Full Review

The 2014 Hyundai Santa Fe is the more family-friendly version of this somewhat dual-natured crossover. Though if you have a small family, then the Sport variant may be a better fit for you. The regular Santa Fe’s biggest competitors in this segment are the Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4, while the Sport is more in line with the Honda Pilot and Toyota Highlander. Of course, we’re talking strictly about the regular Santa Fe, which is 8.5 inches longer.

In terms of exterior design, the 2014 Santa Fe is in line with the majority of modern crossovers, relying on calm yet cohesive lines. Even the base GLS variant comes with the outside mirrors and bumpers of the same colour as the body colour. The more upscale Limited version adds integrated fog lights, 19-inch aluminum-alloy wheels and roof rails. That being said, the base model will give you 18-inch aluminum alloy wheel. So, the differences between the high and low trims are minimal.

On the inside, the new Hyundai Santa Fe is reasonably spacious, offering a panoramic front view that allows for high outward visibility – though the back view is slightly less broad. When it comes to upholstery, the base model comes with stain-resistant cloth fabric along with user-friendly climate and audio controls. And if you’re concerned about the cabin’s materials, don’t be – all of them are of noteworthy quality, including even the rubber that you’ll find inside the door pulls.

As for passenger space, there’s plenty of it upfront – in the first two rows. So, if you’re thinking of putting adults behind the front seats, you can do so without hesitation. That being said, do reserved the third-row seats for your kids – or children in general – since they are noticeably tighter. The cargo area is on the conservative side, being much smaller than what you’d find in the crossover’s competitors.

When it comes to powertrains, you get only one option – a 3.3-litre V6, which can yield 290 horsepower and 252 pound-feet of torque. You can only combine it with a six-speed automatic transmission, which shifts easily enough and offers decent throttle response. The crossover’s towing capacity is also acceptable since the car can pull up 5,000 pounds, when necessary.

So, is the 2014 Hyundai Santa Fe worth the asking price of 31,099? We certainly believe so. It’s roomy, feature-rich and elegant, which is more than enough to warrant it at least a look. So, definitely take it for a ride.
