Quick Look

The 2015 Acura RDX is a fantastic compact SUV that seems to exist specifically to please fashion-conscious parents. However, the RDX is not all about looks since it also delivers a decent performance and plenty of safety features. With a V6 that can pump out 273 horsepower and 251 pound-feet of torque, this gentle giant makes driving more joyful than its crossover-like appearance lets on.

Full Review

The 2015 Acura RDX is a compact SUV for fashion-conscious families who hate the bulkiness of its competitors. The best part, of course, is that the RDX also delivers a decent performance performance and plenty of safety features. Its cabin is nothing to scoff at either since it delivers plenty of comfort and even more space – but more on that later.

When it comes to the exterior look of the second-generation RDX, it’s clear that Acura has learned from its past mistakes with the TL and ZDX, neither of which looked “right.” Unlike those vehicles, the RDX is a handsome and sporty compact SUV that easily avoids any sort of controversy – which is something several of its predecessors couldn’t do. Admittedly, its profile reminds us of the Honda CR-V, but thanks to its forward stance, rising crease line and sloping rear window, the RDX looks far more athletic overall. At the front, you also get an elegant yet slightly pointy nose, with the “Acura” logo right in the centre, and a roof that gently blends into the tail.

On the inside, the new Acura RDX manages to successfully combine design with function, which, by our accounts, is a rare feat. The centre console still features quite a few buttons and knobs, but they are all easy to see and reach. The cabin also offers plenty of soft-touch materials as well as a 10-way power driver's seat, which we appreciate. However, if you find yourself at the front, but not in the driver’s seat, you might feel a little short since the seat does readjust for height. That being said, the RDX does make good use of its interior space, being able to easily fit up to three passengers in the back. The rear seat also comes with a 60/40 split, which allows for 76.9 cubic feet of cargo space. In other words, it’s a spacious vehicle no matter how you slice – and we like that.

The only problem with the cabin is the lack of leading-edge tech features like radar adaptive cruise control, night vision and pedestrian detection. If its BMW and Mercedes rivals had none of those, we wouldn’t complain at all, but since they do, this issue is worth mentioning.

Its safety features a plentiful though. It has front, side and side-curtain airbags, as well as anti-lock brakes, stability and traction control, daytime running lights, a backup camera and rollover sensor for triggering the right airbags.

Under the hood, the 2015 RDX has only one engine, but it’s a good one. The 3.5-litre V6 can yield 273 horsepower and 251 pound-feet of torque, while being connected to a six-speed automatic transmission. Front-wheel drive is standard, but if you want a bit more control than you can opt for all-wheel drive. The RDX is not particularly powerful, but since its curb weight is well under 4,000 pounds, the amount of power is more than enough to give the SUV its athletic edge. The vehicle also benefits from quite a bit of efficiency thanks to a system that deactivates two or even three cylinders when full power is not needed. The RDX’s towing capacity is a disappointment, being only 1,500 pounds. By comparison, the Audi Q5 can tow up to 4,400 pounds. In spite of that, the new Acura is a joy to drive, so if towing is the least of your worries – then forget about the RDX’s measly rating and enjoy everything else it has to offer.

All in all, the 2015 Acura RDX is a fantastic SUV that values performance and space over anything else. It may have a few flaws here and there, but it’s still worth a look, especially if you need a stylish family vehicle.

Power and Performance:

Call it a mystery. With the last redesign given to the Acura RDX, the brand decided to buck the trend toward turbocharging and downsizing in favor of a large, 3.5-liter V-6.That might come as an odd decision from a company that's known for technology and efficiency, although the V-6 does return a decent 28 mpg highway.

The benefit of going with a big engine is readily apparent from the driver's seat; the RDX feels peppy, smooth, and strong for everything from urban stop-and-go to rural high-speed passing. Under full throttle, the RDX willingly moves quickly without requiring dramatic multi-gear downshifts from the six-speed automatic (good, because the automatic can be hesitant when you really need it)

Interiors and Special Features:

Form and function successfully intersect in the RDX's cabin. Yes, there are still quite a few buttons and knobs planted in the center console, but they are easy to see and reach. Soft-touch material abounds, and the 10-way power driver's seat is a treat. Front passengers, though, may feel like they're riding low since that seat doesn't adjust for height. We also like the RDX for its smart use of space. When not sitting up to three passengers in the roomy back seat, it folds in a 60/40 spit to create up to 76.9 cubic feet of cargo space.

Safety features:

The 2015 Acura RDX comes standard with antilock brakes, stability and traction control, front side airbags, side curtain airbags, active front head restraints and a rearview camera. In Edmunds brake testing, an all-wheel-drive RDX came to a stop from 60 mph in 127 feet, which is a few feet longer than average for this class.
