Negotiate Smarter with the Best Car Buying Tools

In 2013, BMW introduced an all new 3-series, its one of their most important cars in their lineup as it’s the volume seller. They made an entry-level, affordable luxury sedan available for those who wanted the indulgence without hurting their wallets too much. The all-new 2014 BMW 320i is a wonderful car that’ll have you riding in style while keeping you and your wallet happy.

Just looking at the 2014 BMW 320i, you wouldn’t be able to tell that it is the least expensive BMW out of the 3-series family. It still has the characterized styling of BMW that really shine through in the design. You get the big mean front grilles, the round emblem, the shark-cut headlights, and several other features that give the 2014 320i a really sporty look. The good thing is, this car looks like a 3-series, and when you’re buying a 3-series you’re not solely focused on the drive, but also on the looks.

When buying the 2014 320i, you can really feel comfortable with your purchase because you know that BMW will give it a really strong heart to fuel the rest of the car. The 2014 320i comes standard with a 2-litre four-cylinder engine with a turbo charger. It’s a Twin Power Turbo charger which means it’s a twin-scroll variety that changes the veins of the turbo so that you get power throughout the rev-range. It makes 180-horesepower and 200 pound-feet of torque which makes for a super smooth and agile acceleration. The great thing about the 320i is that it comes with an 8-speed automatic transmission which carries the car beautifully and allows you to really get a feeling of the power of this machine.

What you might be thinking is what BMW cheaped-out on to bring the customers such a fair-priced luxury sedan. Once you get inside the 2014 BMW 320i you can see that the materials used aren’t as expensive as those used in the higher end models. However, it still looks like a BMW, the dash is beautifully laid out and you still get the same sporty feel but in a simplified layout.

The 2014 BMW 320i still provides a great LCD display with iDrive and navigation as an option. The gauges are clear and easy to see, styled just like the higher-end models in the BMW family. Keep in mind that the 2014 Mercedes-Benz CLA starts at a cheaper selling price and comes with more standard features. You won’t get the sporty handling of the BMW, but if you’re in it for the looks then keep in mind that the CLA is ready to go at the same price.

The drive in the 2014 BMW 320i is fun and sprightly. There’s a bit of a lull in the automatic transmission but it’s not something you can’t get used to. You get the BMW driving dynamics that you want, solid suspension, good breaks, and the handling is nice and light. It’s also very reasonable in its fuel economy ratings clocking in at 9.8L/100km city driving and 6.5L/100km on the highway, giving you a combined rating of 8.4L/100km. A very modest rating for a car in the luxury sedan class.

The 2014 BMW 320i is a wonderful luxury sedan to zip around in if you want the BMW driving experience without the hefty price tag. It’s definitely a fun toy for anyone who likes to cruise around on the open road.

Power and Performance:

The 2014 BMW 3-Series an all-turbocharged lineup (and it gets confusing as the model numbers no longer correspond to engine size). BMW 320i and 328i both come with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, while the 335i gets the latest N55 version of BMW’s 3.0-liter in-line six. In the 320i, the four makes 180 horsepower and 200 pound-feet of torque, while in the 328i it makes 240 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque. Step up to the turbo six in the 335i and you get 300 hp and 300 lb-ft.

Laggy turbocharged engines are a thing of the past. In all cases, these turbocharged engines have boost that comes on so quickly that you probably won’t guess that they’re turbos; if it weren't for the sound, the 328i's four, especially, feels like a larger-displacement six most of the time (peak torque happens at just 1,250 rpm).

Interiors and Special Features:

BMW calls its 2014 3 Series interior "straight out of the BMW design handbook," meaning an uncomplicated look with tight fits, simple shapes and upscale materials. The cockpit, angled toward the driver by seven degrees, presents important controls within easy reach. Overall, the cabin is quite spacious, and the rear quarters offer more legroom than the Mercedes-Benz C-Class, Cadillac ATS and Infiniti Q50. The console-mounted iDrive controller is handy to both driver and front passenger, and its freestanding central screen boasts an HDTV-like trans-reflective, high-resolution display.

Straight out of the box, base 320i trims come equipped with leatherette (vinyl) upholstery, manually adjustable front seats, rain-sensing wipers, dual-zone climate control, and a 9-speaker sound system with a 6.5-inch LCD display, a USB port, and HD Radio. For comparison, the less expensive Acura TSX and Audi A4 offer power front seats and leather as standard fare. Safety features standard on every 2014 BMW 3 Series model consist of eight airbags, active head rests to help reduce the severity of whiplash injuries, and impact sensors that unlock the doors, activate the hazard lights, and disengage potentially hazardous electrical systems in the event of a collision.

In typical BMW fashion, the options list for the 2014 3 Series is both extensive and pricey. Features we feel are worth their weight in gold include the above-mentioned Surround View camera, a hands-free power trunklid that opens by waving your foot under the bumper, navigation with programmable waypoints, a head-up display that projects pertinent driving information onto the windshield, and adaptive cruise control designed to maintain a preselected distance behind the vehicle ahead. The sport seats, aerodynamic enhancements, suspension tuning, and lightweight wheels of the available M Sport Package help bridge the performance gap between the standard 3 Series and the fire-breathing M3.

Safety features:

Every 2014 BMW 3 Series comes standard with antilock brakes, traction and stability control, front side airbags, side curtain airbags and front knee airbags.

The stability control system integrates several features designed to improve braking performance, such as periodically wiping the brake rotors dry when the windshield wipers are in use and automatically snugging the pads to the rotors when the driver abruptly lifts off the throttle. BMW Assist emergency communications is standard and includes automatic crash notification, stolen vehicle recovery and on-demand roadside assistance.

Options include parking sensors (front and rear), a rearview camera, blind spot monitoring, a lane departure warning system and an automated parking system.

In Edmunds brake testing, the 320i, on all-season tires no less, took just 111 feet in the same test, which is excellent.

In government crash testing, the sedan received five out of five stars for overall crash protection, plus four stars for frontal protection and five for side protection. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave the sedan the highest possible rating of "Good" in the moderate-overlap frontal-offset, side-impact and roof strength tests. It received the second-worst rating of "Marginal" in the Institute's small-overlap frontal-offset crash test. Its seat/head restraint designed was rated "Good" for whiplash protection in rear impacts.
