The 2014 Volkswagen Passat is conservative by design, but it still manages to offer plenty of features, including an all-new four-cylinder engine, solid interior design and advanced safety capabilities. It’s a fantastic alternative to family sedans like the Accord and Toyota.

The 2014 Volkswagen Passat is a fine alternative to family sedans like the Honda Accord and Toyota Camry, delivering an all-new four-cylinder engine, fantastic interior design and top-of-the-line safety capabilities. There are three Passat models to consider: base S, trendy SE and lavish SEL Premium. Inside, the 2014 Passat is slick and stylish, offering a cleanly rendered layout of controls that makes sense – something that many of its competitors fail to bring to the table. Some of the finishes are a little less appealing than those found in older models, but they are still good enough to contend with other family sedans released this year. Volkswagen once again brings top quality to the Passat's exterior design. There may not be too many innovations here, but the overall slimmer look is very noticeable and much appreciated too, especially the much thinner new grille. Under the hood, the base S and SE models still come with the old 170-horsepower five-cylinder engine, which doesn't deliver decent acceleration or fuel economy in comparison to other modern engines. But if you're willing to overlook this bit of travesty, you'll find that the new 1.8-litre turbo four in the SEL models is much more appealing, offering a greater power output and more torque. That said, those who are looking for an efficient engine should look no further than Volkswagen's turbodiesel. This engine may be slower, but the EPA highway rating of 5.5 litres per 100 kilometres and an optional dual-clutch automatic more than compensate for that, making it the cheapest engine to maintain. But if you're looking to indulge, you can try out the 280-horsepower V-6 option, though this engine may feel a bit too rambunctious for a vehicle with such a restrained design. The new Volkswagen Passat also comes with a plethora of safety features, having received top scores from various road safety organizations, including the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. What makes the 2014 Passat stand out from the rest of sedans is the Car-Net service, which functions similarly to GM's OnStar system, offering emergency assistance, stolen-car tracking, speed limits and remote unlocking. Overall, the 2014 Volkswagen Passat is a fine sedan that's a touch classier than other options on the market. In other words, if you like European cars, then this one will not let you down.

The 2014 Volkswagen Passat is a family sedan that bears a very conservative and restrained appearance. In other words, simplicity is the name of the game here. To achieve this, Volkswagen has utilized clean surfaces, avoiding the use of too many details and spare lines. There is a bit of a similarity to the older Volkswagen Quantum, thanks to many slimming features, especially those found in its new grille. In terms of size, the 2014 Passat is one of the biggest sedans on the market. It's 191.7 inches long and 72.2 inches wide, carrying a 110.4-inch wheelbase. When compared to other vehicles in its class, the Passat fits right in. It's only a few inches shorter than the Accord and slightly longer than the Sonata. Passat's hefty size is even more apparent on the inside since the car offers plenty of adult space in front and back. It's definitely big enough to provide a comfortable experience for your entire family.

Power and Performance:The 2014 Volkswagen Passat comes with plenty of engines to choose from. The first on the list is a 2.5-litre, 170-horsepower five-cylinder, which isn’t overly competitive these days due to its age. It accelerates to 90 kilometres per hour in about 8.2 seconds when combined with five-speed manual transmission, and that’s quite slow. When paired with a six-speed automatic, it takes half a second longer. In terms of fuel economy, the EPA highway gas mileage rating is at 7.3 litres per 100 kilometres, which is behind the rating of many other sedans. That said, the 1.8-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine is much better, despite coming with the same 170 horsepower. Thanks to well-adjusted turbocharging and additional features like an integrated exhaust manifold, it accelerates much faster, reaching the 90-km/h mark in 7.3 seconds. The best Passat engine, however, is the turbodiesel 2.0-litre four thanks to its 236 pound-feet of torque and fuel economy rating of 5.5 litres per 100 kilometres on the highway. Those features more than make up for its rather slow acceleration rate: it takes about 9.3 seconds to reach the 90-km/h mark with manual transmission and 9.1 seconds with dual-clutch automatic. Finally, there’s also the 3.6-litre, 280-horsepower V-6 engine, which accelerates to 90 km/h in about 6.5 seconds. Since it’s lacking in fuel economy and a little too expensive, this engine is not recommended for those looking to save some cash.
Interiors and Special Features:Just like the exterior design, the interior look of the 2014 Volkswagen Passat is rather tame. The good thing is that everything is where it should be – all the buttons, switches and so forth. The bad thing is that the look will not blow you away in any capacity. It’s simple and efficient, but it’s not amazing. That said, it features very supportive front seats and plenty of legroom and headroom in the back. The driver gets good rear visibility along with gauges that can be easily seen even during sunlight and thick but comfortable steering wheel controls. Front and rear cup holders are all conveniently placed, meaning that they’re never in the way yet always there when you need them. There’s also plenty of cargo space for those who need it. The 2014 Passat’s infotainment system is quite good too, featuring the standard AM/FM/CD player and a six-disc in-dash CD changer (but that’s only for the SE models and up). The S and SE model owners can add a five-inch LCD touchscreen and GPS system, while the SEL model owners can also add a 6.5-inch LCD touchscreen and a 30GB hard drive. Finally, there’s the new fast-pairing Bluetooth integration, which may be a bit unusual for most drivers. Basically, instead of speaking a command or touching a screen, the driver will have to look through their phone. To top that off, none of the models feature voice command control, so don’t get your hopes up for that.
Safety features:The 2014 Volkswagen Passat has received plenty of praises for its safety from organizations like the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety and the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. On top of all the standard airbags and other typical features, the Passat offers a hill-holder function for all the manual-transmission models and extra visibility, thanks to large glass areas, fold-down rear headrests and skinny roof columns. Yet the most interesting safety feature of them all is the Car-Net service, which offers emergency assistance, stolen-car tracking, remote unlocking and speed limits.
