Quick Look

The 2015 Audi A8 is one of the most luxurious cars on the market, delivering three excellent powertrains and a slick new body. Its cabin admittedly looks a bit outdated, but the A8 more than makes up for it with its special features.

Full Review

The 2015 Audi A8 is a fantastic yet ridiculously expensive luxury sedan that will provide plenty of comfort and fun driving memories, if you have the cash for it. This year’s model comes with a modified external body, additional 15 horsepower on its V8 engine and a variety of special features. So, if you have $90,700 to spend on a new car, then give the A8 a try. Otherwise, keep dreaming.

On the outside, the 2015 A8 is as slick and sexy as it’s always been – but just a touch sexier. This model features an all-new bumper and grille detailing as well as new headlights. If you happen to remember the oddly-shaped panel creases – where both front and back bumps are attached to the fenders – then you’ll be happy to know that they look much, much better now. You also get a hefty chunk of appearance packages, which modify the wheels and grille to look even better.

You’ll notice that the new taillights are now wider yet slimmer than in the previous models as are the flush exhaust outlets. Meanwhile, the trunk now carries a wide chrome slash, which separates it from the likes of A4 and A6 Audis. Overall, we’d say that fierce competitor, the Porsche Panamera, looks a touch slicker, but that’s not saying much – since they’re both excellent-looking vehicles.

On the inside, however, things haven’t changed as much, which means that the 2015 A8 looks as luxurious and comfortable as before. There are some notable trim and colour changes though, such as the addition of higher-quality Alcantara, leather and suede upholstery.

However, if at a glance, this cabin looks dated to you, then you’re onto something here. The dashboard in particular seems far too angular and old-fashioned, reminding us of the insides of 1990s A4. If you’re looking for something that looks clean and up-to-date, check out the S-Class cabin, which is miles better than this one. In spite of all that, the A8 still has very expensive-looking interior space that is sure to impress anyone who can’t afford this car.

When it comes to features, however, the Audi doesn’t kid around. The new A8 comes with the first use of its Matrix LED lighting system, which is capable of continuously changing lighting direction and overall intensity. This system works in part due 25 LEDs contained within each headlamp and a smart cornering light system, which can use route information from the navigation system to make lighting changes. There’s also a new lane system, which makes adjustments to steering; a night-vision system that can now detect both animals and pedestrians; and parking assistance. You definitely get your money’s worth in this department.

The powertrains have received a bit of an update as well – particularly the 4.0-litre V8 engine, which now can pump out 435 horsepower and 444 pound-feet of torque. The new engine can accelerate to the 100-kilometre mark in less than five seconds, which is very, very impressive. However, the base 3.0-litre V6 remains unchanged, delivering the same 333 horsepower and 325 pound-feet of torque as before. And for those who crave more power, there’s the insanely overpowered 12-cylinder engine, which can produce 500 horsepower – but you likely won’t use that much anyway.

In the end, 2015 Audi A8 is a feature-rich and powerful luxury car that most drivers will never get to own. However, if you have the means, then definitely take this car out for a spin – it’s amazing.

Power and Performance:

Engine choices remain the same, with a supercharged 3.0-liter V6 delivering 333 hp and 325 pound-feet of torque in the base model. More power is on tap from the optional turbocharged 4.0-liter V8, now making 435 hp and 444 lb-ft of torque. If you're particularly hungry for power, there's always the optional 500-hp 12-cylinder, now offering cylinder deactivation for improved gas mileage.

Interiors and Special Features:

The interior of the A8 for 2015 is basically carryover, with subtle trim and theme changes as a part of the Design Select options packages. These bring a higher grade of leather, suede and Alcantara for the headliner. Overall, it is still a very posh and clearly quite expensive cabin.

The style of the A8’s interior is starting to look very dated, but with a busy appearance to the dashboard in particular. This is in marked contrast to the new S-Class cabin, which is a simpler and more cohesive shape that reflects the current luxury mood more than the new A8, which still looks a lot like a jumbo 1990s A4.

The S-Class cabin is not a smash hit, however, with Honda Accord-style panel screens dominating the view forward and a steering wheel that may have been designed in collaboration with PlaySkool. It is a strange two-spoke wheel with a creepy grin shape in the bottom half.

Safety features:

The 2015 A8 offers a plethora of safety features, all of which contribute to an excellent safety package overall. Some of the standout features include traction and stability control, turn signal mirrors, emergency braking assist, dual front and dual rear side-mounted airbags, remote anti-theft alarm system and engine immobilizer. Unfortunately, there are no test results from the National Traffic Safety Administration or the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, which there probably won’t be anyway – since Audi doesn’t sell too many A8s anyway.
