In terms of size, the coupes have the smallest cabins out of the entire Elantra lineup since they don’t come with a single-lever arrangement. As a result, it’s not easy to get into the back seats due to their low placement and tight feeling overall. And speaking of those seats – you definitely don’t want to transport adults in them over long distances because there’s just not enough headroom or legroom – even for midsize individuals. That said, the rear seats can be folded flat, which allows for larger items to be placed into the car’s already sizeable trunk.

Under the hood, the new Hyundai Elantra Coupe comes with a 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine that has also appeared on the recent Kia Forte. This one produces 173 horsepower and 154 pound-feet of torque. It was added to the lineup mainly because the Elantra has never felt as robust or engaging as some of its competitors, such as the Ford Focus. In many ways, it’s a real improvement, but it’s still not quite on the same level as the Focus. On top of that, the coupe comes strictly with a six-speed automatic transmission, having dropped the option for a manual one completely, which is a bit of a disappointment.

The 2014 Hyundai Elantra Coupe aims to improve on the performance of the previous models by introducing an all-new engine. The engine can be paired with an automatic transmission only since Hyundai has decided to drop the option for a manual one altogether.

Fuel economy is actually much better than in the previous models thanks to this new engine. The Elantra Coupe carries the EPA ratings of 9.8 litres per 100 kilometres in the city and 6.9 litres per 100 kilometres on the highway. These numbers are not bad in the larger scheme of things, but if fuel efficiency is the most important aspect for you, then you should consider getting the Ford Focus since its fuel economy is much better. At the end of the day, however, the Elantra Coupe’s engine is as good as it can be for its relatively low price.

Interiors and Special Features:

The 2014 Hyundai Elantra Coupe features a very attractive cabin – that matches what you see on the outside in terms of overall appeal. It has an hourglass-shaped centre console and reshaped vents on the centre stack. The climate control system now has two knobs instead of one, while the shift lever contains an aux jack, a power point and a USB port. There are also many cubbies and storage bins scattered throughout the cabin. But in general, everything just looks neat and cosy, so there’s little to complain about here.

The coupe offers quite a bit of legroom and headroom at the front along with the adjustable driver’s seat that conforms to the contours of your body. The back seats could use more space, however, since even a midsize adult would feel uncomfortable there – especially during longer trips. The sedans have a bit more space, but the coupes are far too tight. The good news is that the trunk is quite spacious. And if you fold the back seats flat (since you won’t need them anyway due to their size), you can fit in larger objects.

The standard features include power windows, locks and mirrors, keyless entry, air conditioning, cruise control, telescopic steering and Bluetooth with audio streaming. You can also get a new touchscreen display, a “next-gen” navigation system and access to Pandora Internet radio. Additionally, the coupes now have a leather-wrapped shifter and steering wheel.

Safety features:

The 2014 Hyundai Elantra Coupe comes with a solid amount of safety features that should satisfy the majority of safety-conscious drivers. And since this car isn’t meant to be expensive, the kind of features it delivers is very impressive. Last year, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has awarded the Elantra sedans with five stars, while the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has named it its Top Safety Pick. Since sedans and coupes are more or less similar and this year’s model hasn’t endured any real structural changes, it’s likely that the new Elantra will receive the same ratings.

Some its basic safety features include six standard airbags, electronic stability control with traction control system and advanced brake technologies. Overall, there are plenty of features – and it’s likely that all of them will work just fine (if the previous models are anything to go by).
