Quick Look

The 2014 Infiniti Q60 Convertible only brings a new name to the road this year as it was formally known as the G37 Convertible. Overall, this car is the perfect option for a performance-oriented car buyer who doesn’t need much backseat room.

Full Review

The 2014 Infiniti Q60 Convertible is a fine blend of sportiness and luxury with some shortcomings in the practicality sector. The car has a powerful engine and top-notch quality and design. Its flowing lines and sturdy hunches make this car a looker, while the high-tech features add sophistication and functionality. Available in three trim levels, the Q60 (base), the Q60S 6MT and the Q60 IPL, this mid-level sport convertible will offer an awesome top-down driving experience.

The look of the Q60 convertible, albeit unchanged, is as sharp as ever. The sleek sheetmetal encompassing the vehicle along with the subtle chrome accents fit the car like a properly-tailored suit. This two-door vehicle has a fully-powered retractable-hardtop roof, making the transition between having the roof up or down a breeze. The standard bi-xenon headlights and LED taillights provide an upscale look at night. Standard in the well-equipped base trim are 18-inch alloy wheels, automatic xenon headlights, foglights and heated mirrors. Optional upgrades and advanced trim lines include upgraded 19-inch wheels, summer performance tires, sport-tuned suspension and steering, upgraded brakes and unique styling.

The interior of this four-seat coupe is nothing short of luxurious. Equipped with top-notch quality materials, the well-thought-out design makes the functionality of this vehicle seamless. Passengers will be welcomed by supple leather surfaces and optional wood trim. The front seats are both comfortable and spacious, but the rear bench is cramped and trunk space is very limited. Standard in the base trim is keyless entry and ignition, dual-zone automatic climate control, leather upholstery, heated eight-way power front seats, cruise control, a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, a 7-inch touchscreen display, Bluetooth phone connectivity, a rearview camera, a six-speaker audio system with a six-CD changer, satellite radio, an auxiliary input jack and an iPod/USB audio interface. Upgrading in trim line or optional packages can also buy you rear parking sensors, driver memory functions, heated and ventilated front seats, a 13-speaker Bose audio system specially designed for use in a convertible  and a navigation system.

The main feature of the Q60 convertible is the marriage between performance and style. The design is spot-on and the power underneath the hood definitely delivers. The option of three trim levels is always beneficial for those looking for customization. But the fact that the base line comes standard with great features is a bonus for buyers. There is a bit of a fault in features, however, when it comes to the upgrade options. The upgrades are grouped into packages, which you may need to choose in a specific order to get certain features. For example, if you take the Premium entry-level package, then you will need to bundle it with the Navigation package if you want those options. But, if you want the Sport package, you must also purchase the Navigation — and as a result the Premium — packages. For those looking to get the upgraded Technology package, they must select the preceding three options, which may be frustrating for some purchasers. The safety features standard in the Q60 convertible are antilock disc brakes, traction and stability control, automatically-deploying pop-up roll bars, front-seat mounted side airbags, door-mounted side curtain airbags and active front head restraints. The optional technology package will also upgrade safety features on this vehicle.

In true Infiniti fashion, when it comes to power and performance of the Q60 convertible, you will not be disappointed. The base and Q60S MT models come standard with a 3.7-liter V6 engine that delivers 330 horsepower and 270 pound-feet of torque. The standard transmission on the base is a seven-speed automatic, while the Q60S 6MT trim line comes with a six-speed manual. The Q60 IPL convertible gets the same engine tweaked for more power, which produces 343 horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque. This trim is offered with a seven-speed automatic transmission. Rear-wheel drive is standard on all Q60 convertible models

Overall, the Infiniti Q60 Convertible is a good option for those looking for a well-performing wind-in-hair driving experience. The athletic handling allows the Convertible to move well on the open road, while its second-to-none design will turn heads in the city.

Power and Performance:

Powering the base Q60 and Q60S 6MT models is a 3.7-liter V6 engine rated at 330 hp and 270 pound-feet of torque. The base model comes standard with a seven-speed automatic transmission, while the Q60S 6MT is only offered with a six-speed manual. Rear-wheel drive is standard on all Q60 convertible models.

The EPA's estimated fuel economy comes in at 20 mpg combined (17 city/25 highway) with the automatic and 19 mpg combined (16/24) with the manual. In Edmunds performance testing, a Q60 convertible with the automatic went from zero to 60 mph in a quick 6.0 seconds.

The Q60 IPL convertible uses a modified version of the 3.7-liter V6 that has been tuned to produce 343 hp and 273 lb-ft of torque. The seven-speed automatic is standard here. Despite the increase in power, though, don't expect the IPL to be much quicker than the base model. In our testing of various Q60 coupes, the regular and IPL versions turned in identical 0-60 times.

Interiors and Special Features:

The Infiniti Q60's interior is exceptional both in design and in quality of materials. The cabin is marked by supple leather surfaces and elegant, soft-sheen "Silk Obi" aluminum trim. The form-fitting standard driver's seat features 8-way power adjustability, while Sport 6MT models offer increased support and 12-way adjustability. Most vehicle functions are accessed through a 7-inch, full-color display mounted high in the center stack for better readability while behind the wheel. Regarding everyday use, rear outward visibility is obstructed to some extent by the coupe's racy C-pillars and the convertible's narrow rear glass, although the standard backup camera alleviates most reversing-related anxiety.

Safety features:

Standard safety features for the 2014 Infiniti Q60 convertible include antilock brakes, traction and stability control, automatically deploying pop-up roll bars, front-seat-mounted side airbags, door-mounted side curtain airbags and active front head restraints. The optional Technology package includes impending frontal collision preparation (pre-crash seatbelt tensioning and brake priming).

In Edmunds brake testing, a Q60 with summer tires came to a stop from 60 mph in 108 feet, a respectably short distance for a luxury convertible with summer tires.
