Quick Look

The 2014 Ram 3500 is a heavy-duty pickup truck that benefits from some of the most powerful engines a car of this nature can have. But while incredible power output is expected from a truck like that, a stylish interior is not – and the 3500 has an excellent-looking cabin that also offers plenty of space. The 2014 Ram 3500 is a delight in almost every way.

Full Review

Like the 1500 and 2500 models, the 2014 RAM 3500 is a fantastic pickup truck, but it has an intense competition to contend with, which means that despite sporting plenty of impressive features, it will still be “just another truck.” Ram, Ford and GM have all made sure that they stay on the same level, but continuously upgrading the power outputs of their respective products. The result is a collection of pickups that are far too powerful for anyone to care.

All of Ram’s trucks, including the 1500 and 2500 models, come in three cab configurations – 2-door Regular Cab, 4-door Crew Cab and 4-door Mega Cab. When it comes to bed lengths, those vary from six feet and four inches to eight feet, which will depend heavily on the style of the cab. There’s also a choice the read-axle configuration: between two-wheel or heavy-duty four-wheel dually setup. As far as visual distinctions from the other Ram heavy-duty truck go – there aren’t many. The 2500 and 3500 separate themselves from the basic 1500 by having a bigger grille, a much taller hood and huge black or chrome bumpers. Just don’t forget the fact they’re actually huge, which means that they require a lot of space.

On the inside, the 2014 3500 features a very polished and stylish cabin that doesn’t seem to reflect the vehicle’s “working man” nature (that’s so finely displayed on the outside). Heck, even the basic models are something to marvel at, while the higher-trim Laramie variants provide an undeniable sense of luxury, featuring leather-lined and heat-controlled seats, a heated steering wheel, superb materials and many other fine attributes. The centre console is long and deep enough to fit in a whole laptop or even several books, so space shouldn’t be a worry at all. You also get reclining back seats, which allow for additional legroom for passenger at the front and back.

The biggest appeal of modern trucks, however, is located under their hoods. The new Ram 3500 comes with a choice of four engines, two which are V8s and the other two are inline sixes. The 5.7-litre V8 offers 383 horsepower and 400 pound-feet of torque, while the 6.4-litre V8 pumps out 410 horsepower and 428 pound-feet of torque. Those engines can only be combined with a six-speed automatic transmission. The 6.7-litre inline-six turbodiesel produces 350 horsepower and 660 pound-feet of torque when combined with a six-speed manual transmission. If you decide to go for a six-speed automatic, then the engine will give you 370 horsepower and 800 pound-feet of torque. The other 6.7 turbodiesel can pump out the impressive 385 horsepower and 850 pound-feet of torque. The biggest issue with these engines is the fact that they are not very fuel-efficient, but since this is truck, that should be the expected norm.

Overall, the 2014 Ram 3500 is as good a truck as any, so if you’re looking for the ultimate heavy-duty pickup, then you have found it. Without a doubt, the 3500 is a marvellous piece of tech in just about every way, so don’t overlook it!

Power and Performance:

All versions of the 2014 Ram 3500 are available with rear-wheel drive or four-wheel drive. A 5.7-liter V8 engine with 383 hp and 400 lb-ft of torque is standard, and it's matched to a six-speed automatic transmission.

There are two optional engines for the 3500: a 6.4-liter V8 and a 6.7-liter turbocharged, diesel-fueled inline six-cylinder known as the Cummins. The gasoline 6.4-liter V8 produces 410 hp (370 hp on Mega Cabs) and 429 lb-ft of torque and is backed by a six-speed automatic. The Cummins turbodiesel engine comes in three different states of tune. Equipped with the available six-speed manual transmission, it produces 350 hp and 660 lb-ft of torque. You can also get it with one of two different six-speed automatic transmissions: With the standard automatic, it makes 370 hp and 800 lb-ft of torque, while a heavy-duty Aisin automatic enables ratings of 385 hp and 850 lb-ft.

The Cummins comes with a big-rig-like exhaust brake, a useful feature that provides additional stability and braking power when towing very heavy loads.

Depending on body style and rear axle ratio, the Ram 3500 can tow up to 13,850 pounds with the 5.7-liter V8, 16,450 pounds with the 6.4-liter V8, 18,500 with the manual-equipped diesel and 30,000 with the diesel engine and heavy-duty automatic transmission. Properly equipped, the maximum payload for trucks with the 5.7-liter is 4,480 pounds, 7,320 pounds for the 6.4-liter engine and 6,720 pounds for the diesel.

Interiors and Special Features:

Climb into a 2014 Ram heavy-duty pickup and you'll find a very unworkman-like interior. Even base trims seem relatively polished, while upper-crust Laramie models evoke a near-luxury feel with leather-lined and climate-controlled seats, a heated steering wheel, high-quality interior materials – the list goes on. The massive center console is long and deep enough to swallow a larger laptop or multiple tablets; it can even hold a set of hanging files. Reclining rear seats are one of the perks to be had with the Mega Cab, while Crew Cab owners enjoy convenient under-floor storage compartments.

Safety features:

The 2014 RAM 3500 comes with 4-wheel anti-lock disc brakes and four airbags (front and full-length side curtain). It also boasts optional safety features such as parking assist and a rearview camera.

While heavy-duty trucks aren't crash-tested, we expect that you'll be on the safer side of most collisions.
