Quick Look

The 2014 Hyundai Equus may not be the popular choice for those shopping for luxury vehicles, but don’t be mistaken, this sedan has lavishness to match. With premium comfort, scores of standard features and a sleek look, the Equus is the cheaper luxury treat.

Full Review

The 2014 Hyundai Equus may slip by luxury car shoppers’ radar because of the modest Hyundai style. Nevertheless, there are many comparable traits between the Equus and other full-size luxury sedans—from brands like Mercedes, BMW and Lexus. The affordable price is of course not one of those commonalities. The Hyundai luxury vehicle is considerably cheaper than many other choices on the market, such as the Audi A7.

Yet, the 2014 Equus still delivers the opulence of a modern day luxury vehicle. On the outside, the Equus looks intelligent and sophisticated, rather than the high-end assertiveness often associated with vehicles of superior grandeur. The wide grilles, the slanted headlights and the solid shape is a subdued look, but far from classless.

Inside the cabin, the Equus received multiple design upgrades that include a finer grade of wood and leather. The spacious interior also includes many standard comfort features, including tri-zone automatic and rear seat climate controls, heated and ventilated power front seats, driver seat memory, heated power-reclining rear seats, a heated power tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, a power rear sunshade and an auto-dimming mirror.

Technology is an important aspect of the 2014 Equus’s improvement. There is a 9.2-inch navigation display, a digital speedometer and tachometer that replicate traditional analog dials and a head-up display that projects basic information and turn-by-turn navigation instructions on the windshield.

Under the hood of the rear-wheel-drive Equus is a 5.0-liter V8 engine that is capable of delivering 429 hp and 376 lb/feet of torque. Perhaps the sedan’s biggest flaw is in its fuel economy. The Equus has an abysmal 18 mpg combined. With a vehicle with such a big appetite, it puts into question how much the saving is worth. For an equally fancy car at around the price range with slightly better economy, consider the Cadillac XTS.

Where the 2014 Equus wins us back is in the standard features. The 19-inch wheels, adjustable air suspension, adaptive bi-xenon headlights, LED fog and running lights, rear-view camera, parking sensors, lane departure, blind-spot and rear cross-traffic alert systems, power-closing trunk and keyless ignition and entry and many more standard features can all be found on the inexpensive Hyundai luxury vehicle.

The 2014 Hyundai Equus has definitely taken a substantial step towards its competitors in terms of luxury, but there is still some kinks in the performance and economy area that it needs to be worked out. With that being said, there isn’t much drivers can do to deny the Equus of the honours in the luxury class—it is a fiscally advantageous option.
