The 2014 Jeep Patriot is the younger sibling of the Jeep Compass. Mechanically, they’re pretty much identical. However, the 2014 Jeep Patriot has a lower starting point in terms of the price. This family SUV comes with a satisfactory amount of standard features and offers an enjoyable ride for you and the little ones. Some aspects of the car definitely need a bit of an update, but despite this it’s a great car to get around in and have some fun with.
The 2014 Jeep Patriot Limited is the top trim level of the vehicle costs just about $28,000. For that price, you get this fairly high quality leather interior seating, heated seats, the older U-Connect system, but this year’s big addition concerns itself with the addition of the all-new 6-speed power-tech automatic transmission.
The 2014 Patriot Limited runs with the larger of the two engines available. The 2.4-litre engine has Dual Variable Valve Timing intelligence and offers 172 horsepower and 165 pound-feet of torque. The Patriot feels amply energetic and the new 6-speed transmission works beautifully in smoothing the delivery, but it’s the vibration and lack of refined sounds that show the vehicle’s age.
This 4x4 is rated at 11.2 L/100km city driving and 8.7 L/100km on the highway. Although these are relatively good numbers for the SUV class, they still trail those of the Patriot’s biggest competitor, the Ford Escape. The Patriot was designed to imitate the look of the last generation of Jeep Cherokee and its rugged SUV boxiness is part of its quirky charm.
The ride in the 2014 Jeep Patriot is pleasant; the car does what is expected of it. It’s definitely not anything to be too excited about but the engine is powerful enough and the vehicle is fuel efficient enough, but it still has difficulty competing with newer SUV models such as the Ford Escape or Honda CR-V.
There are definitely some nice features that come with the 2014 Jeep Patriot such as remote start, adjustable roof rail crossbars, and the U-Connect Voice Command with Bluetooth. But inside, you find that the cheap plastics and hard materials have no place in a car this price.
The rear seats in the 2014 Patriot are pretty generous as far as leg and headroom go. Back seat passengers also have the luxury of being able to recline their chairs for added comfort. The car also offers retractable cup holders in the back to make more space when they’re not in use.
So here it is, if you’re looking for a small, affordable off-roader that can also satisfy as a daily driver then the 2014 Jeep Patriot gives you a viable, unique option in the SUV segment. However, if you’re not interested in taking the car off the road, there are other newer models that’ll do a better job.

|Power and Performance:|
The new transmission in the 2014 Jeep Patriot has a low first gear for quicker takeoffs, a tall top gear for relaxed cruising and—as we've already verified with a short spin—a significant relief from the coarse drone upon almost any level of acceleration that accompanied the CVT combination.
But that's only part of the story. Just as before the Patriot comes with three different drive systems: front-wheel drive. If you have snowy winters to navigate, or steep gravel or muddy trails to take to the campsite, you’ll want the available Freedom Drive I (all-wheel drive, but with a locking center differential).
Step up to the Freedom Drive II system, which is a hardier system up to task for tougher forest trails and true off-road conditions, and you’ll get the full-on ‘Trail-Rated’ badge—including additional skid plates and other upgrades. It's actually one of the better systems you can spec on a small crossover.
The engine is familiar: a 158-horsepower, 2.0-liter four-cylinder ‘World Engine.’ Top Limited models come upgrade to a 172-hp, 2.4-liter version; a five-speed manual gearbox is standard, while the six-speed automatic is offered as a step up across the lineup. EPA fuel economy ratings remain as high as 30 mpg on the highway, but they dip down to the 20-mpg mark if you get that Freedom Drive II package—and that's awfully close to Wrangler territory, we know.

|Interiors and Special Features:|
The 2014 Jeep Patriot comes standard with a four-speaker stereo and an auxiliary audio jack. Compared to rivals, the Patriot has limited standard tech offerings, but comes with some unique features like a rechargeable LED flashlight and liftgate speakers. Optional features include Bluetooth, air conditioning, power windows, keyless entry, navigation, remote start, satellite radio and a USB port. Many of these features come standard on several competitors.
Reviewers agree that the Patriot has large, legible gauges and straightforward controls that are easy to access. However, one auto writer says the steering wheel-mounted audio controls are not well-placed. Some reviewers say the available touch-screen navigation system is outdated, and that it makes accessing some audio settings more complicated than they should be.

The 2014 Jeep Patriot comes standard with antilock brakes (front disc, rear drum), traction and stability control, and full-length side curtain airbags. The Limited gets rear disc brakes. Front side airbags were optional last year but are now standard across all Patriot trim levels.
In Edmunds brake testing, the Patriot came to a stop from 60 mph in 121 feet, an average distance for this class.
In government crash testing, last year's Patriot earned an overall rating of four out of five stars, with three stars for total frontal-impact protection and five stars for side-impact protection. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave the Patriot the highest possible rating of "Good" in the moderate overlap frontal-offset, side-impact and roof strength tests. However, this compact Jeep received the lowest possible rating of "Poor" in the small overlap frontal-offset test. The Patriot's seat/head restraint design was rated "Good" for whiplash protection in rear impacts.
