Quick Look

The 2014 Mercedes-Benz E250 is not the most luxurious option in the E-Class lineup, but it’s still a fantastic vehicle. It exceeds one’s expectations in just about every single aspect, including comfort, style and performance. Even its “weak” 2.1-litre turbocharged diesel four-cylinder engine is a treat, being able to produce 195 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque.

Full Review

The 2014 Mercedes-Benz E250 may not be the top vehicle in the E-Class lineup, but it’s still a fine automobile. It’s a luxury-car benchmark that showcases exemplary results in every single area, offering a fine cabin, beautiful body design and a solid engine. So, if you’re looking for luxury, but don’t want to pay a few thousand less than the $62,000 price for the E350, the price on this one is $57,800, which means that it may just be up your alley.

The E250 has dropped its sharp-edged creases this year, while gaining new four-lamp LED headlights, which take on a very aggressive shape in the Sport version with a large Mercedes-Benz emblem on the grille. The E250 is not a huge risk-taker design-wise, but buyers who are searching for an easily identifiable yet toned-down member of the Mercedes lineup, this luxury sedan delivers enough attractive styling cues to make up for its otherwise rather sloppy visual presence. Two-door coupe and convertible models are approximately seven inches shorter than the sedans.

The interior of the 2014 E250 comes with a set of incredibly comfortable seats along with plenty of headroom and accommodating ergonomics. Wood trim is standard on most models, but real leather isn't for some strange reason. That said, the synthetic MB-Tex material works as a fine alternative. Upgraded dash materials and slightly restyled interior lines make the cabin feel more impressive than in its predecessor, but it's still a bit on the conventional side when compared to the showier Cadillac and Lexus alternatives.

Under the hood, the new Mercedes-Benz E250 comes with a 2.1-litre turbocharged diesel four-cylinder, which can produce 195 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque. Just like the rest of the E-Class models, the E250 is equipped with a seven-speed automatic gearbox, so there don’t expect a manual transmission. For that, you will need the E63 AMG model.

However, despite being on the lowest end of the E-Class food chain, the 2014 Mercedes-Benz E250 is still a fantastic vehicle, offering many of the same features as its higher-end cousins. Because of that, its $57,800 price tag is more than justifiable.

Power and Performance:

With 195 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque, as well as available 4Matic, the E250 Bluetec sedan is very satisfying and engaging, though, with a light, responsive feel at most speeds (because there's less weight at the nose than with the previous E350 Bluetec). Only from a standing start or when ordering up a quick pass after trundling along does the diesel hesitate for just a moment more than the gasoline version.

Interiors and Special Features:

The 2014 Mercedes-Benz E-Class interior offers profoundly comfortable seats, plenty of headroom and accommodating ergonomics all around. While wood trim is standard on most models, real leather isn't – a surprising omission. At least the synthetic MB-Tex material plays a convincing stand-in. Upgraded dash materials and subtly restyled interior curves make the cabin of the E-Class feel a noticeable step above its predecessor, though it's still a bit on the conservative side when compared to the flashier Cadillac and Lexus alternatives. A pair of small bucket seats in coupe and convertible models limits seating to four instead of the five in sedan models and seven in wagons utilizing the rear-facing third-row seat.

Safety features:

The E-Class comes standard with antilock disc brakes, stability control, front and front-side airbags, front pelvic airbags, side curtain airbags and a driver knee airbag. Rear airbags are a stand-alone option.

The 2014 E-Class also introduces the next generation of Mercedes safety technologies, including a revised driver-drowsiness monitor, front and rear collision-mitigation systems and an updated Driver Assistance package with adaptive cruise control and a "Steering Assist" feature that uses a stereoscopic camera to help keep you in your lane.

Also included is the mbrace telematics system, offering smartphone integration and Web-based apps that include remote controls, driver monitoring and emergency services. The Cabriolet additionally features automatic rollover hoops. All models are available with both a surround-view camera and an automated parking system.
