The 2014 Toyota FJ Cruiser comes in a single two-door body style, with smaller reverse opening side access doors for easy rear-seat entry and exit. For driver convenience, the multi-functional steering wheel has hands-free phone and audio controls to make sure your eyes stay on the road and reduce distraction.

The 2014 Toyota FJ Cruiser is powered by a 4.0-litre six-cylinder engine which sends 260-horsepower to the rear-wheels, or available all-wheel-drive. The engine also pumps out 271 pound-feet of torque via a five-speed automatic transmission.

Fuel efficiency ratings for the 2014 Toyota FJ Cruiser clock in at 13.84 L/100km city driving and 11.76 L/100km highway. Not the best of its class, but definitely not the worst either.

The 2014 FJ Cruiser isn't the strongest performer on the highway, but it's totally at home on the trails and crawling over rocks.

Its 4.0-liter V-6 is a real gem, producing 260 horsepower and 271 pound-feet of torque, and both the five-speed automatic and six-speed manual transmissions make the most of what the engine offers. Relative to other off-road machines, it's quick off the line, and it's adequate at passing at the highway, even if it isn't a rocket.

On the road, it's hard to gush about the FJ's driving dynamics. Its tall tires, tall body, and 4,000-pound-plus curb weight add up to a lot of body roll in the corners. Maneuverability is disappointing, and the FJ is safe in quick lane-change maneuvers but definitely not confidence-inspiring. This is simply a vehicle that drives larger than it looks.

Thanks to its set of sturdy underpinnings that are borrowed from the previous-generation Toyota 4Runner, the FJ Cruiser performs exceptionally well off-road. There's enough wheel articulation to negotiate some challenging situations without making too many on-road sacrifices, and this SUV has no problem traversing through water as high as 27.5 inches. Of all stock vehicles, the FJ has some of the best approach and departure angles.

The rear-wheel-drive model can only be equipped with the automatic, while the all-wheel-drive model allows buyers to choose between the manual or the auto. Another boon of the all-wheel-drive model is its mix of traditional mechanical and more modern electronic means of gaining and maintaining traction; a system called A-TRAC helps reduce wheel spin and redistribute torque, and it's helpful on the road as well as off it.

Interiors and Special Features:

Toyota engineers and designers gave the 2014 FJ Cruiser an interior that's very well-suited to a combination of off-road rigors and daily driving commutes. It's functional, durable, modern and accommodatingly comfortable. Seats are upholstered in water-resistant fabric and rubber is used on the floor. Rear-seat bottoms are removable for extra storage space and large rotary knobs can be operated while wearing gloves. Keeping watch over the proceedings is the inclinometer, which measures tilt of the body and might help prevent the embarrassment of tipping the SUV over and into the bottom of some canyon.

For 2014, the well-equipped base FJ Cruiser SUV is equipped with 2-wheel drive (2WD), a 5-speed automatic transmission, air conditioning, power windows and locks, a 6-speaker CD/MP3 audio system, auxiliary audio jack, a USB port, Bluetooth connectivity for phone and streaming audio, XM satellite radio, steering-wheel audio controls, electronic stability and traction controls, front-seat side-mounted airbags, roll-sensing side-curtain airbags, two front airbags and 17-inch black steel wheels. Four-wheel-drive FJs come standard with a 6-speed manual transmission, 2-speed transfer case and a locking rear differential (standard with the manual transmission and optional with the automatic).

Optional equipment for the Toyota FJ Cruiser includes keyless entry, cruise control, rear parking assist, rearview camera, auto-dimming rearview mirror, 10-speaker JBL audio system with powered subwoofer and a 115V/400W power outlet. Off-road options include the Off-Road Package, automatic transmission (4WD models) with a rear differential lock, A-TRAC active traction control and an inclinometer. The Trail Teams Special Edition Package includes the Off-Road Package, Cement Gray exterior paint with matching roof and black bumpers, front grille and door handles, mirror-mounted illumination markers, cyclone pre-air cleaner, trail-rated Bilstein shocks, rearview camera, JBL audio system, BFG All-Terrain tires, TRD alloy wheels and 12V/100W and 115V/400W outlets.

Standard safety features on the 2014 Toyota FJ Cruiser include antilock disc brakes, traction and stability control, front-seat side airbags, side curtain airbags and active front head restraints.

In crash testing by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, the FJ Cruiser received the top rating of "Good" in the moderate-overlap frontal-offset and side-impact tests. Its seat/head restraint design was also rated "Good" for whiplash protection in rear impacts. The FJ received the second-best rating of "Acceptable" in the Institute's roof-strength crash test.
