Quick Look

The 2014 Kia Optima Hybrid may not be as iconic or fuel-efficient as the Toyota Prius, but it’s still a vehicle worth considering. The 2.4-litre hybrid four-cylinder engine packs beneath its hood packs quite a punch, offering more power than most hybrid powertrains in this price range. But, the biggest appeal of this sedan is its exterior design, which benefits from excellent attention to details and aerodynamic features.

Full Review

Despite looking almost the same as the older models, the 2014 Kia Optima Hybrid is a small but effective vehicle that still manages to stand out among other mid-size sedans in this segment. In terms of looks it competes with the likes of the Mazda6 and Ford Fusion. However, in terms of performance, its direct competitor is the Toyota Prius. Unlike the iconic Prius, the Optima is not a dedicated hybrid, but it still puts up a very decent fight.

On the outside, the new Kia Optima looks almost as if it came from the future, resembling lightning fast vehicles from movies like Tron and the like. Some of the notable visual features include a cross-hatch front grille and headlight housing that rises directly from the grille, almost like Nike’s swoosh. The SX-T trim also comes with red brake calipers, which make it seem as if the car is in a continuous state of motion. Overall, its sense of luxury and devotion to high performance make it seem like a high-priced vehicle since even the base trims come with heated side mirrors, 16-inch wheels and chrome door-handle inserts. However, in truth, it’s nothing but a humble family sedan.

The interior design is just as slick and pretty as it is on the outside. The higher-end EX and SX trims in particular are very impressive, offering luxurious features like a dual-panel moonroof, cooling and heating front seats, a voice-activated navigation, heated back seats and an infotainment system similar to Ford’s SYNC. However, there are a few issues with this sedan’s interior, which include low-quality and decidedly unattractive plastics, which are nowhere near as good as those in the Honda, Mazda, GM and Ford cars. Also, because of the 2014 Optima’s sloping roofline, the back seats aren’t as comfortable as they should be due to the lack of proper headroom for taller people. Other than that, the cabin is as good as it should be.

The more important aspect of this car should be its powertrain, which is a 2.4-litre hybrid four-cylinder combined with an electric motor. The four-cylinder can generate up to 166 horsepower and 154 pound-feet of torque. The electric motor on the other hand can generate only 40 horsepower and 152 pound-feet of torque. The only transmission on offer here is a six-speed automatic, which Kia has retuned for a better performance. The best aspect of this engine, however, is its fuel economy, carrying the EPA ratings of 8.1 litres per 100 kilometres in the city and 7.1 litres per 100 kilometres on the highway. That said, Prius is better in this regard, so take that into consideration.

At the end of the day, the 2014 Kia Optima Hybrid is a peculiar alternative to the Toyota Prius, but it’s not nearly as fuel-efficient as it should be. However, if you’re looking for a definitive hybrid, then we still recommend the Prius – or even the C-Max Hybrid from Ford. That said, the new Optimas offer excellent design and plenty of features, so definitely give this hybrid a consideration just because of those.

Power and Performance:

The Optima Hybrid, with its electric-motor system and lithium-polymer battery pack that pair with a four-cylinder engine and six-speed automatic transmission (not a CVT), has been retuned for better drivability. It now has a higher-capacity lithium-ion battery, with the powertrain providing 199 hp of combined power and 235 lb-ft of combined torque, to yield acceleration that feels about on par with the base four but with better mileage (36 mpg city, 40 highway).

In past model years, we've found the Optima's steering to be a little on the firm side in feel compared to many other models in this class. With a rather firmly tuned suspension and reasonably good body control, the Optima has a lean, confident feel on a curvy road.

With the new Drive Select system that's included in the SC model, you get several modes that command different transmission shift points and steering weighting.

Interiors and Special Features:

On upper-end EX and SX trims, customers can opt for such extravagant features as a dual-panel moonroof, heated and cooling front seats, heated rear seats and a voice-activated navigation and infotainment system similar to Ford's SYNC. While we love the look of the 2014 Kia Optima sedan's interior, some of the plastic on the dash and steering wheel still lack the quality look and feel found in Honda, Mazda and even some GM and Ford products. The front seats are pretty comfortable for tall folks, but the Optima's sharply raked rear roofline may cause some headroom issues for the rear-seat passengers.

Safety features:

Standard safety equipment on all Optimas includes front side-impact airbags, front and rear side-curtain airbags and electronic traction and stability control.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration gives the 2014 Kia Optima five out of five stars in its front-end, side-impact and rollover tests. The independent Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) also gives the Optima top marks in every category except the small overlap crash test, which it scored as Acceptable. IIHS named the Kia Optima as a Top Safety Pick.
