Despite being the cheapest in the C-Class family, the 2014 Mercedes-Benz C250 is a fantastic car that offers excellent fuel economy, a spacious cabin and a plethora of safety features. Its 1.8-litre four-cylinder engine provides a very decent power output too, being able to accelerate to 100km/h in just seven seconds.



The 2014 Mercedes-Benz C250 brings about a slight re-design to the C-Class line that makes it look even more modern than before. Available as either a sedan or coupe, this C250 offers excellent performance, shrewd design and high-tier safety standards. But then again – could we really expect anything less from Mercedes? Also, be aware that the C250 is the cheapest model in the C-Class line, which means that it’s the least powerful and has the smallest amount of features.

While most of the changes that you’ll find in this vehicle are under the hood, there are some noticeable additions to the body as well. The front grille now has black painted slats to give a touch more class. Mercedes has given the car a lighter aluminum hood and redesigned its front, rear bumper, headlights and taillights. Despite these changes, it has retained the angular look it’s become known for. What’s most surprising about the 2014 C250 is that the coupe variant is almost the same in wheelbase, width and length as the sedan, despite having two doors less. That said, it’s actually lower in height, which endows it with a more athletic feel.

Step inside and you will find a minimalistic and elegant cabin that offers plenty of features without being over-the-top. Right in front of the driver is a 4.5-inch colour display that provides navigation, audio and trip information. The front seats are comfortable and spacious, offering excellent support and adjustability. However, the back seats are a bit tight in the five-passenger sedan model, and they’re even worse in the coupe. The coupe can only fit in four passengers (in theory) and has a much lower roofline, so the back seats are completely useless here. Like in many similar cars, such as Infiniti Q50 and BMW328i, functions like audio, navigation and phone are controlled through a console dial and viewed on a colour LCD screen in the centre dash.

The biggest upgrade from last year is under this car’s hood. The 2014 250C comes with a 1.8-litre turbocharged four-cylinder that can pump out 201 horsepower and 229 pound-feet of torque. It takes just a little over seven seconds to accelerate to the 100-km/h mark, which is a very good achievement for a lower-trim model. The fuel economy is not too bad either since it carries EPA ratings of 10.7 litres per 100 kilometres in the city and 7.6 litres per 100 kilometres on the highway. So, if you can’t afford a higher-trim Mercedes-Benz C-Class, don’t feel bad about getting this one – it’s good too.

Another highlight of this Mercedes-Benz is its safety equipment. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has rewarded it with top “good” results in all crash tests, while the federal government has given it five out of five stars overall. The safety features include eleven airbags, active head restraints, stability and traction control, adaptive brakes, rain-sensing wipers as well as Attention Assist, which checks your alertness.

At the end of the day, the 2014 Mercedes-Benz C250 is a fantastic car, despite being at the bottom of the “food chain” in the C-Class family. It may cost $37,350, but it’s worth every penny – trust us.

With the base 2014 Mercedes-Benz C 250 models you get a turbo-charged, direct-injected 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine, rated at 201 horsepower and 229 pound-feet of torque. This engine is fuel-efficient and fun, and it actually feels quicker than the previous V-6 C 300 (its official 7.1 seconds to 60 mph is the same). The C250 is available only in rear-wheel drive, with a seven-speed automatic transmission changing gears.

Interiors and Special Features:

Just tugging on the C-Class's door handle makes you feel as if you've cracked open an impenetrable vault. This model's interior is well crafted, and boasts precise switchgear and an eye-pleasing design. The controls are straightforward, and Mercedes' COMAND electronics interface is our favorite from a luxury automaker, as it's the easiest to use. The iPod interface is particularly user-friendly and quick to respond.

Though the sedan is bigger than previous editions of the C-Class, it's hardly the best choice for growing families. Some might find a child seat difficult to install in the narrow, bucketlike rear seat positions, and the 12.4-cubic-foot trunk is on the small side.

As for the coupe, it shouldn't come as a surprise that its backseat is quite cramped. Legroom is about par for the segment (squished), while headroom is nonexistent for those taller than about 5-foot-8. In total, the C-Class coupe is no worse than an A5 and better than a Cadillac CTS coupe. Its trunk volume of 11.7 cubic feet is average for the small luxury coupe class.

Safety features:

Safety features include adaptive high-beam, attention, blind spot and lane-keeping assist features, which warn the driver through vibrations in the steering wheel.

The C-Class was most recently crash-tested in the 2013 model year by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety and received a superior front-crash prevention rating while earning Top Safety Pick status.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration awarded the 2013 four out of five stars in frontal crash testing, five out of five stars in side crash and four out of five stars in rollover, for an overall rating of five out of five stars.

As 2014 model C-Classes are essentially carryovers from the 2013 model year, it is safe to say 2013 crash ratings can be applied to the 2014 model.
