Quick Look

The 2014 Jeep Cherokee is a crossover SUV that manages to deliver the same kind of off-road capability as the previous models, while also striking a fine balance between spaciousness and solid interior design. Its only flaw is its controversial exterior design that is definitely going to rub some buyers the wrong way.

Full Review

The 2014 Jeep Cherokee is a crossover SUV in the truest sense of the word – because it delivers a little bit of everything in every area. It’s this design outlook that separates the 2014 model from its predecessors, which were much more off-road-focused than this one. In short, this iteration is not just about off-road capability, but also about spaciousness and interior design.

The thing that you’ll undoubtedly notice about the new Jeep Cherokee is its controversial design. Many critics have slammed the strangeness of its iconic seven-portal grille, but if you look at other Jeeps, their front-end treatment is very similar. In fact, if you actually interact with it in real life as opposed to looking at it in photographs, you just might warm up to it. The Cherokee uses the same front-drive platform as the Dodge Dart, which makes it all the more impressive that it looks like a Jeep. If you get the Trailhawk version, you’ll notice a much more macho appearance, thanks to a higher ride height, red-painted front tow hooks, skidplates and more aggressive front and rear fascias. And if you like open skies when off-roading, the Cherokee offers a CommandView panoramic sunroof or the Sky Slider full-length-opening canvas roof. In other words, you can experience your trips to their fullest.

Inside, you get a trapezoidal "centre stack” along with an instrument panel layout that more or less looks the spread wings of an eagle. The seats are ergonomically designed, which means that they excellent support, while being trimmed with attractive cloth or Nappa leather. If you go for the top-of-the-line seats, you’ll find that they are power-adjustable, heated/ventilated and possess memory settings. At the back, the 60/40-split second-row seats move forward and backward, which provides extra passenger comfort and cargo flexibility. There’s also a wireless-device charging pad and a huge glovebox. The most impressive aspect, however, is the seven-inch full-colour configurable instrument cluster that works almost exactly like a smartphone.

Under the hood, the 2014 Cherokee comes with an impressive selection of engines. The top-tier powertrain is a 3.2-litre Pentastar V6, which produces 271 horsepower and 239 pound-feet of torque. The standard engine is a 16-valve, 2.4-litre Tigershark MultiAir2 four-cylinder engine. It uses an electro-hydraulic fully variable valve-lift system, while producing 184 horsepower and 171 pound-feet of torque. The more important aspect of this engine, however, is its highway fuel economy rating of 9.1 litres per 100 kilometres. Standard transmission for both engines is a nine-speed automatic, which is a first in this segment.

Overall, the 2014 Jeep Cherokee is a very decent vehicle – but only as long as you don’t mind the way it looks. While we like Cherokee’s daring design, we’re sure there are plenty of car buyers who will think otherwise. That’s why we cannot fully recommend this crossover SUV.

Power and Performance:

We've driven all the drivetrain combinations offered with the new Cherokee, and admire the performance range that can be dialed into its lunar-rover body with the right ticks on the options box. With a four-cylinder engine and front-wheel drive, it's a tall, economical hatchback; with the six-cylinder and Active Lock off-road system, it's a nimble rock climber.

The choice of engines doesn't have to be a vexing one: for a change at this end of the Chrysler lineup, they're both pretty good. The standard engine is a 2.4-liter in-line four rated at 184 horsepower and 171 pound-feet of torque. It's reasonably powerful, with a 0-60 mph time of about eight seconds in base trim. It's also, easily, the best-sounding Chrysler four-cylinder in a long time. The energetic nudge it gives to front-drive Cherokees isn't accompanied by the usual rasp and noise, just some mild exhaust drone. It's eerily vibration-free. It's also capable of a 31-mpg EPA highway rating, though 25 mpg combined sounds a lot more reasonable in everyday use.

Interiors and Special Features:

Both Jeep heritage (the trapezoidal "center stack") and Americana (an instrument panel layout that mimics the spread wings of an eagle) are represented in the 2014 Cherokee's attractive, upscale interior. The ergonomically designed seats offer good support and are trimmed with attractive cloth or Nappa leather. The top-of-the-line seats are power-adjustable, heated/ventilated and feature memory settings. The 60/40-split 2nd-row seats move forward and backward for increased passenger comfort and cargo flexibility. Among the coolest features are an available wireless-device charging pad and a glovebox so large "you could put a turkey in it," joked the Cherokee's lead interior designer, Winnie Chung. We also liked the optional 7-inch full-color configurable instrument cluster that functions like a smartphone.

Safety features:

Standard safety equipment on all 2014 Cherokees includes antilock disc brakes, stability and traction control, front and rear seat side airbags, side curtain airbags and front knee airbags. A rearview camera is either standard or optional on all models.

Trailhawk and Limited models are available with a large option package that includes a forward collision warning system (with automatic brake intervention in potential collision situations), a lane departure warning system that will give the steering wheel a nudge if you veer out of your lane on the highway, and blind-spot and rear cross-traffic alerts.
