The Toyota Prius has been very popular amongst consumers who want to maximize on fuel economy. So it makes sense for Toyota to expand the Prius line. The first step is the Prius V, a compact station wagon version of the original vehicle. With its smooth ride and unbelievable fuel economy, the 2014 Toyota Prius V is sure to quickly make spot for itself in your top 3.
The first thing you’ll notice about the 2014 Toyota Prius V is it receives a much higher roofline in the back than the regular Prius model, giving it much more cargo space. The Prius V get 34.3 cubic feet of cargo space with the second row folded down, which easily stores away to make space for whatever it is you need to transport.
The high rear roofline also makes the doors taller, making for easy entrance and exit for both front and rear passengers. There’s plenty of room in the back seat, offering an ample amount of leg and headroom. The seats slide back and forth to adjust legroom as necessary, and they also recline as well.
Up front, it’s the familiar Prius. There’s a digital display high in the centre of the dashboard with your gauges. It’s in a great spot that offers easy visibility of your most critical stats. So of the controls are a little bit quirky, especially the electronic shifter. The shifter is a little wand that you shift around and it’s not entirely intuitive, there’s also a separate button you push in order to put the car in park.
The touchscreen entertainment console in the 2014 Toyota Prius V is a little bit cramped and it’s hard to pick the pre-set you’re looking for while you’re driving. It also features the Toyota InTune system which uses your cellphone data to connect to apps for the weather, traffic, internet radio, or even do a Bing search. The screen also serves as a display for the back-up camera, a standard feature which is awesome.
One thing that’s great about the 2014 Prius V is the driver visibility is much better than that in the original Prius. A big reason for that is the large, single rear window rather than the split window in the regular Prius. All the other windows in the 2014 Toyota Prius V are really nice and large, allowing for maximum visibility all around the car.
The 2014 Toyota Prius V definitely isn’t a sports car; it provides a decent drive that’s comfortable and pleasant. Steering has decent weight to it and it is fairly responsive. The ride is a little bit firm, but despite this it’s still a great car. The 2014 Prius V uses the same 1.8-litre four-cylinder continuously variable transmission and hybrid drivetrain that’s in the regular Prius. Acceleration is adequate, that’s about it.
Now for the main reason you buy a Prius: fuel economy. The 2014 Toyota Prius V is heavier, less aerodynamic, and has different gearing than a regular Prius. However, at 11.2L/100km overall, that’s really a small trade-off in fuel efficiency between the two models given the Prius V’s added versatility.

| Power and Performance: | The standard Prius drivetrain carries over almost unchanged to the Prius wagon, which is a good 300 pounds heavier. But the 98-horsepower, 1.8-liter engine and pair of electric motor-generators seem more stressed in the bigger car, and the Prius V is both slower and more prone to engine howling when maximum power is demanded than the Liftback. We found it to struggle under heavy loads and on steep hills when filled with people and cargo. Three drive modes can be selected instead of the default hybrid setting: Eco, for better fuel economy; Power, for those steep hills; and EV, for all-electric drive at low speeds. We found the Eco mode almost intolerably slow, and Power simply kept the hybrid wagon up with average traffic. The EV mode worked as promised, though, allowing all-but-silent travel for up to 1 mile. | Interiors and Special Features: | The 2014 Toyota Prius V offers generous interior room and useful versatility for carrying people or hauling cargo with ease. The rear seat can slide fore and aft to increase legroom or cargo space behind the seat, and it also folds over for more cargo space or will recline to enhance comfort. In addition, the front-passenger seat folds flat for hauling long items. There are storage spots throughout the interior, including space under the rear seats for such as umbrellas. And, in front, the open center stack gives a feeling of expansion and roominess. The "V" for "versatility" is entirely appropriate. The 2014 Prius V is offered in three trim levels: Two, Three and Five. A base model Two includes automatic climate control, a 6-speaker AM/FM/CD audio system with auxiliary input and 6.1-inch touch screen, rearview camera, remote keyless entry and five cup holders. Prius V Five models add the Entune infotainment system with navigation, heated front seats, LED headlights and integrated fog lights. For 2014 all models are equipped with Daytime Running Lights, electronic stability controls and driving aids as standard, and there is a comprehensive array of occupant-protection features. The major option for the 2014 Prius V is the Advanced Technology Package, available only on the top-line Prius V Five. | Safety features: | Every 2014 Toyota Prius V comes standard with antilock disc brakes, stability and traction control, front side airbags, side curtain airbags and a driver knee airbag. A rearview camera is standard on the Three and Five trim levels. In addition, Five models with the Advanced Technology package include a pre-collision safety system (which retracts the seatbelts and initiates braking in dire situations when a crash is deemed unavoidable) and Toyota's Safety Connect telematics system (which includes emergency assistance and a stolen-vehicle locator). In brake testing, the Prius V stopped from 60 mph in 129 feet, which is a bit longer than average. In government crash tests, the hybrid wagon earned a perfect five stars for overall crash safety. It earned four stars for its crash protection in frontal impacts and five stars for side impacts. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave the Toyota Prius V its highest possible rating of "Good" in the moderate-overlap frontal-offset, side and roof strength crash tests.
