The 2014 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport is a chunky crossover that benefits significantly from its powerful and efficient engines, an attractive body and slick interior design. The 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine is particularly impressive for its excellent trade-off of power and economy.
The 2014 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport is a sizeable compact crossover that delivers quality in every aspect to make its already relatively affordable price point of $26,599 even more enticing. Some of the car’s highlights include a slick cabin and two very fuel-efficient but powerful engines. However, no matter where you look, the Santa Fe Sport is a treat.
In fact, as soon as you lay your eyes on this car, you’ll be blown away by its style, which includes keen attention to detail, calm lines and impressively aerodynamic shape, improved by slick underbody fairings. Though admittedly it’s a bit more conventional than a car like Tucson, it still can stand its ground as a very good-looking crossover. In fact, if you aren’t a fan of curves, like the ones you’d find on a Sonata, then you’re definitely going to like the more restrained shape of the Santa Fe Sport.
The external features that might catch your eye are a chrome grille and door handles; LED-enhanced headlights and taillights; and an improved rear spoiler. The Sport also gets 17-, 18- and 19-inch alloy wheels, which are exclusive to this specific Santa Fe model.
Once you get into the car, you will instantly be impressed by how “mature” its cabin really looks. First, you’ll notice that it comes with a set of user-friendly controls in the centre stack, framed by hefty air vents on each side. You’ll then see that everything is accessible and easy to use, so you won’t be fiddling with the controls at any point during your trips. The dash is very neat too since it sits quite low in front of the passenger, but then curves around the centre stack and gauges. You’ll also find plenty of quality materials – like good stain and odour-resistant Yes Essentials fabric, sturdy plastics and optional leather.
There’s a decent amount of room in the back and at the front, which allows tall individuals to fit in comfortably. Additionally, the second-row seats slide on 5.2-inch track to provide better adjustability – similar to the way it’s done in the Chevy Equinox. The cargo area is quite generous too, especially if you fold the back seats flat. Sure, there are only five seats in total, since this is a compact, but that shouldn’t get in your way – because it uses all of them to their fullest potential.
Under the hood, the 2014 Santa Fe Sport delivers two engines – a 2.4-litre inline four and a 2.0-litre turbocharged inline four-cylinder. The 2.4-litre engine can pump out 190 horsepower and 181 pound-feet of torque, while the 2.0-litre one can deliver 264 horsepower and 269 pound-feet of torque. Both engines offer an excellent trade-off of economy and power, which means that they’ll both provide you with a decent amount of power for a sufficient price.
All-in-all, there isn’t anything in the 2014 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport that will disappoint you. It’s a car that succeeds in everything it sets out to do. So, if you’re looking for a relatively affordable crossover, then give the Santa Fe Sport a try.

Powering the base 2014 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport is a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 190 horsepower and 181 pound-feet of torque. Front-wheel drive is standard, and all-wheel drive is optional. The only available transmission is a six-speed automatic. Fuel economy estimates are decent, with an EPA-estimated 23 mpg in combined driving (20 city/27 highway) for front-wheel drive. With all-wheel drive, fuel economy drops to 21 mpg combined (19 city/25 highway). Most competitors have slightly better fuel economy ratings.
The Santa Fe Sport 2.0T has a turbocharged 2.0-liter engine that increases output to 264 hp and 269 lb-ft of torque. Fuel economy drops only slightly, with an EPA-estimated 22 mpg combined (19 city/27 highway) for the front-drive 2.0T and 21 mpg (18 city/24 highway) for all-wheel drive.
In Edmunds performance testing, an all-wheel-drive 2.0T Santa Fe accelerated from a standstill to 60 mph in 8.1 seconds, which is slower than average for a small crossover with an upgraded engine.
