Quick Look

The 2014 Land Rover LR2 is definitely one of the more versatile mid-size crossovers out there. It fits just fine in urban and off-road settings, which should in theory make it appealing to various types of individuals. With a solid 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine, cute body design and a plethora of features, this car is worth at least a look.

Full Review

The 2014 Land Rover LR2 feels just as comfortable in crowded urban areas as it does on muddy fields. It’s the kind of car that you can drive almost everywhere, but it’s probably suited for off-roading a little more. It’s here to meet the growing demand for mid-size crossovers, and for the most part, it achieves that admirably. It’s actually even more off-road-ready than the Range Rover Evoque, but it’s yet to reach the level of “ruggedness” that the bigger Land Rover LR4 has.

On the outside, the car looks almost exactly the same as last year, but with a few LEDs tossed in for good measure. While sticking to the same design for a few years is not always a bad move, sometimes it just doesn’t cut it – and that’s what we have here. Simply put, the 2014 LR2 looks dated, especially when you compare it to other cars in the segment or even the ones from this very manufacturer, such as the Evoque and Range Rover Sport. That said, the HSE and HSE LUX variants do carry silver grille bars and a back finisher strip, which add a certain level of modernity. Other than that, the LR2 could use a few upgrades.

On the inside, however, things are much, much better. There’s the new dash, which carries itself with a definite sense of elegance and style. It’s also not as messy, while the materials are what you’d expect from a car in the price range. This means that you should expect a few cheap plastics in places, but not too many of them. You’ll also find a new touchscreen here, which comes with your typical QWERTY keyboard and improved interactivity. And since this is an SUV, then looking at it internal space is paramount. Luckily, the LR2 delivers plenty of that, including in its cargo area, which is 59 cubic feet large if you fold the back seats. This is a good number since few vehicles in its class offer this much space.

Under the hood, the new Land Rover LR2 offers only one engine, but it’s a good one. The 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder can pump out 240 horsepower and 250 pound-feet of torque. It’s the same EcoBoost engine as the one you’d find in the Evoque. Last year, the LR2 had a 3.2-litre inline-six, so this new engine is a definite improvement. What remains the same is the six-speed automatic transmission, which now also features Land Rover’s Intelligent power System Management. The engine can accelerate to the 100-km/h mark in about eight seconds, while also offering a significantly better fuel economy.

Overall, the 2014 Land Rover LR2 is not a huge improvement over the last year’s offering, so if didn’t like that one, then there’s nothing to change your mind here. However, if you’ve been eyeing the LR2’s for quite some time now, then getting this model should be a no-brainer since it’s exactly the same car as before, only slightly better.

Interiors and Special Features:

Last year's upgrade to the dash has definitely paid dividends. The new dash is far more elegant and less cluttered than the old one, and the materials are mostly in line with the class, with a few cheap-looking plastics here and there. The new touch screen is designed to provide a more user-friendly experience, including improved scrolling and a QWERTY keyboard. On a more pragmatic front, the Land Rover LR2 can carry up to 59 cubic feet of cargo with the rear seats folded, which is on par with or better than other vehicles in the category.

The 2014 Land Rover LR2's list of standard safety features includes antilock brakes with brake assist, traction and stability control, hill-descent control, front-seat side airbags, full-length side curtain airbags and a driver knee airbag.
