Quick Look

The 2015 Audi S3 is as edgy as it appears to be, delivering a sporty engine and slick, coupe-like appearance. It’s a sport sedan in the truest sense, which we blame on its fantastic 2.0-litre direct-injected and forced-induction four-cylinder engine that can produce the impressive 290 horsepower and 280 pound-feet of torque. Car enthusiasts should definitely be pleased with this one.

Full Review

The 2015 Audi S3 is the truest sport sedan that you can imagine, so don’t expect any of the mislabelling that’s been affecting the other so-called sport sedans. The aspects that allow the S3 to earn this prestigious calling include its turbocharged acceleration, four-wheel drive and low, athletic stance. It’s not for everyone, but it will definitely satisfy you if you have an itch to drive something edgy.

In terms of looks, it’s clear that the 2015 S3 belongs to Audi’s new family of small cars, all carrying some of form of A3 badging. The family is set to include the e-tron hatchback wagon, with plug-in hybrid tech, A3 Cabriolet convertible and four-door A3 sedan, with either a gasoline or diesel engine. The Q3 crossover is arguably a part of this family as well – the same way the Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class crossover belongs to the CLA-Class family. So, what is the S3 exactly? Like the A3s, it’s a compact four-door sedan, but it’s not as small as it appears since it’s about the same size as the first-generation A4 from two decades ago.

The S3 manages a sporty look with effortless cool, boasting low ground clearance, sloping roofline and stylish coupe-like lines. With its superb aerodynamics, there’s no doubt that this is car is meant for high speeds.

On the inside, the Audi S3 has a surprisingly simple design aesthetic to it that reminds us a little bit of Volvo. As most Audis nowadays, it has the MMI infotainment system, which comes with solid yet minimalist controls that manage what you’d find in the older and pricier models. Unlike the A3, S3 features brushed aluminum trim, sport seats, a D-shaped steering wheel, aluminum pedals and an improved instrument cluster with a turbo boost gauge. The sport seats and steering wheel are both available with contrast stitching. Despite all the minimalism, there’s nothing cheap about this cabin – it’s an Audi interior to the core. The only issue you might experience is the lack of space at the back, but since this is a driver-oriented car, we are not too bothered by this.

Under the hood of the S3 is a 2.0-litre direct-injected and forced-induction four-cylinder engine that can produce 290 horsepower and 280 pound-feet of torque. It takes 4.8 seconds for the sedan to accelerate to 97 km/h – all thanks to the engine’s impressive torque output. Those of you who like options will be disappointed to learn that this engine can only be connected to a six-speed paddle-shifted, dual-clutch transmission. In spite of this “omission,” it’s an impressive transmission, channeling the engine’s turbo power and torque to all four wheels – since quattro all-wheel drive is standard here. The addition of a manual gearbox would’ve been appreciated, given the vehicle’s sporty nature, but the six-speed will do for now.

If you’re in the market for an affordable sport sedan – with about $40,000 to spare – then the 2015 Audi S3 is definitely worth considering. No, this car is not for everyone, but if you are a car enthusiast, like us, then why not have at least a look?

Power and Performance:

The S3 will use the same turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder found in the top A3 trim level, although the S3's engine will make 292 horsepower (compared to the A3's 220 hp) and send its power to all four wheels through a six-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.

A four-mode drive select system will allow drivers to choose one of four modes that adjust throttle response, steering effort and shift points. The S3 also rides on a performance-tuned suspension and unique 18-inch wheels (19-inch wheels will also be available).

Interiors and Special Features:

Inside, the 2015 Audi S3 continues to impress. The standard A3 has a refreshingly simple, almost Scandinavian design aesthetic throughout. Its unique MMI infotainment system features tactile and minimalist controls, outshining the more complicated MMI systems in Audi’s older and more expensive models. The S3 builds on the A3 by adding brushed aluminum trim, sport seats, and a D-shape steering wheel (both with contrast stitching), aluminum pedals, and a new instrument cluster with a turbo boost gauge. More aggressive sport seats -- labeled Super Sports Seats in the European order guide -- are in the pipeline. It’s clear the S3 is a 100 percent true Audi inside and out. You’ll struggle to find any cost-cutting measures.

Safety features:

The S3 brings a slew of new technology to the table, starting with a platter of safety gear prepped for five-star crash ratings. Airbags and stability control are joined by pre-collision restraint prep and simulated torque vectoring on the front wheels via the S3's anti-lock brakes. The options include adaptive cruise control that maintains a traffic crawl with a tap of the cruise's resume button, and blind-spot monitors.

Every S3 will come with standard power windows, locks, and mirrors; cruise control; leather upholstery; Bluetooth; and a panoramic sunroof. There's also a pop-up screen for the Multi-Media Interface (MMI), which powers up and down out of the way on command, a nice touch compared to the fixed, fragile-looking screens on the latest Benzes and BMWs.
