Quick Look

The 2014 Nissan Maxima is essentially the more upscale version of the Nissan Altima, being virtually the same size and offering many similar features. However, this sense of luxury comes for a price – and that price is $38,000. The 3.5-litre V6 engine that can pump out 290 horsepower makes the package sound more appealing though.

Full Review

If you’re looking an enthusiast car, and you think that the 2014 Nissan Maxima is it, then you’d be sorely disappointed in that regard. However, if you’re looking for a semi-enthusiast car with a touch of luxury thrown in for good measure, then that’s exactly what you’ll get here. Basically, this sedan is a more stylish version of the Altima, with a heavier focus on appearance over the actual performance. So, set your priorities straight before taking this one out for a spin.

So, what you get in terms of exterior looks is a mid-size sedan with coupe-like design – or “liquid motion,” as Nissan puts it. Upon closer inspection, you might notice that it shares some features with the Nissan 370Z sport coupe, such as the headlights and taillights. You also get slick rounded-off hood, protruding front fenders and a slopping roof that blends seamlessly with the backside. As a result, when you look at this car’s profile, it seems as it’s continuously moving – made out of liquid.

What about the cabin? The SV versions get premium leather seats as a standard, along with a thick steering wheel. If you go for the higher-trim SV variant, you’ll have a sweet infotainment system that has a seven-inch colour screen as well as stylish dials and buttons that might’ve as well been lifted straight out of the more luxurious Infiniti model. What might surprise you the most is the presence of satisfactory legroom and headroom in the back as well as the ability to fold the back seats flat to expand the cargo area. That said, the back seats don’t have the same kind of strong support as the front seats, so be sure not to take anyone on longer trips with this one.

Under the hood, the 2014 Maxima comes with only one engine – 3.5-litre V6, which can produce 290 horsepower and 261 pound-feet of torque. It can also be combined with only one transmission, which is a continuously variable automatic. As far as fuel is concerned, the recommendation is premium unleaded.

All-in-all, the main reason to get the 2014 Nissan Maxima would be its phenomenal appearance. It’s clear that Nissan hasn’t spent enough time on anything else. But, if you’re looking for the more expensive version of Altima, then give this one a chance. Just be sure to keep its $38,680 price in mind.

Power and Performance:

The 2014 Maxima is marketed as a sport sedan, but we wouldn't quite call it one. However, its 290-horsepower 3.5-liter V-6 engine is a smooth and confident performer, delivering strong, but relaxed power, especially through its automatic continuously-variable transmission (CVT). Just don't expect a race car–this one is more of a highway cruiser.

Overall, the Maxima has one of the sportiest calibrations of any front-drive sedan, and it's reasonably fun to drive, With its sport-tuned suspension, as well as steering and brakes that have been tuned for sportier driving, it has the makings of a solidly performing sporty sedan. Out of a tight corner, if you stomp on the accelerator, a fair amount of torque steer (tugging to the side) serve to remind you that this is a front-wheel-drive sedan running a lot of torque through those wheels. That said, stabilizer bars are included front and back, and a Twin Orifice Steering System helps provide good feedback and control.

Interiors and Special Features:

While the Nissan Maxima's interior design does not look as fresh as that of many of its competitors, it does feel reasonably upscale. Materials quality is outstanding, and especially when loaded with all of the options, the Maxima's cabin comfort rivals that of some Infiniti and Acura models.

The seats are comfortable both in front and in the rear, with support and plenty of room. The Maxima is one of the only non-luxury brand vehicles to offer optional rear bucket seats (part of the Premium package) with a console that effectively limits head count to four but adds a feel of premium exclusivity to the rear seating area.

Safety features:

The 2014 Nissan Maxima comes standard with antilock disc brakes, stability and traction control, front-seat side-impact airbags, side curtain airbags and active front-seat head restraints. A rearview camera is standard on SV models. In Edmunds brake testing, a Maxima SV with the Sport package came to a stop from 60 mph in 122 feet: an average distance for both entry-level luxury cars and family sedans.
