Negotiate Smarter with the Best Car Buying Tools

The 2014 Mazda Mazda2 is certainly not the best car out there – not even in its segment – but its exterior design and handling are top-notch. Admittedly, there are plenty of flaws here, like the lack of special features, a somewhat small cabin and a couple of others. However, those who are looking for a simple and fuel-efficient car will find much to like about it.

The 2014 Mazda Mazda2 is definitely one of the more fun subcompacts to drive, but it’s definitely not meant for everyone. It offers a decent performance and aesthetically pleasing exterior. However, there are issues that will detract certain car buyers – like a less than comfortable cabin and lack of variety when it comes to special features.

On the outside, the 2014 Mazda2 is definitely not the most outrageously good-looking car out there, but it is still nice to look at. It has that teardrop shape and Mazda’s trademark curves, while sporting large fender flares and “rising” profile. The front-door side windows look simple and carefree, providing excellent visibility. Combined with Mazda’s smiling grille that also graces Mazda3’s face, this hatchback is just a notch above generic, which allows it stand out from the crowd without being controversial.

One thing that might annoy some drivers is the lack of special features. The entry level Sport trim may come with 15-inch steel wheels, while the Touring one carries 15-inch alloys, there’s not much else of note here. Sure, the Touring has things like front fog lights, a roof spoiler and a chrome exhaust tip, but the standard trim gets none of that.

On the inside, things don’t get that much better in terms of features since the cabin surprisingly empty. You can get a six-speaker audio system, improved cloth upholstery in the Touring trim and leather-wrapped steering wheel with built-in audio controls. But just like on the outside, none of these features come as a standard.

What will impress you about the cabin, however, is how comfortable and roomy it is. The front seats offer plenty of headroom and legroom, while also providing superb adjustability and support. The back seats are slightly less spacious though, featuring very awkwardly-placed head restraints. The cargo area is only 13.3 cubic feet large, which is not bad for a hatchback, but competitors like Honda Fit and Nissan Versa offer more. If you fold the back seats, you can expand the space to 27 cubic feet, but that’s not much either.

Under the hood, the 2014 Mazda2 comes with only one engine – 1.5-litre four-cylinder, which can produce up to 100 horsepower and 98 pound-feet of torque. You can pair it either with a four-speed automatic transmission or a five-speed manual one. This may sound like an awful configuration, but thanks to the car’s light curb weight, which is just a few pounds over 2300, Mazda2 feels agile and responsive. You also get very decent fuel economy on this one due to low power output and lighter weight.

Overall, the 2014 Mazda Mazda2 can rub some people the wrong way. It’s not as spacious as its rivals and it’s not exactly feature-rich. But if you feel attracted by its exterior design and you’re looking for decent fuel efficiency, then this hatchback is definitely worth checking out.

Power and Performance:

If it sounds as though the 2014 Mazda 2 is underpowered, with a 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine putting out just 100 horsepower and 98 lb-ft of torque, let's say it's not the single fastest subcompact on the market. But if you're willing to rev the engine above 3000 rpm--its peak power and torque comes fairly far up the rev range for a modern small-car engine--you can have a great deal of driving fun. This car may be the perfect example of the notion that it's more fun to drive an underpowered car hard than a powerful car gently.

Make sure you get the five-speed manual gearbox, though, and be prepared to use it to keep the car moving expeditiously as the engine revs. While Mazda offers an optional four-speed automatic transmission, its ratios are widely spaced and tends to shift far too early to keep the car hustling along. It also lacks any kind of manual-shift mode.

But it's the roadholding and sporty driving character of the Mazda 2 that will make any driver forget that the car is actually a somewhat tall five-door hatchback. It drives lower and wider than it is, and the suspension tuning and chassis overall are superbly balanced. The handling is firm, but well-damped, and the feel from the electric power steering is as good as anyone's. There's an element of hot-hatch-in-civilian-clothes to the littlest Mazda, and we'd wager a skilled driver could catch a lot of base MINI Cooper owners unaware.

The compact dimensions and nimble handling make the Mazda 2 useful for nipping around crowded city streets too. There's lots of grip despite the narrow 195/50 tires, and it's at its best at lower speeds, before the engine starts to run out of power when you reach highway velocity. Gear-shifting is natural in cities, but you'll find yourself doing it a lot at highway speeds to keep up with traffic when the engine can't quite cope with hills or sudden acceleration. That's when the engine gets noisy too.

Interiors and Special Features:

For such a small car, the 2014 Mazda2 hatchback's interior is refreshingly large and airy. The dash design, with its orange backlighting and a circular center-control motif, recalls Mazda's design past, but we like the look and it definitely works here. The Mazda2's front bucket seats are great, but the back seat is a little cramped and the head restraints awkwardly positioned. The hatchback's cargo area isn't as generous as that of the Nissan Versa or Honda Fit. Folding down the 60/40-split rear seat increases cargo volume from 13.3 cubic feet to just over 27.

Safety features:

Standard safety features for the 2014 Mazda 2 include antilock brakes (discs in front, drums in rear), front-seat side airbags, side curtain airbags and stability and traction control.

In Insurance Institute for Highway Safety crash tests, the Mazda 2 received the highest possible rating (out of four) of "Good" in the moderate-overlap frontal offset and roof strength tests. In the side impact test, it scored a second-highest "Acceptable." In that agency's small-overlap frontal offset test, the 2 scored a second-lowest "Marginal" rating. The 2's seat/head restraint design was rated "Acceptable" for whiplash protection in rear impacts.

In Edmunds brake testing, the 2 came to a stop from 60 mph in 129 feet, one of the longer distances in its class.
