Quick Look

The 2014 Buick LaCrosse is a midsize sedan that is an improvement over the previous models in just about every way. Its cabin, body, engines and special features all bear the mark of premium design. In other words, this is not the Buick of the yesteryear – it’s here to compete against the likes of the Lexus ES and Acura TL, and its price fully reflects that.

Full Review

The 2014 Buick Lacrosse is now a premium vehicle – just like Buick as a whole. This car in particular is one of the best reminders of what makes this brand premium these days. The new model brings with it updated interior design and a number of useful high-tech features, like adaptive cruise control, back cross-traffic alerts, lane change alerts and a refreshed touchscreen interface. But of course the story doesn’t end there since this midsize sedan has plenty of other additions, which are just as relevant!

On the outside, the 2014 LaCrosse carries a few updates as well. Those include a slightly enlarged Buick waterfall grille, active shutters on the lower grille to improve aerodynamics at higher speeds, slicker hood design and sharper headlights that allow articulating bi-xenon HID lights. If that’s not enough, the Lacrosse also has an all-new back fascia and decklid with wraparound LED taillights and an integrated spoiler. In other words, this car is even prettier and more functional than the previous models. Buick is certainly making some crazy investments here!

But what about the inside, you ask? Well, the interior is just as relevant to the affairs as the exterior. In fact, it’s even more relevant since the amount of additions it has is far more significant. The seats are new, and all the trims but the basic one feature leather. On top of that, the car comes with a new centre control stack that has an eight-inch touchscreen, new IntelliLink telematics system and four new colour and trim combos. As for the materials, all of them have received an upgrade as well, with soft-touch surfaces and real wood trim dominating the proceedings. And since this is a premium vehicle, there’s plenty of room in the front and back as well as absolutely superb sound isolation.

Under the hood, the new Buick Lacrosse offers a choice of two powertrains – a 2.4-litre four-cylinder and a 3.6-litre V6. The four-cylinder can produce 182 horsepower and 172 pound-feet of torque, while the V6 pumps out 304 horsepower and 264 pound-feet of torque. The latter engine is optional on the lower trims and mandatory on Premium I, Premium II and Touring offerings. The four-cylinder on the other hand is standard on the base and Leather models. You can also get all-wheel drive with the Leather and Premium I packages, but with a V6 only. All engines are combined with the latest six-speed automatic transmission for maximum speed and performance.

Overall, the 2014 Buick LaCrosse is a fantastic car that makes for quite an intense rival for the likes of the Lexus ES and Acura TL. So, if you’ve been looking for a car that’s a real head turner, then definitely take this puppy out for a drive. It’s worth it.

Power and Performance:

Buick splits the LaCrosse into two quite distinct versions. One's pitched for efficiency's sake, while the other tackles Buick's traditional reputation for smooth moves.

The base powertrain takes a 2.4-liter four-cylinder and couples it to an "eAssist" mild-hybrid system made up of batteries and an electric motor. It's not a full hybrid--it's not able to cruise on electric power alone--but the eAssist setup does feed some of its net 15 hp to the drivetrain to smooth six-speed automatic shifts and to run some accessories, as well as to restart the engine after it's automatically stopped at longer pauses. With a net 182 horsepower, this base powertrain is quite smoothly integrated and perfectly adequate, though not all that enjoyable. Although eAssist helps smooth out shifts most of the time, the system still has moments of roughness and indecision.

For those who want an experience that's closer to that of a traditional luxury car or a traditional Buick, a 304-hp, 3.6-liter V-6 is available. Mileage dips significantly, but it's strong and smooth, with plenty of reserves for passing--which perhaps makes it the best choice for those who plan to carry a full load on highway trips. There's also an all-wheel-drive option, engineered by Haldex, that can shuffle some power to the rear wheels when the fronts lose traction.

Interiors and Special Features:

For 2014, Buick has enhanced the LaCrosse's warm and comfortable ambience. The seats, leather in all but the basic LaCrosse, are new. There's a new center control stack with an 8-inch color touch screen, four new color and trim combinations, and a new generation of Buick's IntelliLink telematics system. Materials have been upgraded, there's real wood trim, and most surfaces are soft-touch. And as befits an upscale sedan, the LaCrosse is stretch-out roomy and cathedral quiet.

Safety features:

Standard safety features for the LaCrosse include antilock disc brakes, stability and traction control, front and rear seat side-impact airbags and side curtain airbags. Also standard is OnStar, which includes automatic crash notification, on-demand roadside assistance, remote door unlocking, stolen vehicle assistance and turn-by-turn navigation. All Buick LaCrosses except the base version have rear park assist and a rearview camera standard.
