Negotiate Smarter with the Best Car Buying Tools

The 2014 Mercedes-Benz is the most affordable E-Class model available, but that doesn’t make it a bad car – not by a long shot. With a fantastic engine, slick exterior design and a comfortable cabin, this luxury vehicle is more than worth the price of $62,000.

The 2014 Mercedes-Benz E350 reminds exactly why the E-Class is such a delightful vehicle lineup. Available as either a sedan, coupe, wagon or convertible, this luxury car comes with a redesigned body, an improved cabin and a fantastic engine. The last year’s model hardly needed any upgrading to begin with, but that’s what we got anyway – and it’s a better car for it.

With new sharp-edged creases, four-lamp LED headlights and tighter forehead, the body of the 2014 E350 is undoubtedly a feast for the eyes. The new design is certainly not risky, but it is alluring, which is all that should matter anyone. Plus, it’s still easily recognizable as a Mercedes family car, especially the Sport version, which comes with a huge Mercedes-Benz badge on the grille.

On the inside, the Mercedes-Benz E350 comes with ridiculously comfortable seats, which offer plenty of headroom and awesome ergonomics. Wood trim is available as a standard on most models, but sadly leather is not. That said, you get the artificial MB-Tex material, which makes for a very decent alternative.

The cabin also provides upgraded dash materials and curvier design, which makes it noticeably better than its previous incarnation. However, if you’re looking for interior design that’s a little more in-your-face in the segment, then you might be better off with a Cadillac or Lexus.

The Mercedes-Benz E-Class offers a choice of six engines, but the E350 variant comes with only one, which is 3.5-litre V6. The engine can produce up to 302 horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque. When combined with a seven-speed automatic transmission, this powertrain can deliver quite a bit of juice. It takes less than seven seconds for the car to accelerate to the 100-km/h mark, which is a very decent number for a car like this.

The 2014 Mercedes-Benz E350 may not be the most luxurious car in the E-Class lineup, but it’s certainly one of the cheapest ones. And considering that it costs $62,000, it’s likely to be the E-Class model most car buyers would settle for. So, definitely give it a look if you have what it takes to purchase it.

Power and Performance:

We'll start with the gentler manners of the standard E350. At times, it can feel distantly related to the hot E63 AMG, but it's the E-Class most drivers will order and own. It's powered by a combination of the Mercedes 3.5-liter V-6 and seven-speed automatic with paddle controls. The direct-injected V-6 spins out 302 horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque, with smooth power delivery and a relatively wide powerband.  Zero to 60 mph times are well under 7 seconds, and top speed's 130 mph.

These models come standard with a seven-speed automatic transmission with paddle shift controls. They're not the most responsive automatics we've driven, better than some of the six-speeds in the luxury world, but not quite to the smooth par set by the eight-speed automatic in many other luxury models.

Interiors and Special Features:

The cabin of the 2014 Mercedes-Benz E350 looks almost identical to its predecessor at first glance, but there are meaningful changes here. A revised "three-tube" gauge cluster adds visual interest, while the gear selector on two-door models has been moved from the center console to the steering column, leaving the E63 AMG as the only trim level with a shifter between the seats. A new Mercedes-brand analog clock adds a touch of class to every E-Class dashboard. The three available wood veneers range from warm to austere -- a nice no-cost opportunity to personalize your Benz.

All E-Class models come with the COMAND electronics interface, which combines a large display screen, a control knob and dash-mounted buttons. As with every knob-based infotainment system, there's a learning curve, but we generally prefer COMAND to rival systems due to its relatively simple menu structure. Its voice command functionality is also first-rate.

Each E-Class is relatively comfortable and spacious by segment standards. The seats are firm, but offer impressive comfort and support for the long haul -- especially the optional multicontour driver seat. The two-door and AMG models feature snug front sport seats that capably hold you in place during aggressive driving. The backseat in four-door models is pleasantly spacious, matching the BMW 5 Series for most hospitable in the midsize luxury class. Two-door E-Classes lose a lot of rear passenger space, but you can still squeeze two adults back there without too much hassle.

The sedan's trunk measures an average-plus 15.9 cubic feet, while the wagon offers up to 57.4 cubic feet of maximum cargo volume in addition to its trademark rear-facing (and strictly-for-kids) third-row seat that gives it seven-passenger capacity in a pinch. The coupe drops to a still-commendable 13.3 cubic feet, and the convertible brings up the rear at 11.5 cubic feet (8.8 with the top down).

Safety features:

The 2014 Mercedes-Benz E350 also expanded its optional safety systems, under the catchall of "Intelligent Drive." A new stereo camera delivers three-dimensional views 50 meters beyond the car and 500 meters in total. That allows a Volvo-esque pedestrian detection system that can brake autonomously at up to 45 mph and can entirely avoid hitting those on foot at up to 31 mph. Active lane keeping applies the brakes to center the car if you veer toward oncoming traffic, using camera and radar to track approaching cars. Activate Distronic cruise control, and this Benz will steer itself through highway bends, guided by both lane markings and the car ahead - yet it will sense and warn a driver who's tempted to let go of the wheel. Junction Assist boosts brake pressure or stops the car automatically when vehicles or pedestrians cross the path.

Like Nissan's system, the E-class's cameras project a 360-degree, bird's-eye view on its central screen, and Mercedes mimics Ford with an optional hands-free access feature that lets you open the trunk by waving a foot below the bumper.
