Quick Look

The 2014 Chrysler 300 is one of the largest sedans the manufacturer currently has on its list. It’s also one the most functional ones, offering feature-rich and spacious cabin, aggressive exterior design and a choice of four engines. The 6.4-litre V8 engine is particularly eye-grabbing since it can pump out 470 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of torque. Those looking for an alternative to the Cadillac CTS, should definitely give this car a look.

Full Review

The 2014 Chrysler 300 is one of the largest sedans the manufacturer has to offer, But size isn’t everything, as you may know. Luckily, the 300 delivers on all fronts, providing an excellent set of engines, feature-rich cabin and more. Overall, it’s a purposeful and spacious car that’s almost impossible to hate.

If you want to see the evidence of how functional it really is, you don’t have to look any further than its outer body. First off, its face features a large chrome grille that’s as bold as they come, while its backside comes with elegant taillights, aggressive lower design and small-ish windows that accompany a lowering roofline. Other features that you’ll find on its body include LED daytime running lights and air-intake outlines. As a result, even the most basic variant looks great, thanks to 17-inch aluminum-alloy wheels and a slick chrome trim.

On the inside, the 2014 300 offers a fine combination of luxury, comfort and space. You’ll find plenty of soft-touch surfaces, stylish instrumentation and a well-designed steering wheel that has a very nice grip. As for the seating, you’ll discover that all of them offer great support, while being able to keep the passengers in place during sharp turns. In addition, you also get a host of luxury features like two-tone leather upholstery, leather-stitched cover for the instrument panel and 12-way front power seats with heating and cooling.

The best part about the new Chrysler 300, however, is the extensive selection of engines since you can choose one out of four – two V6’s and two V8’s. The 3.6-litre V6 can pump out 292 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque, while the other version of this engine can produce 300 horsepower and 264 pound-feet of torque. Both of the V6’s come with an eight-speed automatic transmission. The V8’s on the other hand come fitted with a five-speed automatic that has an AutoStick manual-shift function. The 5.7-litre V8 can produce 363 horsepower and 394 pound-feet of torque, while the 6.4-litre version can pump out the hulking 470 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of torque. Basically, no matter what you want, Chrysler will have you covered. The only problem here is slightly subpar fuel economy, but it’s not awful enough to devalue any of these engines.

At the end of the day, the 2014 Chrysler 300 is not the kind of car you want to overlook. With a price of $34,595, this is a sedan that’s worth at least a glance. Its direct competitors are Cadillac CTS and Ford Taurus.

Power and Performance:

All 2014 Chrysler 300 trims except the SRT8 come standard with a 3.6-liter V6 that produces 292 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque. The 300S V6 gets minor tweaks (including a sport-tuned exhaust) that bump output to 300 hp. An eight-speed automatic is standard, as is rear-wheel drive. All-wheel drive is optional.

In Edmunds performance testing, a rear-drive 300S went from zero to 60 mph in 6.9 seconds, which is about average for a V6-powered full-size sedan. An all-wheel-drive 300C with the V6 took just 0.2 second longer in spite of its added weight.

EPA-estimated fuel economy for the V6 is a respectable 19 mpg city/31 mpg highway and 23 combined. All-wheel drive, which is available on all V6-powered models, drops those numbers to 18/27/21.

Safety features:

Every 2014 Chrysler 300 comes with antilock brakes, traction and stability control, front side airbags, side curtain airbags, a driver knee airbag and active front head restraints. A rearview camera is standard on all but the base 300. The SafetyTec package adds a blind-spot warning system, a rear cross-traffic warning system and a forward collision warning system.

In Edmunds brake testing, the base 300 came to a stop from 60 mph in a better-than-average 118 feet. The 300S was essentially the same; however, a heavier 300C AWD took 133 feet: a subpar braking distance for this class. Meanwhile, an SRT8 stopped in an excellent 111 feet, though its high-performance summer tires certainly provided additional grip, enabling it to excel in this test.

In government crash testing, the 300 came up aces, earning a top five-star overall rating with five stars for total frontal impact safety and five stars for total side-impact safety. Likewise, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave the 300 its top rating of "Good" in moderate-overlap frontal-offset, side-impact and roof-strength crash tests.
