Negotiate Smarter with the Best Car Buying Tools
Available either as a sedan or a hatchback, the 2014 Subaru WRX offers a solid amount of power and excellent handling. Its turbocharged engine allows it to accelerate to the 100-kilometre mark in less than six seconds, which is just phenomenal. Its fuel economy is admittedly a bit subpar, but the amount of power you get in return makes for a very fair trade-off.
The 2014 Subaru WRX effortlessly delivers top performance, despite being built on the same platform as the previous-generation Impreza. So, yes, it’s a slightly “dated” vehicle, but you won’t notice that. Available as either a hatchback or a sedan, the WRX is quick, nimble and controllable – it’s everything you can ask for from a car.
The relationship between this car and Impreza is especially apparent on the outside. That said, you’ll find a few features that make it stand out. Those include the new quad-tipped exhaust, aerodynamic shape and a more aggressive face. In general, the WRX is a much sportier-looking car than the Impreza, which become readily apparent upon closer inspection. So, when you see this car for the first time, don’t just assume it’s another Impreza with some extra features. They are two vastly different cars.
On the inside, however, the WRX could use a little more polish. The design is just far too simple and straightforward for its own good – and not in favour of elegance, like in the case of the recent Volkswagen Passat. To put it plainly: this cabin is just boring and uninspired. You’ll also find a lot of cheap, hard plastics and unintuitive tech gadgets. The outdated touchscreen interface for the navigation system is particularly annoying due to confusing controls and terrible directions. The same goes for the audio system, which just seems far too complicated for something so relatively simple. On top of that, you get below-average sound quality, which means that you’ll probably want to upgrade to something else.
Despite all that, you’ll get plenty of space, which more or less makes up for all the other shortcomings of this cabin. Front seats come with excellent bolstering, which will keep the driver and front passenger intact when making those tight corners. The back seats are not too bad either, providing plenty of leg and headroom even for taller individuals. As for cargo space, if that’s your main concern, then consider getting the hatchback version over the sedan. While the sedan only has 11.3 cubic feet of trunk, the hatch almost 19 cubic feet, which can be expanded up to 44 cubic feet when the rear seats are folded.
However, the main appeal of the 2014 WRX isn’t in its design – outside or inside – but the stuff under the hood. And what you get under the hood is a turbocharged 2.5-litre, horizontally-opposed four-cylinder boxer engine, which can generate 265 horsepower and 244 pound-feet of torque. It’s accompanied by a five-speed manual transmission and an all-wheel-drive system, but automatic transmissions are unfortunately unavailable.
As you can tell, the WRX offers quite a bit of power. It takes the sedan model less than six seconds to accelerate to the 100-kilometre mark, which is very impressive for a car in this price range. However, this power does come at a price. The fuel economy ratings for both the sedan and hatchback are 12.4 litres per 100 kilometres in the city and 9.4 litres per 100 kilometres on the highway. These numbers are rather unimpressive for such a relatively small car, but it is a fair trade-off for the amount of power that you get in return.
Plus, this vehicle drives so smoothly that you’ll ignore any faults its engine may pose. It has excellent traction and can make very impressive transitions. There is some potential for you to understeer due to very front-heavy weight distribution, but braking and using the car’s effective grip.
So, as you might’ve already notice, the 2014 Subaru WRX is all about power and performance. If you’re looking for slick exterior features or a classy cabin, then this car is not for you. However, if the joy of driving is all you’re looking for, then give the WRX a chance.

| Interiors and Special Features: | Interior quality is not the 2014 Subaru WRX's strong suit. The cabin design is simple and straightforward, but there's an overload of cheap, hard plastic trim for a car in this price range. We've not been impressed by the assembly quality of the test cars we've examined, either. The outdated touchscreen interface for the navigation system is frustrating to use, and when equipped, it makes the audio system complicated to operate. The sound quality is subpar as well, making aftermarket audio upgrades a virtual necessity. There is, however, plenty of room inside the cabin for passengers and cargo. Generous head- and legroom provide enough space for taller adults, and the front seats feature aggressive bolstering to keep passengers securely anchored to their seats when cornering. When it comes to hauling stuff, the hatch can accommodate up to 19 cubic feet of cargo while the seats are in place. Folding the rear seats expands that space to a generous 44 cubes.
