Quick Look

The 2014 Mercedes-Benz G550 is a rugged, boxy and hopelessly outdated SUV that somehow manages to be cool even in this day and age. Its 5.5-litre V8 engine, which produces 382 horsepower and 391 pound-feet of torque, is particularly impressive as is its ability to traverse uneven surfaces. The only problem here is that this vehicle may not appeal to everyone, but it’s okay – because there are enough people who buy the look.

Full Review

The 2014 Mercedes-Benz G550 is a boxy, bold and completely outdated SUV that somehow still manages to be awesome. One of its key attractions is that it’s a typical – or rather traditional SUV – which means that it’s all lines and absolutely no curves. The story of the G-Class SUV goes something like this – it was designed sometime in the 1970's for the Shah of Iran's military (hence the hard-edged look), but since then, it hasn’t changed much at all. All it throughout the last 30 or so year is meet safety regulations and current luxury technology standards. Other than, it’s exactly the same car.

If you want to get an idea of how hopelessly outdated the car is, just look at the modern Range Rovers since even they have “curved” their lines over the years – they are still rather boxy. However, the latest Mercedes-Benz G550 is a league of its own – it’s boxy and upright, but not aerodynamic in the lightest. That said, its design is absolutely pragmatic as it allows for plenty of interior space. With a length of 184.5 inches, the G550 is in fact shorter than the Mercedes M-Class SUV, but somehow it feels larger anyway. Last year, it received a few updates such as LED daytime running lights, electrically folding mirrors and a new grille for the AMG version (which the G550 isn’t). Generally speaking, you either like the macho shape or you don’t. If it detracts you, we won’t try to change your mind – because it does indeed look out of place these days. However, if you like this sort of thing, then you’ll love this look. We promise!

On the inside, however, the G550 is a completely different beast. Everything here is handcrafted and covered in premium leather – from the lavish dash to the comfortable seats. Polished wood and chrome accents dominate everything else. The controls on the dash and every else are a very good mix of pragmatism and elegant design, which include 7-inch tablet-like command screen. The boxy shape predictably allows for nearly unlimited headroom, though taller passenger might want more legroom. The cargo area is not surprisingly also huge of over 45 cubic feet behind the second-row seats and nearly 80 if you decide to fold them.

Under the hood, the 2014 G550 comes with a 5.5-litre V8 engine, which produces 382 horsepower and 391 pound-feet of torque. It can only be combined with a seven-speed automatic transmission, which transmits power to all four wheels, using a full-time four-wheel-drive system. You’ll also find that it has a limited-slip back differential and locking front, centre and rear differentials for off-road use, if you need that sort of thing. Basically, this SUV is as practical as vehicles get, so its internal strength is what it’s all about.

The 2014 Mercedes-Benz G550 is not exactly a “beauty” in the traditional sense, but it has its appeal. If you understand what I’m talking about when I say it’s macho and you like the sound of that, then give it a look. If not, then maybe you have a friend who would like to use it instead.

Power and Performance:

The G550 sports Mercedes' widely used, smoothly stalwart 388-horsepower V-8 engine with 391 pound-feet of torque, coupled to a seven-speed automatic with a high degree of manual gear control. It's a well-sorted drivetrain, smooth in highway driving and docile until it's not. In the 5,600-pound G550, the normally aspirated V-8 and automatic combine for acceleration to 60 mph of 6.0 seconds; it'll reach a limited top speed of 130 mph, but it struggles to achieve a 12/15 mpg fuel economy rating

Interiors and Special Features:

Though brutish on the outside, the G-Class's interior is another story. This is still a Mercedes, after all, and a 6-figure one at that. Its cabin is almost entirely handcrafted and features premium leather that covers the seats and dash. Polished wood and chrome accents abound. Controls are a fine mix of utilitarian (the three prominent locking-differential buttons displayed front and center) and elegant (a crisp, 7-inch tablet-style command screen). The G's squared shape means headroom is practically unlimited, but taller occupants may wish for more legroom. Cargo capacity is generous: over 45 cubic feet behind the 2nd-row seats and nearly 80 with them folded.
