Quick Look

The CTS began a revolution in Cadillac that has brought the manufacturer back into the luxury car market as a serious competitor. After spending more than a decade straddling the line between compact and midsize, the third generation CTS can be a true midsize luxury sedan thanks to the introduction of the small ATS last year. With increased size, power, and price, the new 2014 CTS is ready to battle the length of the Mercedes-Benz E250 and the BMW 528i. Is this plan too ambitious? Or has the CTS finally come into its own? Lets find out.

Full Review

There will be a choice of three new engines in the 2014 Cadillac CTS. In base models for the first time ever, will be a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine that makes 272-horsepower. Also available will be the 3.6-litre six-cylinder engine which delivers 321-horsepower.

But the big news for the 2014 model is the all-new 3.6-litre twin turbo engine which delivers a massive 420-horsepower and 430 pound-feet of torque. This engine will be found in V-Sport models, not to be confused with the CTS-V, which will deliver even more power.

Four-cylinder models and all-wheel-drive six-cylinder models will use the six-speed automatic transmission, while both the rear-wheel drive V6 and the V-Sport will use the brand new eight-speed automatic transmission.

In regards to fuel efficiency, the base 2014 Cadillac CTS model is expected to achieve 11.76 L/100km city and 7.84 L/100km highway. While the V-Sport twin turbo model is expected to clock in at 13.84 L/100km city and 9.41 L/100km highway.

The CTS has always been about style and this new model oozes it from every angle. The new 2014 CTS is longer with a lower roofline and prowl which gives it a purposeful stance. The front-end has this elegant almost old-school luxury look that may be the defining moment in the evolution of Cadillac’s art and science design team. Head on, the 2014 CTS is instantly recognizable thanks to the split dual vertical LED strips, and it gives it a serious dose of presence on the road. 198 LEDs are on the outside of the CTS alone.

The back end of the 2014 Cadillac CTS is a little less unique and definitely has a few big brother exterior styling cues worked in. The CTS will be available with 17 or 19-inch wheels, as well as some gorgeous 18-inch wheels on the V-Sport models.

Inside the 2014 CTS, the sedan looks and feels far more premium than the outgoing model. The previous two generations of the CTS but they never felt special the way a BMW or Mercedes does. The new CTS might not be there quite yet, but the gap has definitely narrowed.

There are eight different interiors available in the new 2014 CTS and, of course, the newest technology is present. The tech inside includes an infotainment system, heated steering wheel, heated and cooled seats, a 12.3-inch customizable gauge clutch, two different Bose audio systems, and an over-engineered motorized cup holder.

But it’s not all good news inside the CTS. Much like the ATS, the CTS has one of the smallest back seats and trunks in its class. At only 35.4-inches of rear legroom and a 13.7 cubic foot trunk, the CTS is smaller in both categories than the Lexus GS, Infiniti M, BMW 5-series, Audi A6, and Mercedes E-Class. But take a seat in the back and you’ll find that legroom is actually ample but its headroom that isn’t that great.

Cadillac boasts that the CTS is the lightest rear-wheel-drive vehicle in the segment and weighs in at just over 3,600 pounds. It is based on the ATS which is know for its driving dynamics. To make the 2014 Cadillac CTS even better, every single model will come with Brembo brakes and the option of adding the magnetic ride control.

The magnetic ride control is one of the best adaptive suspension we’ve had the chance to test drive where sport mode really hunkers the car down to the road. Touring mode makes it a really nice highway cruiser. Power in this model is more than ample and of course, this car has almost zero body roll in the corners. But if you want some serious sport you need to step up to the V-Sport.

Added to the standard performance features are Pirelli summer tires, a quicker steering ratio, a heavy-duty track cooling option, programmable track mode, and the electronic limited slip rear differential.

The 2014 Cadillac CTS is definitely a step up to some serious game for this manufacture. This amazing luxury vehicle offers the looks and power at a really great value.

Power and Performance:

The Cadillac CTS has chased the performance icons of the German auto industry for a couple of generations, getting lapped the first time around and pulling within sight in the most recent edition. With its third pass at the leaders, the CTS has a legitimate claim on best-in-class handling when it's a Vsport.

We've driven a sampler of pre-production 2014 CTS sedans, all the new powertrains and a few of the suspension combinations that show the CTS's all-around, newfound finesse. It flatters the 5-Series and E-Class with road manners inspired by them, without imitating them. It finishes the work started by the Cadillac ATS--the job of convincing haters and doubters that a Cadillac CTS deserves mention in the same breath.

With the choice of three powertrains, the 2014 CTS sedan approaches the mid-size luxury class evenly. At the entry end, there's a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder, rated at 272 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque--about 32 horsepower up on the Jaguar XF's new turbo four, and also BMW's turbo four, while cranking out 30 lb-ft more torque than the same engine did last year in the ATS sedan. It's the least appealing of the CTS' engines to listen to, even with active noise cancellation, but its peak power drops in at usefully low revs and lingers into the 5500-rpm range.

Interiors and Special Features:

Cadillac's styling streak keeps momentum with the 2014 CTS. The third-generation mid-size Caddy finally tackles the thorny E-Class/5-Series/A6 superset head-on, while it marches a few more brisk steps away from the straight-edged Art & Science theming that broke the brand out of its fin-de-siecle doldrums.

The retreat from the angle is unmistakable. From some perspectives, the 2014 CTS has an uncanny resemblance to the Mercedes-Benz E-Class. It's all in the rear roofline, the way the pillar bends down toward the trunklid, the shapes of the side glass. Everywhere else, the CTS is Cadillac, evolving as it is. The blunt edges have been smoothed down. The CTS' grille has fewer ribs and a higher badge, and the vertical headlamps get LED trim that does the neat trick of pulling the nose to the ground, while it picks it up and into the fenders. It's as much a signature look at night as Audi's LED-framed headlamps, or Dodge's rings-of-fire rear ends.

Safety features:

Standard safety features for the 2014 Cadillac CTS include antilock disc brakes, traction and stability control, active front head restraints, front-seat side airbags and full-length side curtain airbags. Also standard is OnStar (which includes automatic crash notification, on-demand roadside assistance, an emergency button, stolen vehicle locator and active intervention, and remote door unlock) and rear parking sensors.

In Edmunds testing of a CTS V-Sport with the optional performance brake pads, we recorded an impressive 108-foot stop from 60 mph. That is excellent for this class of sedan with summer-rated tires.
