The 2014 Dodge Journey is an impressive crossover SUV that surpasses its predecessors thanks to a feature-rich cabin, upgraded suspension and reliable safety equipment. Under the hood, there is also a very powerful and efficient V-6 engine, which will impress any driver looking for that extra boost in their vehicle.

The 2014 Dodge Journey is a notch above its somewhat underrated predecessors thanks to the complete interior redesign in 2011, upgraded suspension and a very impressive engine. In other words, this crossover SUV is what Dodge Journey should have been when it was first introduced in 2008, offering the kind of quality we’ve come to expect from Chrysler.

Originally, Journey was just a car that failed to compete thanks to a cheaply-designed cabin and mediocre engine. And Journey’s rivals aren’t exactly meek either – since it’s up against the likes of Chevy Equinox, Ford Edge, Honda CR-V, Hyundai Santa Fe and Toyota Venza. It’s a tough competition, but if there’s one brand that can hold its ground, it would be Dodge. So, if none of the aforementioned cars interest you, then the 2014 Dodge Journey would make a fantastic alternative.

The most notable feature of the new Journey is its totally revamped interior, which involves a graceful instrument panel, smooth-feeling fabrics and quality materials. Design-wise, the cabin has a very clean and modern look to it, featuring a very humble layout with large knobs and dials along with an 8.4-inch LCD touchscreen.

You’ll also notice that the car offers plenty of room for people and cargo alike. Journey’s front seats are particularly large, being much wider than the ones in other crossovers. Some may call them “American-sized.” The rear seats are impressive too – since they can easily fit tall adults, while providing ample headspace and legroom and being able to slide fore and aft. Those seats can also be folded flat to create more cargo space in case there isn’t enough – though that’s very unlikely.

Outside, the 2014 Journey hasn’t improved as much as on the inside, but it still looks better than the older models. It effortlessly straddles the gap between square-like SUVs and tall wagons, offering a somewhat unique appearance that differs from the majority of modern crossovers. And while its design certainly is certainly not whacky, it does manage to steer clear of the samey look that plagues many modern cars.

But aside from delivering an improved look, the new Dodge Journey also comes with a very powerful 3.6-litre “Pentastar” V-6 engine, which can pump out 283 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque. It’s paired with a six-speed automatic transmission, which works well for the most part, but seems to shudder at times – though that’s not a huge issue. The crossover is also available with a 2.4-litre four-cylinder engine, which can produce 173 horsepower and 166 pound-feet of torque, but is far too noisy and inefficient to be worth your money. The V-6 is clearly the superior option here since it offers more power, efficiency and a better performance overall.

Another point of interest is the car’s handling. Journey is surprisingly responsive and nimble for a vehicle of this type, which makes it a real pleasure to drive. And thanks to its much improved suspension, which loads and unloads with ease, this car feels slimmer and lower than it has any right to. Its ride is quite impressive too, featuring the proper damping and roll control that befits a family car like this one.

All-in-all, the 2014 Dodge Journey is a solid package that delivers quality in nearly every area, leaving very little room for complaints. After all, even its safety features are fantastic. You can certainly nitpick, but that would be a waste of time. The better option would be to take this crossover for a spin and see if it’s what you’re looking for.

The 2014 Dodge Journey is a crossover SUV that bridges the gap between square-shaped SUVs and tall wagons, avoiding the now cliché appearance of the majority of crossovers on the market. On the other hand, the car is still ordinary enough to be accepted by the more conservative drivers out there – and that’s exactly what makes it so attractive.

It features a crosshair grille, square shoulders and embossed fenders that give the car a somewhat athletic appearance. Admittedly, the Journey’s profile is a little droopy, but thanks to its sculpted sheetmetal and protruding wheel wells, it manages to be neither curvaceous nor boxy.

On the inside, things get even better since Chrysler and Dodge have completely revamped the Journey’s cabin. It’s much slicker now, and far more feature-rich – it’s the way this car was meant to be when it was first released back in 2008.

Power and Performance:

The 2014 Dodge Journey offers a choice of two engines – a 2.4-litre four-cylinder or a 3.6-litre “Pentastar” V-6. Out of the two of them, the V-6 is clearly the better engine since it can produce 283 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque, relying on a six-speed automatic transmission. It’s also relatively quiet and has very reasonable fuel economy for the amount of power it offers. Its EPA rating is 12.9 litres per 100 kilometres in the city and 8.4 litres per 100 kilometres on the highway, which are very, very solid numbers, especially for a crossover.

Unfortunately, the four-cylinder engine is on the opposite end of the spectrum, being able to generate 173 horsepower and 166 pound-feet of torque only. While this amount of power may sound reasonable in an economy vehicle, it’s not completely appropriate here. The main reason for that is because there’s nothing “economical” about this engine. It’s far too inefficient for a car of this size, carrying the EPA ratings of 11.2 litres per 100 kilometres in the city and 7.7 litres per 100 kilometres on the highway. The V-6 will cost you a bit more, but it will be a much more worthy purchase in the long run. Basically – stay as far from the four-cylinder engine as you can.

Interiors and Special Features:

Inside, the 2014 Dodge Journey pairs high quality materials with clean and modern design to a great effect. Add to that easy-to-use devices and you get a very impressive cabin. The best part about it is the 8.4-inch touchscreen, which is available in all models except the SE, either with or without navigation. It’s large, easy to use, and it’s slick too, making for an excellent addition.

Journey also features a shapely centre stack that involves round cut-tube gauges and a thick steering wheel. You will also find plenty of cleverly-placed storage bins and other features, such as a fold-flat front passenger seat and integrated child booster seats for the second row.

And since this is a family car, it comes with plenty of space and comfort to satisfy even the pickiest parents out there. Front seats are especially spacious – since they’re wider than the majority of what you’ll find out there. Back seats aren’t faring much worse, being able to comfortably fit two tall adults and three kids. Third-row seats, however, aren’t quite as adult-friendly, but that’s very typical in crossovers.

Most buyers should also be pleased with the size of this car’s cargo room. It offers 10.7 cubic feet of space with the third row raised and 37 cubic feet behind the second row. So, if you’re looking to transport stacks of LCD TVs or desktops, then this trunk will accommodate your needs in spades.

Safety features:

The 2014 Dodge Journey tries its best to be a family-friendly vehicle, and as such, its safety features are top notch. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has awarded the previous models with the honour of being its Top Safety Pick since they’ve earned “good” ratings for roof strength as well as rear, side and frontal impacts. Meanwhile, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has awarded the crossover with five stars for side-impact protection and four stars overall.

In terms of the actual features, the 2014 Journey offers stability and traction control; active head restraints; four-wheel disc brakes with anti-lock controls; and options like a rearview camera and parking sensors. There are enough features to let you forget safety for good and simply enjoy the ride.
