Full Review

The 2014 Mercedes SL550 is a two-door two-seater roadster with a hardtop convertible roof that offers athletic performance as well as refined styling and details. This car is in its sixth generation after a massive redesign in 2013. The SLs have been around for over 60 years, and this new version is stylistically reminiscent of classic Mercedes two-doors. The SL550 does not come cheap, however. Buyers will be looking into the six-figure range for the roadster, but if a stylish car with a lot of power is appealing, then the SL550 could be the way to go. This car offers an amazing combination of power, refinement, luxury, technology and even fuel economy that only deep pockets will buy.

The Mercedes SL550 has a very unique design that evokes a love-it-or-hate-it attitude. The long hood begins with a vertical front grille that has a mesh-style air intake and a large three-point emblem embedded in it. The LED headlights are a nice touch of luxury to the front end of the car. The hood also has air intakes that are matched on the race-inspired fenders. The back of the SL550 has LED taillights and a chrome-tip diffuser on the dual exhausts to increase performance in sport mode. The recent redesign gave it an all-aluminum body shell that has reduced its weight to just over 4,000 pounds. The lighter weight improves handling, agility and even fuel economy. This sporty roadster has a very distinctive look that screams road presence no matter where you’re driving.

The cabin of the SL550 is built with top-notch materials that scream luxury and sport. The two seats are 12-way active “mulitcontour” power operated with heating, ventilation, memory and massage functions.  The build quality of this car is second to none, and it is quite obvious that in this generation that Mercedes has put effort into building a very luxurious cabin to rival the competition. The additional two inches that were added in both width and length to this car add headroom and shoulder room, ensuring ample space for all passengers, although legroom remains the same. Even if the hardtop roof is not open, the standard glass panel will give the illusion of open space. It would be difficult to find a comparable two-seater with more cabin space than the SL550. The controls in this car are intelligently placed and are easy to use with a large interface to read off of. Soft-touch materials, wood trim and aluminum accents really elevate the luxury in this car. You will definitely be comforted for all of the money spent.

The SL550 Roadster is filled with amazing features and performance capabilities that justify the hefty price tag. The SL550 comes equipped with a powerful Bang & Olufsen 14-speaker surround-sound audio system, which will fill the cabin with amazing sound quality. The Magic Sky Control is another practical feature, which adjusts the transparency of the glass roof panel based on sunlight. Without these features, drivers and passengers can be irritated by bright sunlight pouring through the glass. The Airscarf feature is another aspect of this vehicle that will lengthen the drivability of this car from season to season. The shoulder-height mounted vent blows warm air, essentially wrapping you in a mechanical scarf.

Under the hood of the SL550 roadster is a 4.6-liter turbocharged V8 engine that pumps out 429 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque. A seven-speed automatic transmission and rear-wheel drive are standard, and the vehicle comes equipped with an automatic engine stop-start system. The roadster blasts from 0-97 km/h in just 4.4 seconds and gets a surprisingly good combined fuel rating of 11.7 liters per 100 kilometers.

Overall, the 2014 Mercedes SL550 is at an all-time best in terms of design, performance and luxury. The roadster is sure to put a dent in your bank account, but  it will also put a smile on your face.

Interiors and Special Features:

The SL's interior has long been a standard-bearer for roadster luxury, and this latest iteration doesn't disappoint. Materials quality is exemplary, with nary a compromise to be found, and the attention to detail is remarkable. That this level of craftsmanship coexists with Mercedes-Benz's latest technology, including the SplitView display option with dual driver/passenger displays projected from the same screen, is all the more impressive. The previous-generation SL fell off a bit in terms of cabin construction, but the latest generation's layout could be Mercedes' best all-around effort yet.
