Negotiate Smarter with the Best Car Buying Tools

The 2014 Nissan Sentra is one of the cheapest premium-style vehicles on the market. Thanks to its slick design, excellent fuel economy and a variety of features, this small sedan is leagues ahead of its rivals. The only snag is its weak 1.8-litre four-cylinder engine, which takes far too long to accelerate.

Last year, Nissan redesigned the Sentra to endow it with premium quality, putting this small sedan on the same level as the more expensive Nissan Altima. The 2014 Nissan Sentra continues down the same path, but with further refinements. The best part, however, is that the Sentra is still very affordable, costing only $14,848. It’s amazing how much a car can deliver for such a low price – though this offering is certainly not without its flaws.

That said, its exterior design is anything but flawed, featuring softly sculpted sheetmetal and slick LED headlight accents and taillights, which allow the Sentra to stand tall above its peers. All models come with chrome-finish grille and door handles as well as body-colour mirrors. The higher trims get alloy wheels, side-mirror-integrated turn signals and fog lights. Finally, the sportier Sentra SR model features a chrome exhaust finisher, rear spoiler and 17-inch alloy wheels. In a nutshell – if Altima and Infiniti had a baby, the 2014 Sentra would be it – since it combines the features of both to a great effect.

On the inside, things aren’t quite as impressive, however. The main reason for that is the fact that Nissan has gone for minimalism and functionality – similar to the Volkswagen Passat – but ended up creating one of the most boring cabins in any compact car. Functionality is one of its greatest aspects, however, since the new Nissan Sentra comes with easy-to-use controls and a very simple, upright layout.

Overall, this cabin doesn’t look too bad – as long as you don’t get too close to it. Its biggest problem is the fact that it just doesn’t look all that detailed. While the trims range from darker matte surfaces to metallic-like plastics, they offer very little in terms of quality. For instance, the metallic trim just looks cheap and thin at the centre stack, while many of the materials don’t match in colour and texture. Basically, this car’s interior is minimalist in all the wrong ways. Good minimalist design should reveal more upon close inspection, not the other way around.

The cabin does redeem itself when it comes to space though, offering plenty of it in the back and at the front. It’s especially spacious at the back – where most sedans, such as the Honda Civic, fail. It also comes with one of the biggest trunks in the compact sedan segment, easily reaching midsize levels.

When it comes to performance and power, the new Nissan Sentra isn’t faring so well. It comes with a very weak 1.8-litre four-cylinder engine that can produce only 130 horsepower and 128 pound-feet of torque. This isn’t nearly enough power to make this car efficient – once you stick more than two adults inside, you’ll have trouble getting it up to highway speeds.

However, because of this lack of power you’ll find that its fuel economy is actually very good. For instance, the models equipped with continuously variable automatic transmission carry the EPA ratings of 6.0 litres per 100 kilometres on the highway and 6.9 litres per 100 kilometres combined. These are some of the best numbers you’ll find in the segment, which makes the new Sentra a very efficient vehicle.

So, if you’re in search of an efficient, affordable and sexy vehicle, then you’ll definitely find in the 2014 Nissan Sentra. It’s one of the best compact sedans on the market, so be sure to take it out for a test drive, if you haven’t already!

Power and Performance:

Every 2014 Nissan Sentra gets a 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine rated at 130 hp and 128 pound-feet of torque. A six-speed manual transmission is standard on the base model, and a continuously variable transmission (CVT) is optional. All other Sentras have the CVT as standard.

The EPA estimates the six-speed manual Sentra will achieve 30 mpg combined (27 mpg city/36 mpg highway). Opting for the CVT ups economy to 34 combined (30 city/39 highway). The FE+ model earns 1 more highway mpg, but the combined figure nets out the same at 34 mpg -- even so, it makes the Sentra one of the most fuel-efficient cars in this class.

In Edmunds testing, a Nissan Sentra SL accelerated from zero to 60 mph in 9.7 seconds, which is slower than average for this class of car.

Interiors and Special Features:

High-quality materials, electroluminescent gauges and a tasteful, contoured design help create what is arguably the finest interior in all of Compactsedanland. The rear-seating area is another inside highlight, offering back-seat drivers more legroom than some of the smaller midsize sedans, along with similarly generous headroom. The theme continues all the way back into one of the category's biggest trunks. The new Sentra is roomy enough, in fact, that it's one of a handful of compact sedans classified as midsize by the EPA.

Safety features:

In safety, the 2014 Sentra is a bit below par when you add up its scores—even though its safety equipment is good and the new design introduced last year allows good outward visibility.

The Sentra achieves top 'good' ratings in most categories from the IIHS (like most cars in its class), but that's the bright side; it gets a worrisome 'poor' rating for small overlap frontal impact. Factor in four-star NHTSA overall ratings and a four-star frontal test from that federal agency and the Sentra becomes a lower-tier performer by the crash-test results.

Standard safety equipment in the Sentra includes front seat-mounted side-impact airbags, as well as roof-mounted side-curtain bags, plus electronic stability control and anti-lock brakes. And moms will be reassured to know that there are two full LATCH connectors in the Sentra's back seat (and three child-seat upper tether anchors).

Also standard is a new Easy Fill Tire Alert system that sounds the horn when you’re inflating the tires to signal the recommended pressure.

A rearview camera system is included with the available navigation system, but you might not need it all that much because the lower beltline and somewhat higher seating position give you a pretty good outward view.

Yet Bluetooth is a feature that we still consider safety-related, and it's only standard on the top SL model—an odd omission from a car that was just redesigned this past year.
