Quick Look

The 2015 BMW 320i is an entry-level vehicle in the 3-Series lineup. It has gone through several tweaks over the decades, but it remains first and foremost a sport sedan.

Full Review

The BMW 3-Series has traditionally been the most important model in BMW’s lineup thanks to its unbeatable popularity. Ever since its release in 1975, the 3-Series has been the most popular lineup on BMW’s roster. It has decades of experience behind, which has allowed it to develop into a smart, luxurious and above all fun-to-drive sedan. The 320i is the entry-level model in this lineup, and though it’s relatively affordable, it remains a sports car through and through. As such, it offers sleek design, a spacious cabin and some great technology aspects that won’t be too hard on the wallet.

On the outside, the BMW 320i is a classy and sleek car with no obvious indicators that this is the least expensive BMW in the 3-Series. All of BMW’s styling still shines through with many distinct details. The 320i is equipped with aggressive headlights and a modern take on the signature two-kidney grille. The roofline on the current sedan is longer, lower and has a bit more of a swoop.

The cabin of the 320i is a spacious and luxurious place to seat up to five passengers. While there are many different packages available that will definitely distinguish the level of luxury that the 320i comes with, the base model isn’t too shabby either. The horizontally-oriented instrument panel helps to maximize space and functionality for a coherent look and feel. When it comes to space in this cabin, it would be hard to find more in any other entry-level luxury sedan, and the rear seats beat most of the competition in terms of legroom. The seats are comfortable and will be supportive enough for any journey, long or short. The trunk is above-average, offering 13 cubic feet of space. BMW has built an interior space that has a contemporary feel, but is still inviting and comfortable.

As for technology features – the BMW 320i comes equipped with enough to keep its drivers and passengers entertained and informed. Most of this is taken care of through BMW’s iDrive infotainment system, which comes standard on the 320i, featuring a 6.5-inch touchscreen. The electronics interface is pretty good, but for a true luxurious experience an upgrade to a larger screen should be a consideration. The iDrive system is surprisingly user-friendly this time around, thanks to its straightforward menus, crisp graphics and quick response times. There are still some issues that require some ironing out, but generally speaking, this system does its job well.

As for the powertrain, the 2015 BMW 320i gets a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine that generates 180 horsepower and 200 pound-feet of torque. It comes standard with rear-wheel drive and a choice between a six-speed manual or eight-speed automatic transmission. Both of these transmissions come with an automatic stop-star function that turns the engine off when the car stops in order to save fuel.

Overall, the BMW 320i is an amazing entrance to the luxury car market. This car is well-refined, spacious and sporty in its look and feel, staying authentic to the BMW brand. The value this car offers is amazing, which makes entering the luxury market not too hard on the wallet.

Power and Performance:

2015 BMW 3 Series sedans offer a choice between rear-wheel drive and the xDrive all-wheel-drive system, while AWD is standard on 3 Series wagons. A six-speed manual is available on sedans, but the wagon comes only with an eight-speed automatic transmission (optional on the sedan). Automatic-equipped 3 Series cars with the Sport or M Sport package have a "sport" version of this transmission with steering wheel paddle shifters. Both transmissions come with an automatic stop-start function that turns off the engine when the car stops in order to save fuel.

Interiors and Special Features:

Although the 3 Series cabin has a contemporary feel, BMW has taken pains to make sure it's still a comfortable and inviting place. The company's classic analog gauges provide a historical link with BMWs of previous decades, while the optional thematic equipment lines allow plenty of personal customization. Materials quality is exceptional throughout, and it's all put together with care.
