Full Review

The 2014 Mercedes-Benz SLS is the powerful vehicle with all the credentials connected with the three-pointed star emblem. Equipped with Germany’s finest 6.2-liter V8 engine, the lustrous SLS AMG GT model delivers an uncompromising 583 hp and 479 lb/feet of torque. While the SLS AMG Black Series takes it to the next level—perhaps limiting the power to the tracks—with a solid 622 hp and 486 lb/feet of torque.

Mercedes-Benz have created a legacy of beautiful vehicles with class and superiority, and the 2014 SLS is a centre-fold of the catalogue. The two-seater comes in two body styles: the coupe and the soft-top convertible. Although some may consider the gullwing doors a bit extreme and the cockpit a tad snug, the full experience is undeniable exhilarating. The luxurious feel combined with the broad performance brings the New Years Eve excitement to every drive. Count down, brace yourself and go! That is what the bullet-like SLS cries out when the engine roars.

Inside the roadster is an elegant design that offers comfort fit for royalty—or an astronaut. The unconventional gullwing doors offer amble of room upon entry, and then the fitted leather panels cabin wraps around the driver like a pair of moon boots. For taller drivers, the lofty interior would feel a bit more cozy than preferable, but for a roadster of its calibre it is expected. If desired comfort is a top priority, consider the BMW Z4 28i.

The SLS has a wide range of standard features that include many state of the art technology. Keyless ignition/entry, auto-dimming mirrors, blind-spot monitoring system, rear parking sensors, rear view camera, driver memory settings, COMAND electronics interface, Bluetooth integration, voice control navigation system and many more can be found built in. The list for optional features are as extensive and impressive.

The SLS weakness is prominently displayed in its fuel economy. A 15 mpg combined is anything but inspiring, but that is simply a trade off for the power. There are a few roadsters out on the market that can do better in terms of being economically responsible, including the less-thirsty Audi TT

When it comes to safety features, Mercedes-Benz have supplied the standard antilock disc brakes, stability and traction control, side, knee and side curtain airbags and Benz’s very own “mbrace” emergency telematics system. The system automatically notifies when there is a collision, where the vehicle is should it be stolen and enables remote lock/unlock, as well as a few other app-based functionalities.

The 2014 Mercedes-Benz SLS is 95% Superman, 4.9% Clark Kent and 0.1% magic. The supercar is capable of zero to 97 km/h in four seconds. It is a thrill of a ride, but it isn’t built for every driver and definitely shouldn’t be driven on every road. With that being said, it’s nice to see what Mercedes-Benz can do when the manufactures, engineers and designers flex their muscles.
