Quick Look

The 2015 Audi A5 offers so many goodies that it’s hard to believe its base model costs less than $50,000. Everything this two-door coupe can provide – from its powerful engine to hot looks – exudes style and sophistication. Though its 2.0-litre engine does not quite reach the level of high performance, it still makes driving this small car a joy.

Full Review

The 2015 Audi A5 is a two-door coupe that without a doubt owes much of its appeal to its stylish outward appearance. In fact, it may very well be one of the best-looking cars this year – and that’s saying a lot. But aside from looks, this small car also delivers a superior amount tech features, strong engine, solid fuel efficiency and impressive safety features. In other words, there’s very little to complain about here – as long as this vehicle is what you want.

On the outside, the 2015 A5 takes its cues from Audi’s vintage cars, looking as elegant and striking as ever – regardless of whether you take the coupe or convertible. The only oversight as far as design goes can be found at the front, where the deep, open-mouth grille appears to be too large and just plain strange, given the fact that the new headlights are now slimmer while the grille frame is subtler. It’s still a bold and aggressive vehicle that’s hard to ignore when seen on a showroom floor. The only vehicle that’s even more appealing is the A5’s cousin, the S5.

Inside, the new Audi is as lavish and luxurious as you’d imagine, involving a clean yet functional design along with high-quality materials and plenty of attention to small details. You get your intricate instruments as well as some metallic trim on switches and buttons to add a high-end touch to the whole affair. In terms of space, there’s really only enough of it for two people and their luggage, but not much else. That being said, the trunk is actually surprisingly large, offering 16.3 cubic feet of space. But that’s only if you get a coupe, since the Cabriolets provide only 11.3 cubic feet. There are rear seats, but it’s best to fold them down to expand the cargo area instead of cramming people there. The seats at the front are well-bolstered and relaxing, though the higher-end models, like the S and RS, offer more features. You do get leather upholstery, if that’s your preference.

In terms of features, Audi still offers its Multi-Media Interface, which is standard across all A5’s. It offers a rotary controller and display in the centre that allows you to access audio, entertainment and other features. It does take a while to learn how this thing works, but once you do, it will be easy to use.

Under the hood, the 2015 A5, a 2.0-litre turbocharged inline four-cylinder engine that can produce 220 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. With sharp throttle response, it’s almost always a quiet and smooth powertrain that easily matches the competitive offerings from Cadillac, BMW and Mercedes-Benz. The engine can be connected either to an eight-speed automatic or six-speed manual transmission, either of which can let you accelerate to 100 km/h in less than seven seconds.

Overall, the 2015 Audi A5 is a fantastic offering that does just about everything right. It’s not the most powerful car, but if you need a solid roadster for your weekend journeys, then this car will definitely satisfy you.

Power and Performance:

With the A5, a 2.0-liter turbocharged in-line four-cylinder is standard. Upgraded for the 2015 model year with nine more horsepower, the 220-horsepower four-cylinder provides a peppy, fun-to-drive nature, though it doesn't quite rise to the realm of high-performance. Thanks to its 258 pound-feet of torque, however, in-gear and low-speed acceleration feels strong. Throttle response is crisp, and while the engine can sound a bit buzzy or gritty near the top of its rev range, it's generally quiet and smooth, comparing well with competitive offerings from Cadillac, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz.

Depending on the body style you choose, you'll have a varied range of transmission options in the A5. Coupe models offer a choice of an eight-speed automatic or a six-speed manual. Both suit the A5's character well, though when paired with quattro all-wheel drive, the eight-speed automatic's extra range helps deliver better in-gear acceleration at a range of speeds. The automatic is also quick-shifting, making it a valid choice for the enthusiast, even compared to the manual. Audi estimates 0-60 mph times for the automatic-equipped A5 at 6.6 seconds, while the manual is still a touch quicker at 6.4 seconds.

Interiors and Special Features:

There's a chance that your rear-seat passengers are going to wish for more space with the 2015 Audi A5 lineup, but those up front will have the opportunity to enjoy its excellent seat comfort and fantastic build quality.

Materials, throughout the range, are high-quality and solid-feeling. Surfaces gleam with a satin luster, and the blend of leather, wood, metal, and plastic is masterfully executed, especially in the RS5, where stainless steel and carbon fiber trim are available.

Safety features:

High sticker prices and low sales volumes keep the agencies that evaluate safety from crash-testing the Audi A5 lineup, so the 2015 model hasn't been rated by NHTSA or the IIHS. However, a long list of standard and available safety equipment earns it high marks in our book.

Throughout the A5 range, visibility is very good, though the Cabriolet's soft top can limit rearward visibility somewhat. An available rearview camera and reverse parking sensors helps improve low-speed maneuvering safety.
