connectivity, the iDrive electronics interface with a touchpad controller and a 12-speaker sound system. Stand-alone features that can be added to the X3 are a navigation system and 16-speaker Harman Kardon surround-sound audio system. The iDrive infotainment system is quite sophisticated in its abilities and functionality. It houses all of the audio and information features in one straightforward system that has crisp graphics and quick processing times.

Under the hood of the BMW X3 xDrive28d is 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder diesel engine that produces 180 horsepower and 280 pound-feet of torque. This vehicle is paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and BMW’s all-wheel-drive system known as the xDrive. The X3 also gets a standard stop-start system that shuts the engine down when the car is idling and starts it again once the foot leaves the brake. This system was designed as a means of conserving fuel, with a combined fuel efficiency rating of 7.8 litres per 100 kilometres.

Overall, the 2015 BMW X3 xDrive328d is a great new addition to the BMW lineup. The fuel economy is outstanding, which adds even more value to this already luxurious, refined and technologically advanced vehicle.
