Quick Look

The 2014 Mercedes-Benz S550 is not just any sedan. It may very well be the best sedan in existence. Though it carries a hefty price tag, this vehicle is incredibly versatile, achieving excellency in just about every area. Its comfortable cabin, slick body design and 4.7-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine all work in tandem to realize what is as close to perfection as humanly possible (so far).

Full Review

The 2014 Mercedes-Benz S550 is arguably one of the best sedans to have come out this year – and it’s not that hard to see why. With competitors as fierce as the BMW 750i, Audi A8 and Lexus LS 460, it still manages to come out on top. It may seem arrogant of Mercedes to call the entire S-Call the best car in the world, but once you get your hands on it, you can easily see why it may be worthy of such a high praise. In fact, the 2014 S550 isn’t just the best car in this segment, it’s the best S550 to date. Now let’s explore why, shall we?

Exterior design practically screams luxury the moment you lay your eyes on it. It comes with a swept back that still manages to look tall, while borrowing visual cues from the first-generation CLS. The flowing C-pillar, elongated headlights and connecting crease lines on the sides all contribute to a low-hung, elegant look that doesn’t get in the way of the space in the cabin or trunk. And speaking of that trunk – you get the very generous amount of 16.3 cubic feet. It’s almost as if Mercedes has cast a magical spell over the vehicle to make it defy the laws of physics – in a good way.

On the inside, the S550 is even more luxurious than it is on the outside. Leather and wood come as a standard, which is expected, but the real emphasis is on comfort. The seats are large, adjustable and supportive, being able to accommodate all kinds of passengers. And we’re talking about each and every seat here, not just the front ones. The driver gets not one but TWO 12.3-inch high-definition colour screens, which showcase all the infotainment options, driving information and various system controls. There’s also a nice Panoramic Sunroof, which provides a tremendous view upwards for everyone in the cabin. And let’s not forget about all the LED lights you get in this car, which have greater efficiencies and longer lifetimes. In fact, there are no light bulbs at all here – inside or out.

Under the hood, the new Mercedes-Benz S550 comes with only one powertrain – but it’s a good one. First of all, you can get either a rear-wheel or all-wheel-drive version of the car, both of which come with a 4.7-litre twin-turbocharged V8. It can easily pump out 449 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque, while being combined with a seven-speed automatic transmission. If you’re looking for even more juice, you will need to get another car in the S-Class lineup – the S63 AMG, but it will cost you even more, while its fuel efficiency is decidedly worse.

Overall, the 2014 Mercedes-Benz S550 is a fine automobile that doesn’t just achieve excellence in its own segment, but in general too. The best part is that Mercedes knows what it has created, which is why they are not afraid to flaunt it. So, if you can afford a car that costs $106,600, then definitely give this sedan a priority over any other vehicle in this price range.

Power and Performance:

The 2014 Mercedes-Benz S550 comes with a 4.6-liter turbocharged V8 good for 449 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque. A seven-speed automatic transmission and rear-wheel drive are standard, and 4Matic all-wheel drive is an option. At Edmunds' test track, an S550 sprinted from zero to 60 mph in just 4.9 seconds. That's a bit quicker than its chief rivals, which run in the still quick, mid-to-high 5-second range. EPA-estimated fuel economy is 20 mpg combined (17 city/25 highway).

Interiors and Special Features:

The new S-Class is not about leather and wood, both standard at this level of luxury car, naturally. Rather S-Class is more about the executive dimensions of every seat in the car, the emphasis on comfort, and the massive skyscape offered by the Panoramic Sunroof. For the driver, two 12.3-inch high-resolution color screens display driving information and infotainment along with car-system controls. This new Mercedes sedan is also the king of LED lighting – dramatically longer lifetimes and greater energy efficiencies – with not a single lightbulb used in the entire car, inside or out.
