The brand new 2014 Mercedes-Benz GL350 brings the same beautiful redesigned look from the previous year and looks as good as it drives. Its aggressive off-roading looks on the exterior and its luxurious, leather loaded seven passenger interior are the main reason why this car quickly became a top pick for Canadian families. Once you get behind the wheel of this luxury SUV, you’ll see why it’s truly love at first sight.

There’s a few interesting things about the 2014 Mercedes-Benz GL350, the first being the aggressive, off-road looks, as well as the vehicle’s large size. It also gets great ground clearance. On the inside, the 2014 GL350 is much roomier than what it looks like from the outside of the car. We were afraid that Mercedes was going to create a minivan look-a-like with the seven seats and family hauler idea. However, when you get into the 2014 GL350 you’re just in a plethora of leather and luxury and you realize you’re in the creme of the crop of the SUV world.

One of our favourite features in the 2014 GL350 is the 360-degree view which uses multiple cameras around the car to give  you a bird’s eye view of your vehicle. This feature is especially useful in such a big car when you’re backing out of a parking structure or even preparing to parallel park. It’s a wonderful feature to have in a car this big just to ensure that you and your passengers are as safe as possible. It also comes in useful if you decide to take the car off-roading, it will give you a heads up when you’re coming to close to an edge or any obtrusive objects.

A great safety feature available in the 2014 Mercedes-Benz GL350 is the crosswind assist system. When you encounter a really strong wind gust while driving in your vehicle, this system will use the ABS and other safety features to steer your car back into the correct lane.

Now, when you get behind the wheel of a big luxury SUV, you expect it to be really soft around corners and a little bit dull to drive. With the 2014 Mercedes-Benz GL350, this isn’t the case at all. The steering itself is extremely agile and nicely weighted. Handling is nimble and the aerobatic suspension is extremely comfortable to ride without it being too soft and boring. It’s the perfect balance of the light ride of an SUV and the sporty handling of a luxe sports car.

Mercedes has also improved the room in the third row and has also made it even easier to climb into the back with a one-touch button that automatically folds down the second row seats for easy access. All around, head and legroom is ample, this car is really meant to bring along the entire family. The material is plush and you can even get a panoramic roof that stretches from the front all the way to the back row.

There’s so many wonderful features in the 2014 Mercedes-Benz GL350 that it’s too hard to name them all off. Find out for yourself and request a free quote from one of our trusted dealers to set up an appointment for a test drive.

Power and Performance:

The base version, in terms of pricing, is the 2014 GL 350 BlueTEC, the turbodiesel edition that gets the best fuel economy of the entire lineup. The 3.0-liter turbodiesel is rated at just 240 horsepower, but brutish diesel torque of 455 pound-feet twists its way through the GL's standard paddle-shifted seven-speed automatic and all-wheel-drive system for a 0-60 mph time estimated at 8.3 seconds. There's some turbo lag, and the diesel's powerband is pretty narrow, and try as we could on our drive through scenic New Mexico, we couldn't press it harder than 175 km/h. But the diesel's fuel economy is estimated as high as 9.8 L/100km highway--one of the reasons the smooth, strong powerplant still makes this version one of our favorite big SUVs of all.

From the 2014 lineup, the turbodiesel's one of the GLs we recommend most often, primarily because it's the only one to break the 11.76 L/100km combined barrier. The GL 350 BlueTEC is rated at 13.07 L/100km in the city and 9.8 L/100km on the highway. It's improved over the prior generation of BlueTEC GLs, and like most diesel vehicles, we've found it easier to come nearer to those figures than with competitive hybrid vehicles.

Interiors and Special Features:

Big station wagons used to be the ultimate road trip vehicles for American families, but the seven-passenger 2014 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class just might be the current luxury family vehicle champ. Unlike many three-row crossovers, the GL has a truly full-size third row, so no matter who's sitting back there, chances are they'll fit with room to spare. Moreover, the available power-entry second-row seats make third-row access incredibly easy by crossover standards (minivans still reign supreme, of course). The GL also offers seemingly endless comfort and convenience features to keep passengers comfortable, including heated seats, a dual-screen entertainment system and a panoramic sunroof. As for the people in front, they're treated to comfortable, supportive seats that only get better with the available multicontour design and massage functions.

Materials quality is excellent in the GL's cabin, with supple, tight-fitting panels everywhere you look. The many technology features start with Mercedes' excellent COMAND system, which consists of a central color screen, dashboard buttons, steering wheel controls and a multifunction knob on the center console. It can seem a little intimidating at first, but COMAND is one of the best interfaces on the market, enabling both simple and more complex tasks to be executed with ease.

Even with all three rows occupied, there are still 16 cubic feet of cargo space left behind the third row, which is about the size of a midsize sedan's trunk. With both the second- and third-row seats lowered, the GL can carry up to 93.8 cubic feet of cargo, a fairly generous amount for this segment.

Safety features:

The 2014 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class comes standard with antilock brakes, stability control and traction control, active front head restraints, front and rear side airbags, full-length side curtain airbags, a driver knee airbag and a driver attention/drowsiness monitor. The mbrace2 communications system includes automatic collision notification, an SOS button, stolen vehicle location, geo-fencing, alarm notification and remote door lock/unlock.

The GL offers two levels of optional blind-spot and lane-departure protection. The first level comes via the Lane Tracking package (optional on GL350 and GL450), which monitors blind spots and lane drifting and alerts the driver by vibrating the wheel or emitting a beep. The second level is found in the optional Driver Assistance package (standard on GL63), which adds "active" versions of these systems that can apply the brakes if the driver fails to heed the car's warnings.

In Edmunds brake testing, all non-AMG GL-Class models came to a stop from 60 mph in around 115 feet, an exceptionally short distance for such a heavy vehicle with all-season tires.
