The 2014 Chrysler 200 is a wonderful midsized sedan that’s perfect as the family transporter. We really like the Chrysler 200 S because it features some neat and sporty styling that sets it apart from the base model. This vehicle produces decent power and returns great fuel efficiency. The 2014 Chrysler 200 S is the perfect car for any Canadian family.

Once you get inside the 2014 Chrysler 200, you will see right away that Chrysler put a lot of effort into the fine details. If you get the 200 S, there are so distinct styling cues that set it apart from the regular model. Some features that are available with the 2014 Chrysler 200 include steering wheel radio control, cruise-control, and hands-free Bluetooth connectivity to make it a little bit easier to talk on the phone while driving without getting too distracted. It also comes with an auxiliary output so you can easily listen to your iPod or your phone.

On the dashboard of the 2014 Chrysler 200, Chrysler actually borrowed some elements from the Chrysler 300 and incorporated them into the 200. One of these features includes the analog clock that is mounted in the center of the dashboard above the entertainment system. This feature is supposed to make the car look a bit classier, but at the same time it’s a little bit old school. However, we’re still a fan of it and think it looks great.

Everything inside the 2014 Chrysler 200 flows together really well, and it’s most likely because everything is just so damn simple. The buttons for the entertainment system are easy to read and simple and are laid out well enough to make the system easy to use. It’s definitely not a techy car, but if you’re looking for a family sedan to get you where you need to go, it definitely has enough to keep everyone happy.

The 2014 Chrysler 200 is available with two very different engines. The base model receives a 2.4-litre four-cylinder engine which gives out 173-horsepower and 166 pound-feet of torque. It’s definitely not a racecar, but why should it be?

However, if you’re looking for a bit more power, the 2014 200 S comes with a 3.6-litre six-cylinder Pentastar engine that has become the hallmark engine for most Chrysler vehicles. This engine pumps out 283-horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque. Altogether you get 110 more horses with the V6 engine which definitely makes the car very enjoyable to drive around in. It has plenty of “get up and go” to zip around traffic and it drives quite comfortably.

The exterior of the 2014 Chrysler 200 has a lot of great details, especially the S model. At the front you get a really nice gloss black grille and projector headlights that give the car a mean stare. You can also choose to upgrade to 18” aluminum alloy wheels that beautifully complete the sleek side profile of the car.

Everything in the 2014 Chrysler 200 comes together beautifully and it’s hard to find something wrong with it. For a great family cruiser, look no further than the 2014 Chrysler 200.

Power and Performance:

There are essentially two different powertrain flavors of the 2014 Chrysler 200--four-cylinder and V-6--and they couldn't be more different.

While we tend to recommend base four-cylinder versions of other mid-size sedans as perfectly fine for most shoppers, the base 2.4-liter, 173-horsepower four-cylinder in the Chrysler 200 is raspy and raucous, and considerably thirstier than other base fours. The V-6, on the other hand, is smooth and strong, and with 283 horsepower on tap truly does feel like it has a 110-hp advantage.

The 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 is installed in many different Chrysler, Dodge, and Jeep products, ranging from the Jeep Grand Cherokee to the Dodge Challenger and Jeep Wrangler, and here it makes the lighter 200 especially fleet-footed. It's a little thrummy in the middle of its rev range, but its 260 pound-feet of torque is available right where the six-speed automatic transmission keeps revs during relaxed, normal driving.

In general, the six-speed automatic transmissions shift smoothly, especially under full-throttle acceleration, although shifts are lumpier under part throttle. This transmission includes such tall fifth and sixth gears, that if you have mountain grades nearby or do a lot of passing, you'll be dabbing down several gears frequently. There aren't any paddle-shifters, but you can manually select the gears through a manual gate on the shift lever.

We wouldn't call the 2.4-liter gutless--it's actually quite perky for a base engine--but its lack of refinement tosses aside any luxury-sedan pretenses from the cabin look and feel. Its coarse tone has been quieted by more noise blanketing in recent model years, but there's still some bothersome vibrations as well as a flat spot in the middle revs. Just stay away from base LX models, which remain the only ones to come with a four-speed automatic transmission (expect widely spaced gears and jarring downshifts); the four tends to have a flat spot in the middle of the rev range, and while it's not perky with the six-speed automatic either, that transmission works well enough with it.

Four-cylinder versions of the 2014 Chrysler 200 get gas mileage that's surprisingly low. At either 7.8 L/100km on the highway with the four-cylinder engine, the base engine in the 200 Sedan gets lower mileage than some competing V-6 sedans.

Meanwhile, the V-6 models get 12.4 L/100km city, 8.11 L/100km highway--figures that aren't so bad, yet ones that are far below those of the new Honda Accord V-6, for instance.

Interiors and Special Features:

Chrysler interiors of the past have often been hard plastic and frumpy colors, but the 2014 Chrysler 200's interior seems more appropriate to an Acura, Lexus or Audi, with pleasing shapes, soft-touch surfaces, tight seams and chrome highlights. The upholstery, whether cloth or leather, is tailored like a nice suit. Standard are a driver's adjustable lumbar support and split-folding rear seatbacks. Those in front ride well but, if the front seats are slid all the way back, legroom in the rear is cramped. Finally, the noise insulation is exemplary, which is nice for using the Bluetooth or catching some tunes.

Standard equipment for the 2014 Chrysler 200 LX starts with the 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine and 4-speed automatic transmission, and includes power windows, mirrors and locks, keyless entry, a remote trunk release, heated side mirrors, 17-inch wheels with covers, air conditioning with filtration, a tilt and telescoping steering wheel with audio controls, driver's-side lumber and height adjustment, and an AM/FM stereo with MP3-compatible CD player. Instrumentation includes LED lighting, an outside temperature display and a stylish analog clock.

Above the 200 LX, the two up-level trims are the Touring and Limited, each of which can be equipped with the S trim package that includes 18-inch wheels, black-finish grille and blackout surrounds. Standard on the Touring and Limited is a 6-speed automatic transmission, aluminum-alloy wheels, automatic on/off headlights, 8-way power driver's seat and SiriusXM Satellite Radio. The luxury-oriented Limited adds a V6 engine, leather, heated front seats, 17-inch wheels, touch-screen audio system with a hard drive (though navigation is optional on all but the LX), foglights, Boston Acoustic audio, remote start and Chrysler's UConnect hands-free phone setup.

Safety features:

The 2014 Chrysler 200 comes standard with antilock brakes, traction and stability control, active head restraints and front side airbags. The sedan gets side curtain airbags and the convertible gets front-seat-mounted side airbags with head protection.

In Edmunds brake testing, a Limited sedan came to a stop from 60 mph in 127 feet, which is slightly longer than average for this class. A Limited convertible stopped in 121 feet.

In government crash tests, the 200 sedan received four out of five stars for overall crashworthiness, along with four stars for frontal-impact crash protection and three stars for side-impact protection. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety awarded the Chrysler 200 sedan the highest possible rating of "Good" in its moderate-overlap frontal-offset, side-impact and roof-strength tests. The 200 sedan also earned a second-best "Acceptable" rating in the institute's newer small-overlap frontal-offset crash test. The Chrysler 200 convertible earned "Good" ratings in the moderate-overlap frontal-offset and side-impact tests.
