Full Review

The 2014 BMW 740Li xDrive belongs to one of the most prestigious luxury lineups available on the market – the 7-Series. Despite being based on a platform that’s more than five years old, this vehicle still offers plenty of upgrades to make it worth a look. The 740Li xDrive variant comes with a strong powertrain and enough optional features to make your head spin – which is always a good thing.

In terms of exterior design, this sixth-generation model is much sleeker and more sophisticated than its fifth-generation predecessor, especially when outfitted with the fantastic body and wheel modifications in the M-Sport package. You can also add optional LED headlights to complement that car’s contemporary sedan architecture. However, if you’re more practical-minded, you might prefer the standard xenon setup for its better light output.

On the inside, the 2014 740Li xDrive shows off exactly what BMW's in-vehicle technology and design are capable of. If you’re looking for extra comfort, for instance, you can adjust the optional "multicontour" front seats 20 ways to suit a variety of body shapes and sizes. In the meantime, back-seat passengers get a huge collection of luxurious features such as seat massagers, rear-seat entertainment with two 9.2-inch displays and power-sliding sunshades for the side windows. The infotainment system may not be the most user-friendly on the market, but this latest version of BMW's iDrive is still much, much better the first-generation version when it comes to intuitiveness.

Under the hood, 740Li xDrive has a 3.0-litre turbocharged inline six-cylinder engine that can generate 315 horsepower and 330 pound-feet of torque. It can accelerate from zero to 100 km/h in about six seconds. The fuel economy estimate for the 740Li xDrive is 12.8 litres per 100 kilometres combined, which is the same number for the 740i/Li versions.

Overall, the 2014 BMW 740Li xDrive is not exactly remarkable, but that’s not such a terrible thing. This sedan does what it does well, which means that its $99,800 price tag is well deserved. Should you get it? Our suggestion is to look at other luxury brands, such as Audi and Mercedes first, and then make up your mind – unless you’re already loyal to the BMW brand.

Power and Performance:

The 740 is powered by a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline six-cylinder engine that produces 315 horsepower and 330 pound-feet of torque. In Edmunds testing, an earlier 740i with slightly less power accelerated from zero to 60 mph in 5.8 seconds. EPA fuel economy estimates are 22 mpg combined (19 mpg city/29 mpg highway) for the 740i/Li and a virtually identical 22 mpg combined (19 city/28 highway) for the 740Li xDrive.

Interiors and Special Features:

As a flagship sedan, the 2014 7 Series is a rolling showcase for BMW's in-vehicle technology and design. The optional "multicontour" front seats adjust 20 ways to suit a variety of body shapes and sizes, while rear-seat passengers are provided an assortment of luxurious features such as seat massagers, rear-seat entertainment with two 9.2-inch displays, and power-sliding sunshades for the side windows. And while it may not be the most intuitive infotainment system on the market, the latest iteration of BMW's iDrive is light-years ahead of the 1st-generation system when it comes to ease of use.

Safety features:

The 7 Series comes with 4-wheel anti-lock disc brakes, active head restraints and eight airbags (front, front-knee, front-side and full-length side curtain).

A standout among the numerous standard and optional safety technologies is Attention Assistant, a Mercedes-inspired program that monitors your driving habits and notifies you with a cup-of-coffee icon when your attention wanders.

Neither the government nor the independent Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has crash-tested the 7 Series.
